Hank Aaron
In 1959 he was a top 5 in every catgory except stolen bases. He had a slugging percentage of .636, and he had the best average with .355. He was fifth in home runs with 39. Now that is pretty good.
He did excellent all of the other four seasons, making top five in a bucnh of categories each year. I will get other years next, this is to just start it out.

Willie Mays
I don't think it should be Hank Aaron. He hit under .300 once, had less than 100 runs batted in twice, stole less than 10 bases five times and had less than 30 home runs twice in this six-year span. That would be pretty good, but the best hitter of the late 50's should have better stats than that.
Mays had great stats. He had two straight 30-30 seasons and just missed a third when he came one home run shy of 30. Mays hit under .300 once and had 214 home runs from 1995-1960 including a 51 home run year in '55. 214 home runs in six years equals about 35 home runs a year. Mays also had two seasons with a slugging percentage of .655 at least.
Aaron averaged about 33 home runs and had 206 home runs during these six years. Good, but still less. Aaron had one season with an OBP of .400 or more compared to Mays' three. Aaron also never had a slugging percentage over .650.
The stats don't lie.
Mays and Aaron both played in the NL so neither person had an advantage.
Bucmaster: Rocktober said 06/19, 06:41 PM
Maybe Aaron did not have the best stats.
But the thing that I find interesting is Hank Aaron's consistency. He always finished in the top 5 in atleast one category each year.
I thought about Willie Mays while I was looking at the stats for these years. He actually put up some excellent numbers. But like I said, I was worried about his consistency. He was good, but not consistent.
Over the entire sppan of those years, Willie Mays was better than Hank Aaron in the batting average, but Hank Aaron dominated between them in doubles, runs, triples, hits, RBI, and home runs.
As you can see, Hank Aaron pretty much donimated over that time span. Willie Mays only beat Hank Aaron in stolen bases, and the slugging percentage, over that entire time span.
Dawgee is gone said 06/20, 12:28 PM
I don't see how Mays is inconsistent. If anybody was inconsistent, it was Hank Aaron. Here is Mays' worst statistical year from 1955-1960:
.296 avg., 36 HR, 84 RBI, 40 SB, .557 SLG
This was in less than 580 at-bats. This was Mays' only year of hitting under .300.
Besides, why does it matter who was inconsistent over the years, Aaron probably had lower points than Mays. This TD is from 1955-1960 and Mays had betetr overall stats for that time. Isn't that what the TD is about?
Aaron had more hits because he had at least 600 at-bats for five of the six years. Mays had LESS than 600 at-bats for five of the six years.
Aaron didn't dominate in runs. Both Mays and Aaron had six straight years of 100 or more runs and the total result is about even.
Aaron dominated in triples? That is a ridiculous statement. Over the six year span, Mays had 18 more tiriples than Aaron.
Mays had less at-bats but he still had more home runs, OBP, avg., and triples.
You said Aaron dominated in triples, home runs and runs. All of these statements are false.
Bucmaster: Rocktober said 06/20, 01:31 PM
Where are you getting your stats? Through all those six years, Hank Aaron had more triples, HR, and runs.
"This TD is from 1955-1960 and Mays had betetr overall stats for that time. Isn't that what the TD is about?"
Yes, it is, and that is what I am talking about. Over the time span, from 1955-1960, in total numbers, Hank Aaron dominated in those categories listed above.
"Mays hit under .300 once and had 214 home runs from 1995-1960 including a 51 home run year in '55."
Aaron had 1178 hits in that entire time span. He had 206 home runs. He had 674 RBI. He had 198 doubles. He had 51 triples. Those are the stats from MLB.com. According to them, Willie Mays had less HR than Hank Aaron.

I was getting my stats from baseballreference.com and Mays had more triples and home runs. I see you are using MLB.com so I went there as well and this is what it shows:
Fannation, who has the better stats?
Mays:
.321 Avg.
.393 OBP
214 HR
611 RBI
427 BB
185 SB
.593 SLG
176 2B
69 3B
689 R
Aaron:
.323 Avg.
.375 OBP
206 HR
674 RBI
313 BB
34 SB
.574 SLG.
198 2B
51 3B
656 R
I looked on both of the following websites:
baseballreference.com
mlb.com
and they both showed me that Mays had more runs, home runs and triples.
Mays............................Aaron
689 runs................656 runs
214 HR...................206 HR
69 3B..........................51 3B
Interesting . . .
The Bottom Line, average stats for each player through the years:
Mays: .321 avg, .393 OBP, 36 HR, 102 RBI, 71 BB, 31 SB, .593 SLG, 29 2B, 12 3B, 114 R
Aaron: .323 avg, .375 OBP, 34 HR, 112 RBI, 52 BB, 6 SB, .574 SLG, 33 2B, 9 3B, 109 R
There are the final stats and they show that Mays is better. The only thing that Aaron beats mays in is Avg., RBI and 2B. Mays beats Aaron in all of the rest.
The stats don't lie, Mays was better.

Hank Aaron had his best years in the 60's. It wasn't until then when he started smashing home runs all the time

I can't believe neither of you mentioned Mickey Mantle. He was the best hitter by a mile.

Yeah, Mantle was king of New York. The exclusion of Stan Musial and Ted Williams also leaves a lot to be desired!!!

Mickey Mantle or Ernie Banks (preferably Mantle). Both were 2x MVPs during that time period, and both of them were finalists every year.

Agreed. I actually view A-Rod in a similar light. Rodriguez is a great hitter but he's ranked only sixth among active players in adjusted OPS and ia mere 40th all-time in OPS+.

How about the intangibles, stats don't always tell the whole story. They were both great players, this is a hard one.

The stats don't favor either player to a huge degree.
However, Dawgee's assertions from the statistics are more accurate - and he lays his arguments out more clearly.
Therefore, I vote right.

Very close but vote to Dawgee.
Buc - becareful with MLB.com for stats - sometimes they are off (sometimes way off).....it drops ABs for some reason...when I did one it was 100 HRs off for mays and mantle during the same time period.
