Which is the most intriguing matchup to the nation as a whole in NCAAF in week 1: Utah@Michigan or Illinois@Missouri?
Cassidy's House: Priceless said 08/20, 05:30 AM
I am saying the Illinois-Missouri game is more intriguing because:
The Missouri Tigers, of the 4 teams, has the best shot @ a National Championship & it can all go way wrong right out of the gate as they r the #6 team in the nation going into this game.
Missouri's opponent is no pushover either at #20 in the nation, coming off
a huge victory over division rival Ohio State in the second to last game of 2007 regular season.
Reasons why I dont think that the Utah-Michigan game is all that intriguing:
Michigan is projected to have a terrible year, not even being ranked in the preseason Top 25 due to lots of new players, a new coach, and implementing his new system.
Utah is another team on the outside looking in at the Top 25, although they did get more AP votes than Michigan did. Some say if Utah can go undefeated they could get a BCS bowl invite. I say that dream dies right out of the gate here.
Utah will not pull a Appalachian St. here by shocking the college football world even if they were to upset Michigan who can easily use the new coach, new system, etc. excuses that they are just working the kinks out and will be fine. Win or lose neither story=compelling.

First off, Big 10 = weak.
Easily, easily, easily the fourth strongest conference, at best.
There is no way that Mizzou loses to Illinois. A team at the top of the Big 12 should have no time swatting the fly that is the Fighting Illini. Sure, Illinois beat Ohio State, but did you see what happened when they both played programs from REAL conferences in their bowl games?
Rose Bowl: USC 49 - Illinois 17
BCS Championship: LSU 38 - Ohio State 24
And who was the star of the game for Illinois? Rashard Mendenhall. Where is he this year? Yea, thats right, he's a Steeler.
And please do not compare the Utes to Appalachian State. Utah has played in bowl games 7 out of the last 9 years, and going on 5 years in a row, AND WON EVERY BOWL GAME. That includes the Fiesta Bowl in 2005, where they finished 4th in the country.
Michigan, on the other hand, is starting a new system, with a new coach. Now, while I would agree that Rich Rodriguez is a huge step up for the program, there is no question that they are in a tough, transitional year.
In the preseason AP poll, Utah received 17 more votes the UM. In the USA Today poll, UM had 52 more then the Utes. It's going to be close.

What does the Big 10 being weak have to do with which of these two matchups are better? Nowhere anywhere will you find that I have ever said that the Big 10 was the strongest anything.
"Easily, easily, easily the fourth strongest conference, at best."
Even if I agreed or disagreed with you on that one, what does that have to do with which of the two matchups in the title of this TD is more intriguing?
So Ilinois has no shot to beat Missouri, eh? At the end of last season I saw Illinois beat Ohio State, a team that ended up playing for the national championship, and dont think that was mostly because of departed RB Rashard Mendenhall. Last year was the stepping stone to this year for QB Juice Williams. This is the year their strong recruiting class of 2006 kicks in. Missouri is no USC, and they will be putting no beatdown on the Illini no matter how smoothly you think the Tigers 2007 campaign went.
Illinois is going to get more athletic at LB with Brit Miller moving to the middle and Martez Williams stepping into a starting role on the outside. The Illini will be flying uder the radar without a name RB and all the pressure/expectations r on Mizzou=upset in making
Schuyler said 08/21, 08:50 AM
The reason why I said that the Big Ten was the weakest conference the following -
1. No Big Ten team is going to beat any high ranking Big 12 team.
2. The Illinois beating Ohio State was not significant. If Ohio State showed up against LSU, maybe it would have been, but they didn't. (OSU was supposed to be better then USC, but Illinois helped to prove that theory wrong)
Sure, Mizzou is a team a lot more relevant to the national championship picture then Michigan or Utah. But I would rather watch a close game then a blowout, regardless of the teams, and there is no way that Mizzou doesn't beat Illinois by at least 3 TDs. Utah and Michigan, on the other had, as stated in my previous argument, is going to be close.

"No Big Ten team is going to beat any high ranking Big 12 team."
Says u, ur crystal ball, or as a product from a tarot card layout?
NOBODY predicted Appalachian St was going to go in the Big House in week 1 last yr & shock Michigan until after the fact when there were a million geniuses w/ 20/20 hindsight.
Dont think u wont see some serious upsets this yr, & now that Mizzou has a bulls eye target on its back almost as big as Florida, every team will be gunning to knock them off.
Illinois has a dynamic QB & tons of Ron Zook's recruits from 2006 who r going to blossom up into your face this yr. Ur speaking like a homer w/ comments that "No Big Ten team is going to beat any high ranking Big 12 team". Thats what fans say when they think they know it all or are speaking from team pride. Considering ur from NY & I havent looked @ your profile, I am going to assume ur not a Mizzou fan, just a guy who thinks what he thinks is ALWAYS translating to what happens on the field. Not the case.
OSU never shows up in bowl games lately, but they are regular season dominant, and for the Illinois to upset them was HUGE.
First of all, Mizzo-Illinos=no blowout. Utah=ZZzzzz
Schuyler said 08/21, 04:27 PM
Are you comparing Illinois vs Mizzou to Appy St vs Michigan? It's not that big of a difference, but you made your point, the Illini are a long shot.
And when is the last time OSU beat a good team outside of the Big 10? Tell me that. They aren't only not showing up at bowl games, they aren't showing up at any games against a good opponent. Ask Florida and LSU.
I am no homer here. As you said, I am from New York. Don't really root for any Big Ten or Big 12 team. I root for a Big East and an ACC team.
Utah and Michigan, now that will be the game I'm watching.
And since I have the extra space,
How much pleasure do you get out of cheating Cass?
Does it still feel good to win when you forge votes?
If you aren't voting for me, at least vote against the cheater.

I'm voting for Shuyler because, like me, Cass has the ability to develop male sexual organs when the population becomes lop-sidedly female, and there's only so many of those we need around here.

Definately arguments for both sides. Utah-Michigan seems to be between closer teams(talent-wise), while the matchup between Illinois and Missouri has much better teams, but it could turn into a blowout if Missouri plays well, and Juice falls apart without the playmaker that made him look good last season.

3rd strongest...behind the Big 12 and SEC. Anyway,
Michigan and Utah is more intriguing cuz I mean we saw Illinois/ Missouri last year. Both return most starters so it should be very much the same and Missouri winning.
Michigan is breakin in a new system and this came will be a factor in determinin how the rest of the season will go.

For once Roy didn't pick the slam dunk..... and it's going to cost..... doesn't everyone want to see how RR is going to do in his first game with his highly touted spread offense in traditional Michigan-land..... I'm very interested to see how that's going to go and it isn't a slam dunk win for them either....

I was at the Rose Bowl last year..... Juice Williams was such a non threat that USC covered their four wide receivers with three DBs..... eight in the box the entire game...... on the rare pass attempt, Brian Cushing would slide out from OLB and cover the slot..... receivers were running wide open and Williams couldn't find them..... and with eight in the box, they stuffed the run, except for a few awesome Mendenhall runs..... no Mendenhall this year boys.....
