Best Individual Rivalries (Baseball)

State First'Argue Later

It is going to be Ted Williams and Joe DiMaggio.

Why waste the entire first argument with just a couple of names - you could have at least defended your choices.

I will however follow your "rule".

My choice Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig

Well sorry but ok

in 1941 when Williams hit .406 and DiMaggio went on his record-breaking 56-game hitting streak. And to add to that DiMaggio would win the MVP that year. Their personal rivalry would extend throughout their careers, but only DiMaggio's Yankees would win World Series titles nine times!

Lou Gehrig and Babe Ruths Rivalry was not really a SPORTS rivalry becasue

1.) they are on the same team.

2.) It was really a personal rivalry between the Gehrig household and the Ruth household.

So eh a rivalry YES but not a sports rivalry

No where did you specify that my choices had to be on different teams. How can a rivalry between 2 players on a sports team not be considered sports related? That makes no sense.
Most of the stories about Ruth and Gehrig's relationship show an intense hatred between these 2 players which even spilled onto their life off the field (Ruth has been quoted as telling Gehrig to never speak to him off the field again over a comment Gehrig's mother made about Ruth's daughter http://entertainment.howstuffworks.com/babe-ruth31.htm

Ruth didn't like the fact that Gehrig would hit the ball into the right field stands. Gehrig didn't like how boisterous Ruth was in comparison to the buisness-like, quiet of Ruth.

The story goes that they didn't make up until Gehrig's farewell speech.
And seeing how this TD is best individual rivalry (seeing how my 2 choices are individuals and had a rivalry between the 2 it counts), I will describe why my choice is the best with asking a question...
How good would Ruth or Gehrig had been if the other wasn't on the same team? Gehrigh pushed Ruth to be better and vice versa.
They were in competition as leader of the Yankees which was huge at that time

I do understand that no where in my title did it say

that my choices had to be on different teams. How can a rivalry between 2 players on a sports team not be considered sports related? That makes no sense.

But still your rivalry is more argumentative and not battle on who gets the MVP and wins the WS.

And let me answer your question.

If Ruth and Gehrig were on different teams than all this argumentative side would not be there.

And maybe a Baseball Rivalry will come!!

Gehrigh and Ruth were against each other on the same team, on the same field and in the same clubhouse. Williams and Joe D never faced each other directly and the only contact they had was during all-star games.
From your 2nd argument: But still your rivalry is more argumentative and not battle on who gets the MVP and wins the WS.
Right, because Gehrig and Ruth NEVER had good seasons at the same time and seeing how they were 2 of the best players at the time, they never competed against each other for any acknowledgments or awards...(please note the sarcasm in that statement)
Let's see.....Ruth hits 60 HRs in 1927 and doesn't even finish in the top 10 for MVP voting however Gehrig hits 47 HRs and wins the MVP....it fhat wasn't enough to make Ruth mad, I don't what would.
Who won world series between Dimaggio and Williams doesn't matter - Joe D was on some of the best teams in history, Williams was on the Sox....the world series is a TEAM accomplishment, not an individual one so that has no bearing on the rivalry between Williams and Joe D....the only thing they competed for was title of best hitter in the league.
Ruth and Gehrig competed against each other for everything!

Uh-oh.Rstowe's gonna go off.

"Best Individual Rivalries. (Baseball)"

Stowe, didn't you read the title? You can't pick baseball players who hated eachother and had an intense rivalry. How did you get all those wins anyway.

meant busineeslike quiet of Gehrig in my 2nd argument.

I dont usually vote this early but you completely blew argument 2 by refuting the title of your own throwdown, which is pretty much it for me.

1200! ding!

I will possibly argue ruth/gehrig versus wlliams/joe D in my 3rd argument unless I have something from my opponent's 3rd argument to defend/debate.

Report Offensive Comment

Reggie Jackson and Thurman Munson also would be a great choice...

I like to think of it in terms of sex...

If Joe D and Teddy made whoopie, it would probably be pretty standard

If Babe Ruth and Lou made whoopie, it would be rough and painful.

Therefore, I vote right.

I expect my banning at any moment.

Shock and Awe, Lifer. You took over the thread with shock and awe.

Report Offensive Comment

I think outside the box.

Report Offensive Comment

very nice Lifer...can I use that in my 3rd argument?

Report Offensive Comment

Heh heh...box...I had another great joke, but that will definitely get me banned.

Report Offensive Comment

Be my guest, rstowe, you can join me in banishment.

Thinkings not the only thing I do around boxes.

Okay, now I've really gone too far.

Is that in Esperanto?

Uh....Okay. Could you possibly contradict yourself any more?

Right now, I have to vote to Rich, for the better arguments
