The Mitt Tourny: Most Impressive Player This Year in the NL

I am going to have to go with Lance Berkman on this one. He has been an animal at the plate and is a serious contender for the triple crown award. So far he is batting .360 with 21 homeruns and 62 RBI.

He is 1 of only 3 players so far this season to have 100 hits. The other 2 being Chipper Jones (100) and Christian Guzman (106). Not bad for a powe hitting 1st basemen.

Berkman is also atop the NL in a number of statistical categories.
His 68 runs ranks 1st, as well as his 26 doubles, 195 total bases and his .701 slugging %.

He ranks 2nd only to Chipper Jones in batting average with a .360 and is 2nd to Guzman in hits this year.

Berkman is also 3rd in homeruns with 21 and 4th in RBI with 62.

Also for a 220 pound man he has been pretty good on his feet. He has 12 stolen bases thus far this season while getting caught only twice and he also has 3 triples.

I could go with Christian Guzman, Chase Utley, or Chipper Jones, but I'm going to go with a pitcher from the National League. He was traded from the Rangers for Josh Hamilton. He pitches in the NL Central, and is from the Cincinnati Reds. He has pitched extremely well this year, and should start for the NL in the all-star game. His name is Edison Volquez.

Edison Volquez's stats this season are as following:

10-2
1.71 ERA
110 strikeouts
1.17 WHIP
.196 BAA

He is having a great year this year. He is first in the MLB in ERA, tied for 3rd in the MLB with 10 wins, and tied for 2nd in the NL in wins. He leads the MLB in strikeouts.

He might have 45 walks, but he doesn't let those extra runners score, as you can see by his league-leading ERA.

He has only allowed 66 hits, with only 23 runs scored.

He is amazing this year. He doesn't even play on that good of a team, as the Reds are in last place. That is amazing.

Berkman might be playing on a bad team, but since he is hitting and plays everyday, he should be helping out.

Edison Volquez plays every 5 days, so that means that he doesn't have the opportunity to help his team much.

The argument about helping the team I am going to have to disregard due to the fact that the Astros have virtually no pitching. The only starter with an ERA under 4.00 is Wandy Rodriquez in 9 starts. The rest of the staff is allowing 4 runs a game and on average Berkman has 3.66 at bats a game. Berkman can not make up for 4-5 runs when he only gets about 4 chances to swing the bat each night.

Also Berkman is the Astros offense. Berkman is responsible for at least 15% of the entire teams hits, doubles, RBI, total bases, walks, steals, and sac flys. He is 20% of their runs scored, 33% of their triples, 26% of their homeruns, 21% of their XBH and 47% of their IBB.

Volquez was my 2nd choice for this TD because he too is a triple crown contender like Berkman is, except in pitching not hitting. But I went with Berkman due to schedule difficulty. 8 of the 16 games Volquez pitched in were against teams below .500 while Berkman has played 52 of his 73 games against teams over .500 (15 against 1st place teams, 18 against 2nd place teams)

7 of Berkmans 17 below .500 games were against top pitching in Peavy (2), Chris Young, Maddux, Cook, Lincecum and Billingsly.

Volquez doesn't play every night like Berkman does. That is why Berkman has played in more games against tougher opponents. He has played against the Brewers, Cubs, and Cardinals, and played in each game of the series. When the Reds play the Cubs, Cardinals, or Brewers, Volquez might not be able to even pitch in that series.

"The argument about helping the team I am going to have to disregard due to the fact that the Astros have virtually no pitching."

You didn't disregard it because you based about half of your argument about the subject.

Edison Volquez is the Reds pitching. He is just completely tearing his opponents apart.

Volquez is a triple crown winner in pitching, which is hard to do. That is impressive.

The schedule difficutly doesn't do much for this TD. Yes Berkman might have faced some tough talent, but remember, he plays EVERY DAY. Volquez plays every 5 days.

Berkman faces maybe 2 or 3 different pitchers in a game, while Volquez faces 10 to 11 different hitters a game. There is diffinitely more scouting that has to take place, and that makes Volquez's play the most impressive so far this year, in the National League.

1st off since Volquez is a young pitcher in his 1st full season and with catchers in their 11th and 12th seasons, for the most part the catcher is making the calls.

2nd I think the fact that Berkman does play everyday with no rest and still continues to play well is what makes him that much more impressive. Volquez has 4-5 days of rest between each start so he is fresh everytime he steps onto the field unlike Berkman whos only rest is on a plane or bus to the next town.

Lets look at Berkman's past seasons. Berkman has never had 200 hits, hit over .300 only 3 times in his 10 year career, most RBI is 126, most runs is 110. Berkman already is more than half way to each of these career highs with 2 weeks left until the All Star break. So Berkman is on pace to have career highs in hits, RBI, runs, batting average and can match career highs in homeruns (45). He already has a career high 12 steals which to me is very impresive for a man his size.

Volquez also faltered tonite allowing 7 runs, 5 earned in 4.1 innings tonite. In his past 4 starts he has shown his true colors allowing 15 runs, 12 earned, 10 walks and 19 ks in 24.1 innings. He also has never gone more than 7 inning.

With Volquez being in his 1st full season, that makes this feat just so much more impressive.

The catchers might be making the calls, but Volquez still has to locate his pitches and execute the pitches and location that was called.

When you pitch, you use your arm and you also use your legs. You arm has a lot of torque on it, and it gets tiring. Volquez averages 102.8 pitches per start, which is a lot of pitches everytime you go out. That just makes this impressive that he can pitch that many pitches a game, at his age, and still be able to do well in the league.

Edison Volquez is coming out right away, and in his first full season in the majors, he is pitching amazing. Berkman has had years of experience in the majors. He is in his prime now, so he should do well.

Edison Volquez, being in his first season, doesn't know what to expect and is now dominanting players.

Volquez hasn't allowed more than 3 ER in a game (the game against the Blue Jays isn't taken into effect), and that is beyond impressive.

Russell Martin is big, but he can steal bases, so 12 steals isn't that impressive to me.

He has beenthe most impressive pleyer in the NL this year.

good luck dyhard

Good luck, to you as well, nedenhunter.

good luck guys....hope to face one of you later on in the tourney if I advance

No mention of Albert Pujols. 191 OPS+. He has over twice as many walks then strikeouts and his team which had few believers at the start of the season are the current leader of the NL Wild Card race. I think he has to be a favorite for the NL MVP right now.

Report Offensive Comment

most impresiive but not best...eh? Volquez really impresses me.

Report Offensive Comment

i have to vote against nedenhunter just because icp blows

Report Offensive Comment

Good choices by both, but Volquez's pitching dominance is greater than berkman's offensive dominance at the moment.

Report Offensive Comment

better arguments and a better choice on the right.

What he is doing as a rookie pitcher is more impressive than a veteran finally living up to his talent.

Report Offensive Comment

i like the arguments form both sides, however, i wont say which way im voting, because as a fellow member of the same tourney, i will abstain from voting to avoid any controversy later on in the tourney

Volquez is not a rookie, he has been in the MLB for 4 seasons now but has never lasted a full season until this year. He was awful in the AL with a 3-11 record and 7.19 ERA in 17 starts and has continued to struggle against the AL this year in interleague play. In 4 starts against the AL this season he is 2-1 with a 4.01 ERA. Impressive would be a pitcher that can not just be dominant against the overall weaker lineups of the NL but also be dominant against the deep lineups of the AL.

i would go with chipper jones
im sure that no one would have predicted that he would be flirting around a .400 average at the all star break.
