I'm going with the 1967 Green Bay Packers

Well Nowak.....

1977 Atlanta Falcons.....In a 14 game season....

ONLY 9 PASS TD's Allowed
26 INTS
1384 passing yards allowed

1967 Packers

Allowed 13 pass TD's
26 INTS
1377 yards allowed

Here's the deal....Even though they have the same amount of INT's and the Falcons gave up 7 more passing yards, the Falcons are the better D. Only 1 person from the Falcons D made the Probowl...The Falcons gave up 4 less TD's than the Packers did

The packers of the 60's were the dominant team... No question. The Falcons of 77 had to play the dominant teams, cause they were not one.

The 1977 Falcons (also known as the stingiest single defense in super bowl history) is a great pick. But the '67 Packers were the BEST. You even agreed they were the most dominant. I understand the '77 Falcons didn't have as great of players, but that's not the case.

The '67 Packers held teams to an unbelievable 4.878 YPA with 337 Pass Attempts! Which is better than any NFL defense during the Super Bowl Era. The '77 Falcons allowed 5.547 YPA with 320 Pass Attempts. The Packers had more attempts than the Falcons and still held teams to better numbers.

Bottom Line......when you review the stats, the '67 Packers were the BEST PASS DEFENSE in Super Bowl History.

". But the '67 Packers were the BEST. You even agreed they were the most dominant. "

No, thats not what I said....What I said was, "The packers of the 60's were the dominant team... No question. "

The were the DOMINANT TEAM OF THE DECADE.....Just like the Steelers of the 70's, 49ers of the 80's, Cowboys of the 90's. The Packers of the 60's were the team to beat. Meaning they didnt have to play the best teams in the NFL cause they were the best team in the NFL.

On the other hand...The Falcons TEAM was down right horrible. They had the 25th ranked offense which back in 77, there was only 28 teams in the NFL. For the Falcons to go 7-7 with the 4th worst offense in the NFL was simply amazing. Especially with real jugernauts in the 70's like Pitt, The Orange Crush, The Purple People Eaters and so on. They posted better numbers than all the historic teams ever......

....Except the '67 Packers.

When we are talking PASS defense, the '67 Packers put up the best numbers. You keep mentioning how bad the '77 Falcons team was, that is irrelevant! The '67 Packers still had more passes thrown on them than the '77 Falcons and still put up better numbers against the pass. That says it all right there.

The 1967 Green Bay Packers is the BEST PASS DEFENSE in the Super Bowl Era. Period. Not just the decade...but in a single season.

I think your missing my point......

The Packers were the best team in the 60's....So, the Packers D never had to play the best offense, cause they had them on the same team. Not so with the Falcons....

The Packers D gave up TWO 200+ yard passing games to opposing QB's...........The Falcons D gave up ONE 200+ yard passing game to opposing QB's

The fewest pass yards allowed by the Packers was 19 yards.......The Fewest pass yards allowed by the Falcons was 16 yards

The most Turnovers the Pack forced in a game is 5.....The most Turnovers the Falcons forced in a game is 7

Just because the Packers allowed 7 fewer yards over the course of the season doesnt mean anything. The Packers allowed 4 MORE TD's than the Falcons....I havent heard you explain that one yet

And shepherds we shall be,
For Thee, my Lord, for Thee.
Power hath descended forth from Thy hand,
That our feet may swiftly carry out Thy command.
So we shall flow a river forth to Thee
And teeming with souls shall it ever be.

........wow Nowak you really think all those teams had a better D then th e77 falcons, thats funny.

June 24, 2008  05:35 PM ET

I think what Goodell is saying is that the Falcons defense was on the field more because their offense sucked some off, therefore only giving up .64yds more per attempt is better. I think.

June 24, 2008  05:43 PM ET

Thanks Robert.....Thats what I was aiming towards. Maybe you should be my interpreter

June 24, 2008  05:49 PM ET

I'll do it. What's the pay?

June 24, 2008  05:56 PM ET

Well, I waited to hear out all arguments, but I'll give a team 7 more yards if I can keep the 4 TD's. And since the only way I can do that is with the Falcons, I gotta go right. Good arguments from Nowak though. It was close.
