FGCFF tourniment round 2... Who was the Greatest college football player ever (list first)

Doak Walker, Southern Methodist, RB, 1948

I really hate listing first, but I will for a tournament.

Jim Thorpe, Carlisle, RB, DB, PK, P, early 1900's.

Sorry I took so long, I had spent the day at the lake today, but to answer too Nick's comment below, Your given a 24 hour time limit.

Walker attended SMU (who wasn't a laughing stock of college football back in his day) where he played running back, defensive back, and place kicker. He also threw and caught passes, punted, and returned kicks. He was an All-American and in 1946, 1947, and 1948 and won the Heisman Trophy in 1948.
He also Lettered on SMU's Basketball and baseball team....

In other words he was a great all-around player much like Jim Thrope...

I couldn't find Thropes exact stats, so I can't compare the two through stats...

The only thing about Thorpe is that he played in a time in which the athletes weren't near what they are now, which leaves me sceptical(tell me if I spelled this wrong) of how great of an athlete he really was, one of his best events in track was high jumps in which his best jump was only 5-10, which I have matched myself several times and I'm only a sophomore in high school...

Jim Thorpe was an all-around athelete just like Walker as Thorpe played MLB, NFL, and Track and Field.

Jim Thorpe played running back, defensive back, placekicker, and punter for his college (Carlisle Indian).

Jim Thorpe, in a game against Harvard, scored ALL his teams points in a 18-15 win. Now that is an athelete!

In 1911, he led Carlislie to a 11-1 record.

In 1912, he led Carlislie to the NCAA Championship. He had an amazing 25 TDs with 198 points.

In a 27-6 win against Army, he had a 92-yard TD called back by a penalty, and then on the very next play, ran 97 yards for a TD.

Thorpe was given All-American honors in 1911 and 1912.

Dwight Eisenhower injured his knee in trying to tackle Thorpe, and Eisenhower even said, "He never practiced in his life, and he could do anything better than any other football player I ever saw."

Now that is impressive.

Thorpe also played professional baseball, basketball, and even football!

Why did you bring up track events? Does that matter?

What is even more impressive is that Thorpe is a Native American and had to fight racism too. Walker didn't have to do that.

Thorpe = greatest college football player!

The reason I bring up a track event is because he did one of the same events as I do and me, a sophomore in high school I can vertical jump higher than someone who you claim to be the best athlete in NCAA history. So if a Sophomore in high school can beat him in one of his best events, how good of an athlete is he really?

This makes me question the quality of competion he played against and wonder if he would even be starting if he played in today's game,

and I'm just curious, but where did you find his stats, because I couldn't find either of there college stats anywhere,

Also, he played in an era where most football players ran 40's in the 4.9's so I think that if you would of put a guy like Reggie Bush in his era, we would be talking about Reggie Bush as the best College football player of all-time.

Doak played in a era with better athletes and is unlike thrope has the RB of the year award named after him, Thrope is one of the most overrated athletes of all-time, if he would of played against today's competition he wouldn't of been half as good.

We aren't talking about the greatest athelete in NCAA history, we are talking about the great college football player. Not athelete, but COLLEGE FOOTBALL.

Of course the competition wasn't as good back then because people didn't lift, and didn't work out as much as they do now. If he played now, he wouldn't been stronger, and starting.

Wikipedia is the site I used, because the other ones didn't really come up with much. It had a short little section about college football stats.

Remember, Reggie Bush probably wouldn't be as fast as he is if he didn't work out, or if he didn't run and condition like he does. If Jim Thorpe worked out, and conditioned like they do now, he would've been even faster, and would've dominanted. If everyone did, then the competition would be just like it is today.

Doak played in an era were people worked harder, and if that same work effort was put into practice when Thorpe played, he would've also had better competition.

Jim Thorpe, never played football before trying out for the team. The track coach thought that he would get pounded, and that he would be done. He didn't, and he was really good.

Thorpe=greatest college football playa

The Juice! OJ Simpson.

man this is tough, Of course I will wait for arguments though.

Jim Brown. Led his team in rushing and receiving, was the kicker, punter and linebacker, and served as backup QB.

LIST FIRST but oh, hey I can't argue for another 15 hours. Thankfully no one voted on lists, but seriously man, WHY can't you talk up your pick in the first arguement. Happy you came around dyhard, now if we can get the rest of these people on board.

The reason I took longer than normal is because I spent the day at the Lake today (excuse me for having a life), and I beleive we are allowed a 24 hour time limit and if I use 21 of those hours that it is no one else's buisness but my own....

I realized that it was a waste of 1/3 of your argument. It just wasn't a good thing to do.

You got to pick the subject, and I had to argue first and go through the trouble of making the throwdown, and I got stuck at the 8th seed in the tourniment again despite the fact that I have the second best record in the tourniment so if anyone has the right to be complaining it's me

Report Offensive Comment

LSUrocks, I'm not complaining.

Report Offensive Comment

I don't get people that would prefer to give idiots the option to vote on lists. in your first arguement would it kill you to explain what is so great about your pick. I didn't say, don't have a life. I am only on here during certain small periods of mine. I don't want to waste my 1200 characters with a 22 character first arguement. This time it didn't bite you but I have seen forfeits based on voting on a list.

Report Offensive Comment

W#ell then it could of worked in either of our of our favors, and I didn't really know how i could compare them because I cannot find any stats for either of the guys, so i reall y had no idea what I was gonna use to backup my argument

Report Offensive Comment

That's cool I got no beef, just not a fan of list first arguements

^Didn't wait for all the arguments, and didn't comment on arguments. That is why I'm down 3-1.

Report Offensive Comment

I have found sites for Thorpe.

Dude, all you do is go to google and type in the guys name.

Report Offensive Comment

I'll make my last argument tonight.

Report Offensive Comment

I did, none of them kept up with stats, I looked at like 30 sites, none of them had anything about stats on either, all they had were NFL and track stats

Report Offensive Comment

And I thought you said you wern't complaining

Report Offensive Comment

Also don't worry about it, I think that when we start the 24 hour voting period your gonna dominate me,

I didn't really have much to base my argument on, so this wasn't one of my better TD's, I do better when I have some stats to back me up...

It is widely accepted that Jim Thorpe was the greatest all-around athlete in recent history. Just because you can do one thing as well as or better than he could doesn't diminish his standing. Not to mention the factors that might make that possible- Are you taller than Thorpe? Bigger? Do you have better equipment? Better training? Is the number accurate? How did they keep track of it then versus now?

Dave Krieg threw for more yards than Steve Young. He must be a better QB, right?
