Ok now that Manny is gone his 20 million from this year will be off the payroll from this year along with Schills wasted 13 million and the Captains 10 million a year contract end. What should they do with this money during this offseason when Manny, Tex, CC, Sheets, and Burrell are leading a deep and talented free agent class.

I say they sit pretty and reward the players that have helped them win two world series and many games since new ownership took over. Instead of taking a 20+ mil a year on a CC, Tex, or any other player that they really dont need they do this.

Lock up Paps to a good 13 million a year contract for 5 years because we definitly do not want him to leave us without a closer again. That gives them 30 million left.

Give Jason a two year 22 million contract and the second year be an option. He isnt good offensivily but hes the captain and there are no good replacements. 19 mil left.

See what Bay wants. If he wants 20 million a year then say no way jose. If he wants 14 million a year then they should give it to him. Thats only a 7 million raise and they still have 12 mill.

Other than that they dont do anything but pick up wakes option.

Disagree TD

I agree with the ideas to re sign Papi and pick up Wakes option. But thats where the agreement ends.

This offseason is too early to lock up Jason Bay. Boston needs to see how he does once AL pitchers get all the information they need on him and how he handles the Boston media attention.

If he handles these things well, then give him an extension. But no at this point in the offseason. He needs more time to prove himself in Boston. Remember, Holliday will be available after this year, so if Bay is unreasonable pony up a little more and get better value with Holliday.

Wait on Bay.

The Red Sox should then make Pudge a 2 year. 15 million dollar deal offer. If he accepts great. If not, just re sign Varietk b/c he has experience with the Boston pitchers and no one else is available.

Lets say Pudge takes the deal. That gives them 23 million left.

I say sign Ben Sheets to a deal is he willing to take a 5 yr/75 million dollar deal, which is slightly below value, but he would take less to come to a contender.

If not, Boston should sit tight for the rest of the offseason.

Corrections i was talking about Johnathan not Papi when i said resign paps but im sure you agree with that so i wil just argue the differences.

get better value with Holliday.- Im not too sure Holliday is better value. I mean he has slightly better stats but remember he gets a big boost from Coors where he hits .371 and 8 more HR and almost 30 more RBI. Plus his agent is Boras and that means he will want 20 mil a year. Bay on the other hand would be fine with a Drew like contract of 14 mil a year.

Wait on Bay- That makes sense but then he might have a monster year and want tons of cash. He also might get upset with his agent and get Boras which means he will want even more cash. I say lock him up and hope it works out so he doesnt want tons of cash

You want them to get rid of the captain and the guy who has caught the most no hitters ever by a catcher. Thats no coincidence the guy knows how to call a ballgame and researches like a beast. Sure Pudge hits a lot better but wont know the pitchers and wouldnt get the respect to be able to lead the team.

Ben Sheets- No 5 year deals for mr inury prone. THey dont need him either with Wake, JB, Dice, Jon, Clay, and tons of depth

"You want them to get rid of the captain and the guy who has caught the most no hitters ever by a catcher."

Yes I do. Pudge is just as good or slighlty worse on defense and can still actually hit. Varitek is htting .222 and leads the team in strikeouts. IT is time to move on from 'Tek.

He was great for a long time, but now he is too much of a liability on offense. I want Pudge.

Its very true that Holliday is a great hitter at Coors, if Boston played in a pitchers park I would be concerned; however Fenway isnt a big park in the corners and Holliday would be fine there.....

If Jason Bay hires Boras and goes looking for a mega deal that would be fine with me. With Sheets on my roster a young pitcher like Bucholz would be expendable in a deal if I needed to trade for a replacement.

Sheets with give the Sox depth like no other team. Adding Sheets would give Boston 4 perrenial aces in their rotation along with a crafty knuckleballer.

Sheets is a bargain for 75 million and is worth the risk. When he is healthy he is an ace.

He was great for a long time, but now he is too much of a liability on offense. I want Pudge.- The thing is that pitching wins in postseaons and Pudge wont be able to call games with our pitchers like Jason can. He has been he catcher for the guys ever since they played for us and they all have good relationships with him. Even with his .222 we have a top 5 offense so we dont need Pudge

Its not just that Coors is a small park but rather that the gravity differences makes the ball fly. To stop that from affecting the game they made the park pretty huge. Thats why he hits .371 there because the OF is huge for singles/doubles/and triples. At fenway his HR total might not be hurt but his average will be.

Ok why wait and might have to sign him to a mega deal when they could just resign him now and if it doesnt workk out not that big of a deal.

Sheets has been injured contanly so no way any team including the Sox will give him a 5 even 4 year deal because of that.

Ok Clay has the talent to become an ace so sticking with him would be cheaper by 15 mil and might get the same thing.

Also in the 09 offseason Pedoria, Lester, and Youk will want more cash so they cant waste 15

You are seeming to forget that Pudge is a great defensive catcher.

He will have plenty of time to learn all the pitchers tendencies and will be ready long in time for the postseason.

And mark it down right now, Sheets will get at least 5 years. Im not sure who will give him the deal, but someone will.

While Holliday has benfited from playing at Coors, he will continue to evolve as a hitter and will learn to hit w/o the benefit of Coors field before long.

In the 09 offseason the Sox will have 9 million more to spend when Lugo comes off the book along with the 9 million they have coming off the books this year. Plus Wakefields contract after this year along with the 18 million.

The Sox will have plenty of money to spend on those 3 when the time comes to re sign them. Dont worry about that.

Sheets would give them another ace pticher which will be needed with the Yankees offense, and as of this year, the Rays as well.

This move would give the Sox unprecedented pitching depth and make tham faovrites for another WS.

million is supposed to finish my last argument but due to 1200 word limit it didnt go in

August 10, 2008  07:05 PM ET

You have them spending 36 million this offseaosn and then signing Holliday-Bay to a 14-22 million deal along with Lester, D-ped, and Youk to 4 million raises. Where do they get all that money when no player comes off payroll other than Bays 7.5 to 2010 and some relief pitchers

August 10, 2008  07:42 PM ET

Julio Lugo and Wakefield.

August 11, 2008  04:24 PM ET

Lugo is not coming off the payroll he signed a 4 year 9 mil per year deal and that is for 07, this year, o9, and 2010 get your facts straight.

Wake has an option why wouldnt they pick up his 4 mil iption when he can pitch
