I believe that the Lakers need a veteran. They need a grizzled old man that they can rely on to bring the pain for 15-20 minutes a game to spell the recovering from injury Andrew Bynum. As I look at the names on the free agency market, only one jumps out at me: Dikembe Mutombo.

Now before you laugh, Mutombo is perfect. Yes, he is 42 years old but he played very well for the Rockets last season replacing the injured Yao Ming. Mutombo averaged 16 minutes per game with the Rockets last season, and averaged 5.1 rebounds with 3.4 of those coming off of the defensive glass. Add to that another 1.2 blocks per game and you get that old man leadership that this team needed in the Finals.

He should be the choice. DJ, it's your turn.

Mutombo is freakin ancient and he needs to retire but he is too much of a humanitarian......Making money and opening hospitals in Africa (which is honorable and all ) but Stern needs to step in and force him to retire.....

Its painful watching his robotic butt get up and down the court.......Plus his knees have to hurt, I bet he is swallowing vicodin by the bucketful......

Main reason I say no to Mutombo is because Bynum isnt guaranteed great health and if Bynum misses 15-20 games, Mutombo cant play 28-30mpg they would need if Andrew is hurt......

I wanted to say Theo Ratliff but word is he is about to sign with the Sixers......

So I say Jamaal Magliore.......He was in the doghouse with Dallas but he can give the Lakers 15-18 minutes behind Bynum......He is just 30 and in 06-07 he had 6.5ppg and 6.1rpg in just 20mpg with the Blazers......

At 6-11 and 265 pounds he is a big body that can rebound, get up and down the court better than Mutombo and play defense......

If Bynum misses 20 games, DJ? Umm...Mutombo replaced Yao who missed 26 games last year. Also that was a 41 year old Mutombo so I really fail to see your point there. As a matter of fact your whole argument is based on assumptions so lets gets to some fact shall we. Fact one: Mutombo's 5.4 rebounds is more rebounds than Chris Mihm and DJ Mbenga had combined. Fact two: His 1.2 blocks per game are equal to what Mihm and Mbenga combined for. Fact three: The Lakers have no one older than Derrick Fisher and he's 33. During the Finals they needed someone to lean on. Someone other than Fisher and Bryant who had playoff experience. Maybe someone like Mutombo who did play in the Finals with the 76'ers against the very same Lakers.

Yes, Mutombo is old but I would much rather have him than the career underachiever that is Magloire. The former Kentucky Wildcat played 31 games for two teams (Nets and Mavs) and averaged a whopping 1.8 points and 2.1 rebounds last season. He's nothing more than a malcontent who can't stay on one team for too long. The Lakers do not need malcontents. They need another strong leader. That folks is Dikembe.

Magliore is a better option if they need extended minutes at center should Bynum go down.......Mutombo might have a heart attack or a stroke while he is running up and down the court.......

41????

Common knowledge they cant find a birth certificate for him and he might be closer to 45 or even 50......

Magliore is a career underachiever???

He has made an All Star team, under achiever's dont do that.......

He has only averaged 24mpg due to his inability to stay out of foul trouble and as a backup that wont be a big problem.......He will be needed for 15-18mpg and should Bynum get hurt......

Phil would have to back up Magliore with Chris Mihm especially since Turiaf walked away to Golden State......Which caused this big mess in the first place in looking for a backup C

Inability to stay out of foul trouble? And that's what you want for a back-up? Are you kidding me? How can he spell Bynum if he is in foul trouble all the time? Anyway, you are killing me with the age thing. Yeah, he's probably older than 42 but the proof is in the pudding and he's getting it done on the court. You want a center that can play 15 to 18 minutes a game? Well Mutombo averaged 16.8 last season. You want a Center who can step up when the starter gets hurt? Well Mutombo stepped in for 26 games with Yao injured. The only real knock on Mutombo is that he doesn't score but that isn't an issue with a back-up core of Vujacic, Farmarr, Luke Walton, and Trevor Ariza. They are all capable enough of picking up the scoring load and deferring to the Captain of the Court.

The Lakers need defense. They need someone who can pull down the boards, initiate the attack and can stop opposing centers in the paint. All of these things Mutombo can, and has done. Even at the ancient age you describe him as.

He is the choice. Face it.

*DJ keeping his cool as promised*

LOL

Phil is the master at working with head case type NBA players.......Mags is no more of a head case than Ron Atrtest, Stephen Jackson, Dennis Rodman but Jackson is the Zen Master at getting people to buy into his philosophy and drink the ZEN Kool-Aid......Jackson isnt the best at X's and O's but at motivating players and getting them to go along with the program.......He is a master psychologist and great at this......You know this EJ......

Mutombo was a phantom starter when Yao went down and wasnt out there as much as Mags could be (if Bynum gets hurt)......Mags at 30 is capable of 28-30 mpg......Mags has been the victim of being in places where coaches platooned their bigs.......But Mags has proven he can play his All Star appearance in 2003-04.......Mutombo has fallen off in recent year's; he is no longer the defensive presence he used to be......He has been living on that rep for a few years and it is sad to see him go out like Kareem Abdul Jabbar.......Hanging on for a paycheck......In his prime he was a great defensive player (although Shaq destroyed him in the Finals vs the Sixers, lol).......But he is way past his prime.......

i agree j hova, the lakers could use some backbone in their frontcourt. Look at the difference P.J. Brown made for the Celtics

August 20, 2008  12:18 PM ET
