I'll list differences
2B - Brandon Phillips (Reds)*
RF- Xavier Nady (Pirates)*
SP- (in place of Jurrjens) Johan Santana (Mets)*
RP- (in place of Marte) Scott Downs (Blue Jays)*
I guess I'll argue on 2nd.
Mike4redsox: GO BIG RED! said 07/02, 11:56 AM
You actually beat me in both batting differences, so I'll argue pitching
Jurrjens vs. Santana
Jair has been absolutely astounding so far. Posting a 8-3 record and a 2.94 ERA, both of which are better than Santana. His WHIP is higher than Johan's, but by only .10. Opponents are hitting .246 against both pitchers. But here's the key thing here. Both of their teams are struggling. Johan in his last 5 games has lost 4 decisions. Jair in his last 5 games has won 3 and got ND's the other 2. Jair has been the ace of this pitching staff, and without him the Braves would be close to the Nats for last place in the NL East. The Mets not having Johan, they'd be about the same place that they are right now. These guys are both aces, but only Jurrjens is performing like he's supposed to.
Marte vs. Downs
Damaso is 4-0 with 15 holds and 2 saves in his 41 appearences. Downs is 1-0 with 12 holds and 5 saves in his 39 appearences. In that time Marte has 8 more strikeouts and a lower WHIP than Downs.
Sorry got to go, I'll finish this later.

What?! I'm sorry did you just acknowledge that both Nady and Phillips are superior? Wait let's check...
Phillips has higher bat avg., higher slugging, more HRs, more RBIs, and more SB than Lopez.
Nady has higher bat avg, higher slugging, more HRs, more RBIs. than Giles.
Yep I guess you were right in agreeing with me. Just thought I'd leave that explicitly for the voters.
Now on to the pitchers...
Scott Downs has managed to post up a 1.62 ERA in a much harder division (Red Sox, Yankees, Rays) than Marte. In fact, when compared to Marte's 3.54 ERA, Downs wins easily.
But not only that, he also gave up less hits in more innings pitched than Marte and also struck out more. In more innings he also allowed less runs, 7, as compared to Marte's 16.
I think it's pretty clear, though while with less holds and wins, who has been better overall.
Jurrjens vs Santana
Let's put things in perspective...
1) their ERA difference is minimal...only .07
2) Santana has almost 50 more SOs than Jurrjens
3) Even though Santana has pitched 16 more innings, he still has LESS walks than Jurrjens
4) Santana has a better WHIP, better K/9 and K/BB.

Report Offensive CommentSANTANA OVER JURRJENS??? Jair has a better record and a lower E.R.A., plus he hasn't given up an earned run in like 23 innings.

Report Offensive Commentwaiting for arguments, but as of now leaning left, Jurrjens 8-3 with a 2.94 ERA compared to Santana's 7-7 with a 3.01 ERA.

Report Offensive CommentMaybe it has to do with Santana's vastly superior peripherals. Little things. Like WHIP, K:BB ratio, K/9...you know.

Report Offensive CommentI would take Jurrgens over Santana any day this season, he is cheaper, and performing better.

Game 7, World Series. You're facing the Boston Red Sox offense.
You'd take Jurrgens over Johan?
J23dude8821 | 07/01/08, 05:23 PM
Report Offensive Commentyes I would indeed up to this point this year take Jurrgens over Santana, Jurrgens has been more dominant, and put up better numbers, and plus Sanatana wasn't great last year, and as for the K's, a pop out or a ground ball(Jurrgens specialty) does the same thing and can keep the pitch count lower,

Except he isn't performing better. Which was sort of my point.
Porkins: Pisses Excellence | 07/01/08, 05:42 PM
Report Offensive Commentcan't argue with an 8-4 record with a 2.94 ERA compared to a 7-7 record with a 3.01 ERA, you can pull out all of those other stats, but Jurrgens is winning more and giving up less runs per 9 innings.

Report Offensive CommentOutlaw is right about Jurrgens having a better year. But... Santana does have a better WHIP,etc... And i would take Santana. And what does being cheaper have to do with this TD
JoseyRamos | 07/01/08, 08:11 PM
Report Offensive CommentJair may be having a slightly better season than Santana as of now, but when it comes down to the stretch i'd much rather have Johan Santana in my rotation. Plus, I think Downs has been much more effective than Marte.
