The best RB of all time is

Emmitt Smith

Smith was the first RB ever to run for over 1,000 yards in 11 consecutive seasons.
Holds the all time rushing and td record for a running back
Holds 58 school records at his alma mater, the University of Florida
He's the first player in NFL history with 5 straight seasons of 1,400 yards rushing
Emmitt also held the record for 9 years for the most rushing touchdowns in one season, 25
During his career, Emmitt has led the NFL in rushing 4 times, won 3 Super Bowl Titles, League MVP honors in 1993, the Super Bowl MVP Award (XXVIII), and has been selected to the Pro Bowl 8 times
Emmitt accumulated an outstanding 8,804 rushing yards and 106 touchdowns at Escambia High School in Pensacola, FL

In all Emmitt is the best running back of all time because of his numbers and how he made everyone around him even better

Based on your stats, we're looking at their life as a whole, being you stated high school and college statistics.

In that case, my choice is Barry Sanders.

Barry Sanders accomplishments and statistics are as follows:

Ten consecutive Pro Bowls [1989-1998]
Six 1st Team All-Pro appearances
Ten consecutive 1,000 rush seasons
One 2,000+ yard rush season
Two-time Offensive Player of the Year
1989 Offensive Rookie of the Year
1997 Co-NFL MVP
Sits in 10 Detroit Lions record columns

5th overall in rushing atttempts
3rd overall in rushing yards
9th overall in rushing touchdowns
2nd overall in rushing yards per game
5th longest rush

One of the best college football single seasons ever
1988 Heisman Trophy winner
Rushed for 2,628 yards
Had a total of 3,249 yards
Scored 39 touchdowns
Averaged 7.6 yards per carry
Four 300+ rush yard games
[These statistics were compiled during an 11-game regular season]

In his bowl game that year, he rushed for 222 yards and five touchdowns in three quarters only.

Barry Sanders is a great pick but still Smith is better.

Smith was a winner and a very good one at that,he won three super bowls and was one of the main reasons the Cowboys got there. He was a duel threat runner and held 58 Gator records, which is amazing considering how many good rushers they have had over the years. With one run smith could change the game another reason why he has the most rushing tds in NFL history.

The one thing against Sanders is that he never lead his team to a super bowl, its like saying Fran Tarkenton is the best qb ever,he may have had good numbers but in the NFL winning means everything and Smith was able to win three super bowls while Barry was never even in one.

Also Sanders is third in all time rushing yards and ninth in tds, sanders didnt even have 100 rushing tds while Smith had over 160.The numbers show hat Saunders wasent as good or decided to retire before his numbers started to drop.Another spot where Smith beats him is in reciving yards,Smith has about 1,000 more then Sanders and in his whole rushing carrer only fumbled 32 times, nine less then Barry.

Again Smith is the best running back of all time and is better then Barry Sanders

Smith was a winner because he was on a good team.

Not one year of his career did Sanders have a good team. He also had a terrible offensive line, so imagine what he could've done with a good offensive line.

Wait a minute.

Now you're comparing their stats?

Emmit Smith played in 15 seasons, while Barry Sanders played 10 seasons.

After 10 seasons, Sanders had 2,921 receiving yards.
After 10 seasons, Smith had 2,728 receiving yards.

After 10 seasons, Sanders had 15,269 rushing yards.
After 10 seasons, Smith had 13,963 rushing yards.

After 10 seasons, Sanders averaged 5.0 yards per attempt.
After 10 seasons, Smith averaged 4.3 yards per attempt.

Those are just a few examples.

Something else you're failing to understand.

Smith had three good years in college. Sanders didn't even get to start until his senior year.

He played limited time in his junior season and rushed for over 600 yards.

Smith's best college year encompassed 1,599 rushing yards.

Sanders best college year encompassed 2,628 rushing yards.

Imagine if Sanders was able to play three full seasons as Smith was able to.

Well, I guess I don't really have anything to add, and since you forfeited your turn I don't have anything to rebut against.

Good luck in the voting.

Emitte Smith is my pick unless the other guy can prove me otherwise.

Emmit Smith? I dont think so Barry Sanders, Walter Payton, and Jim Brown are all ahead of him

May 24, 2008  11:51 AM ET

Barry Sanders would have broken every NFL record by plenty if he played as many seasons as Emmit. I know we don't know that and that is a coulda statement but Barry just made defenfers look stupid he goes one way they go in the opposite direction, He practically invented breaking ankles.

Smith owns the record and was a great back. He also had a long career and a great line. Sanders quit with at least 5 years that he could have played and he played on one of the weakest lines in football. Sanders was in a class by himself and would have shattered the record if he had not lost the passion to play at 29. I saw both play and both were amazing but Sanders was the better back.

1. Sanders
2. Payton
3. Brown
4. Smith
5. Gale S.

You know i have argued this TD a couple of times and i do infat think Sanders is the greatest But t is Just so Hard to compare.

There are so many good things it is just so hard to compare.

But i will Bet you one thing if Sanders an behind Emmits Line or Played In Bowns Era with Browns Team he would be so far ahead of everyone Not even LT could Touch Him.

I do Infact think when it is all said and done LT will be the greatest back of all time iits just goanna take a few more seasons for LT to solidify his Legaccy among Barry Sanders Jim brown walter Payton and Emmit Smith

any arguments that begins with the words emmitt smith and best are horrible arguments to begin with because there is no dispute.

May 24, 2008  01:46 PM ET

Barry was better but Emmitt is underrated. Sanders might not have stayed healthy if he had to carry the load like Emmitt did. Smith also was one of the best big game running backs ever.

May 24, 2008  01:59 PM ET

Emmit smith is very Underrated the guy is the best workhorse back the NFL has ever seen the Guy would just keep going and going which made Him great

Emmitt barely makes the top 5.... But he will drop out after LT and Adrian Peterson finish their careers.
