I say that this is his BEST Tournament win ever. He even said said it when they were interviewing him.

Tiger Woods was playing Rocco Mediate in a 19-hole playoff on Monday. He had to play over 4 rounds of golf, and he had a horrible knee. He also had to swing, and the way he swings, he puts a lot of pressure on his knees, and it was very tough for him, especially with all the knee pain he was experiencing.

He had to walk over 500 miles on this course, and he had to walk over 1000 yards. This is an insane amount to walk in a 4 day period, especially having a really bad knee.

He was wincing in pain AT LEAST 5 times, if not more that was noticable. He also went down once or twice.

He was down by a lot, he came back and was close to Rocco Mediate. On the final official day he was keeping up with Rocco Mediate. He had to make shots that are hard to make, and he had to do that on a bad knee.

The one thing that was even more impressive was that he had to play an 18 hole playoff that turned into a 19 hole playoff.

That means that he had to play MORE golf than anyone else (except Rocco Mediate) on a bad knee that was huting a lot.

This was his best Tourney win!

What defines best? Was this, perhaps, his most GUTSY win? Certainly...

However, this is by no means his BEST or GREATEST victory in a major... that distinction rides with his first major victory, as a fresh-faced kid on the PGA Tour at the 1997 Masters...

Tiger shot sub-par every round -- going 70-66-65-69 and dominating the field. Woods ended up winning this major by a record TWELVE strokes. This was mastery on a level which had never been seen before on a golf course, the moment when young Eldrick became the Tiger of the sport of golf...

Don't get me wrong, this win over Rocco Mediate was inspiring... the fact that Woods was willing to risk his career for one more major was both gutsy, thrilling and foolhardy all at the same time. However, the sheer amount of holes and strokes it took Tiger to ultimately prevail are of little importance. The fact that the face of the sport over the last decade had to play 91 holes of golf to come out ahead is far less impressive or dominant than winning with a score of EIGHTEEN strokes under par...

I've said it once, and I'll say it again... the 1997 Masters was both Tiger's first and his greatest major golf tournament victory...

This is his BEST victory in a major. Do you understand that this is the LONGEST course in the PGA Tour, and he had to play this with a HORRIBLE knee that left him wincing in pain.

He had to walk a LOT and he didn't get many, if not any rides during his time playing there.

How would his best victory be when he had no competition and just completely drove everyone away from the championship? That just isn't a good victory.

His BEST victory is when he is injured, he has to play extra holes, he has competition, his knee is killing him, and he actually does well.

It was inspiring, and it was his BEST victory too.

He had to play 91 holes of golf on a bad knee. Plus, what makes it even harder, is that Tiger Wood's swing put a LOT of torque on his knee, which just makes it that more painful for him. That means that he had to endure 19 more holes of pain, that what was scheduled.

Just because it was his first golf tournament victory, doesn't mean it was his greatest.

He had no competition, and that kinda degrades the greatest of it.

In this recent tournament, he had competition from Mediate.

This was his BEST tournament victory ever/

"He had no competition, and that kinda degrades the greatest of it."

Woods came into the 2008 U.S. Open the established and undisputed king of golf. Yes, he was injured, but there was no doubt in anyone's mind by this time that even an injured Woods is better than most healthy golfers playing the best games of their life. In 1997, on the other hand, Tiger was just "That little boy is driving well and he's putting well." Tiger had won Amateur championships, sure... but this was the freakin' MASTERS.

He came into the 1997 tournament @ Augusta having come off a rookie season where he won two Tour events and had ranked TWENTY-FOURTH on the money list. Woods was not yet expected to dominate in such a fashion... and the fact that he set the four-round course record @ Augusta National in winning the 1997 Masters only punctuated this coming-of-age party further.

At the beginning of the tournament, Woods was not expected to be competition for guys like Tom Kite & Tom Watson & Fred Couples... whereas now we seek a consistent foe for Woods. You say that Tiger had no competition in 1997? Who, pray tell, is his Kryptonite THESE days? Mediate is a journeyman who got lucky -- no more, no less.

He was the Kirk Gibson of golf, only it took less talent.

"He had to walk over 500 miles on this course"

I wish I could walk 500 miles in 4 days =/

June 28, 2008  11:43 PM ET

It isn't his best win. It's top three, but I have two I would put in front of it. I'll let the opponent respond before I give them.

"He had to walk over 500 miles on this course, and he had to walk over 1000 yards. This is an insane amount to walk in a 4 day period, especially having a really bad knee."

Those numbers don't really seem to jive...

No way did he walk 500 miles. Maybe 50. I sure hope it was a typo.

So, that was a typo.

Mediate is overhyped all the sudden. His best showdown wins are over guys who have actually won majors.

June 29, 2008  02:43 AM ET

VOTE RIGHT

June 29, 2008  03:01 AM ET

Mediate isn't overhyped FAVREistheman. He's just getting props for hanging with the #1 golfer in the world at age 45 with no major win prior to this event and his last tour win dating back to 2006.

June 29, 2008  03:10 AM ET

Hubby just reminded me I shouldn't quote golf stats. Mediate last won in 2002. But still...

June 29, 2008  03:14 AM ET

The '97 Masters and '08 US Open were both very impressive but his greatest performance came in the '00 US Open.

June 29, 2008  03:17 AM ET

I meant overhyped as being called TRUE competition for tiger.
He barely cracks the top 50 in ranking but now many people say hes up there with the best.
no

June 29, 2008  03:20 AM ET

I see - thanks for clarifying.

As for the TD, I'm waiting till the end to vote. This should be an interesting throwdown.

June 29, 2008  04:29 AM ET

Not a chance was it his best win ever. Not even close. What he said, he said in the moment, right after the tourney ended. Upon reflection he will change his mind. '97 Masters. Period. He won a freakin' major by TWELVE strokes. Beating journeyman Mediate in a playoff doesn't even come CLOSE no matter how much pain he might have been in. MAYBE if it had been Mickelson it would come close, but let's face it, he beat a 45 year old has been/never was. Probably not in the top 5 of his greatest golf accomplishments.

June 29, 2008  04:30 AM ET

This one was Tiger against himself, that's why everyone is making a big deal about it. Mediate was just the nice side story.

June 29, 2008  04:47 AM ET

"Hubby just reminded me I shouldn't quote golf stats. Mediate last won in 2002. But still..."

Mediate was a great STORY. He didn't qualify for the Open, he had to play his way in just like you or I would. (Yes, you or I could attempt to get into a US open or any other open championship.)

June 29, 2008  05:17 AM ET

Why is Tiger's '97 Masters his most impressive win when it wasn't even his largest margin of victory in a major? He won the 2000 US Open by 15 strokes.

June 29, 2008  05:22 AM ET

Yeah, I know about the 2k US open, but that's NOT the Masters. Let's face it, the Masters is THE it tourney on the PGA tour. The 2k open is his second most impressive win.

June 29, 2008  08:55 AM ET

At what point did the Masters become the most important major CCC? Did I miss that memo? Anyway, my two favorite Tiger wins:

1997 Masters, where he exploded on the tour.
2006 British Open at Hoylake, his first win after his father died. He hit driver exactly once and kept putting his three and four irons inside other players' seveen and eight irons, matching the record for score in relation to par. It's what proved to me he had the best discipline and all around game in golf.

June 29, 2008  06:46 PM ET

2006 British definitely if you like the feel good story of him winning it for Pops. But his best by far was the 200 US Open. No one even got close to him and he was on a whole different level that weekend.
