Career stats:

-35,467 yards

-237 touchdowns

-84.4 passer rating???Led NFL with 101.2 rating, 1990

-Passed for more than 3,000 yards in season eight times

-Mastered Bills' "no huddle" offense

-Guided Buffalo to eight post-season appearances

-Led team to an unprecedented four straight Super Bowls (only team to go 4 years straight)

-Named to five Pro Bowls???

Ok.....

Billy Shaw.....

WHO??

Shaw was drafted by the Cowboys of the NFL and the Bills of the AFL and opted for the Bills. While in a Bills uniform for 9 seasons, he accomplished

9 straight Pro Bowls
8 All Pros
4 ALL AFL selections
Member of the ALL TIME AFL TEAM

The Bills are the only team to win back to back AFL championships and Shaw was a drving force on the OL. Thats something that Jim and company could not do in 4 apperances to the SB

Here's the ace up my sleve........Billy Shaw is the only player ever inducted to the Pro Football Hall of Fame without ever playing in the NFL. He spent all 9 years of his career in the AFL, yet he was good enough to be worthy of NFL HOF Honors

Former Bills Oline Coach Jerry Smith said that Shaw, " was the driving force of the offensive unit". The Bills of 1962, 1963, and 1964 still rank among the best in the team record book for most rushing touchdowns scored in a season with a total of 59 Rushing TD's over that span. Might not seem like alot now with LT and Alexander breaking records, but almost 20 rushing TD's per season is better than ANY RB can average

Good luck!

Nice...Nice... But you can't say the best bills player of all-time was a lineman. I understand that a good running game starts at the line, but Billy Shaw wasn't a leader. Jim Kelly put this team back on the map. He was the face of the franchise.

Kelly didn't get the credit that he deserved outside of Buffalo because he did not win a super bowl. In addition, Kelly was playing in an era with many other great quarterbacks, such as Joe Montana, John Elway, and Dan Marino. Their career numbers make them stand out as some of the games greatest ever.
If Kelly came directly to the NFL after college, instead of going to the USFL, and had he not retired earlier than he had to, his career statistics would probably be on par with those of the other greats of his era.
(Kelly, in two seasons with the Houston Gamblers, threw for 9,842 yards and 83 touchdowns.)

At the time of Kelly's retirement, only Fran Tarkenton, Dan Fouts, and Johnny Unitas among Hall of Fame quarterbacks had passed for more yardage, and only Tarkenton, and Fouts had completed more passes.

PLUS-The only retired number in the Buffalo Bills franchise is #12 (Yea our boy Jimbo)

Beside's Lifer...Im the last guy on the Planet you need to try to convince anything about Jim Kelly. Jim was so underated it wasnt funny. At least the HOF committee seen what kind of skills he really had... The only reason he didnt make MORE Pro-bowls, is only 3 QB's can make it to the PB from each conference...So with the likes of Marino and Elway in the AFC, there is only 1 spot open for Kelly, Esiason, Kosar, and others from the Era..

The Difference between Kelly and Shaw in thier respective time periods is that Shaw was the BEST OG of his time. Kelly was maybe the 3rd or 4th best QB of his time behind Montana, Elway and Marino...

Kelly also had the luxury of being around multiple HOFer's and FUTURE Hofers...Thurman, Lofton, Reed, Levy, Smith, Tasker and so on. The only HOF that Shaw lined up with is, well...NO ONE. There is not 1 HOFER from the Bills that played when Shaw was playing. However, those Bills won 2 AFL Titles.

So here you have a team that won back to back AFL titles, and the ONLY HOFer from those teams is a Offensive Lineman. That my Billieving friend is worth reading again. Go ahead, take your time and read that line again....I'll wait

*Goodell waits*

-You are telling me that Biily Shaw was the reason the Bills won back to back AFL titles? I understand he played a HUGE part but an offensive lineman isn't going to win back to back AFL alone.
-In the AFL, a predominantly offensive league, the Buffalo Bills were a great defensive team. With a linebacking corps of Harry Jacobs, Mike Stratton, and John Tracey; and defensive line stalwarts like Tom Day, Tom Sestak, Jim Dunaway, and Ron McDole (all AFL Hall of Famers), the Bills defense DID NOT ALLOW a rushing touchdown for 17 straight games over a period of the 1964 and 1965 seasons. Their pass defense was just as good as their run defense, registering 50 quarterback sacks in 1964, STILL A TEAM RECORD, although it was established in a 14-game season. The Bills won AFL championships in both of those seasons.
-The Bills had muscle as well, in stars such as RB's Cookie Gilchrist and Wray Carlton, QB's Jack Kemp and Daryle Lamonica, and WR's Elbert Dubenion and Ernie Warlick. All AFL HOFers. I understand Shaw is the only in the NFL HOF, but he didn't lead them to back to back AFL titles.
-Jim Kelly LED the Bills to 4 straight SB's and has the only retired number with the franchise.

The 64 AFL team that won the title was acutally ranked #1 in BOTH offense and Defense. The thing is that Shaw is the only person from that offense to be in the HOF...

As great as the Bills D was with the sacks and not allowing TD's, thier offense was ranked #1 also, WITH NO HOFER's except Shaw. The fact that you throw out all those stagering stats for the Bills D, only BOOSTS the credibitly of Shaw. With all sacks, and the very few Rushing TD's given up on D, the HOF committee only saw fit to elect Shaw. Shaw was the one who stood out MORE than any other guy on the Bills roster.....

More than Sestak and Jacobs...

More than Jack Kemp and Cookie Gilchrist...

Acutally, you can even go as far as to call Billy Shaw one the best AFL players of all time...Considering NO AFL player ever made 9 straight PB's with HOF honors. Every other player in the HOF has played in the NFL

"The Bills had muscle as well, in stars such as RB's Cookie Gilchrist and Wray Carlton, QB's Jack Kemp and Daryle Lamonica, and WR's Elbert Dubenion and Ernie Warlick. All AFL HOFers"

But not ONE NFL HOFer besides Shaw......Interesting, isnt it?

Well, if we're talkin' football & not murdering, robbing sports collectors, & assorted character aberrations, Orenthal James Simpson has to be considered.

June 10, 2008  05:12 PM ET

How come no one mentioned Bruce Smith?? He is the NFL's all time sack leader and NO ONE who is active is even close to him....

June 10, 2008  05:27 PM ET

No one's going to touch Smith's records. It's too hard to be that good for that long these days plus Tackles are super awesome now.
