So...the Celtics have decided to sign Darius Miles, huh?

As a recap some folks, Portland released Miles after NBA assigned Dr???s determined his knee injury was ???career ending.??? By releasing Miles, Portland still pays his salary ($9 mil/yr for 08/09 and 09/10), but the numbers don???t count against the cap. But Miles??? annual salary will go back on Portland???s book if he plays at least 10 NBA games each of the next 2 years.

This is not about hate for Miles, as most NBA fans know he can play if he EVER decides to give the effort. Though I am pissed he did not give that effort after signing a fat contract with Portland.

This is also not about suspicions that Danny Ainge is taking his revenge because Portland gave him Sebastian Telfair and took his chance to draft Brandon Roy.

No, this TD is purely about whether or not Miles can help the Celtics, and whether signing Miles provide more risks or more rewards. In other words, is this a good move, or a bad move?

Having said that, I say signing Miles is a bad move. If you accept this TD, I will give the reasons later...

I say its a good thing.

What does Boston have to lose?

He was signed to a non-guaranteed contract. He still has too go to camp and make the team.

This kid has tons of potential. Huge upside. 6-foot-9 Miles has been working out for a lot of teams.

From CNNSI story = "He was much better than I thought he would be,'' a member of the Mavericks' camp said. "On a scale of 1 to 10, I was expecting him to be 6. But he was a good, solid 8.''

Although not in basketball shape just yet, he believes he is at a 100%. He is 26 and if he can contribute anything off the bench it would be a plus. If he makes the team they can get a potentially really good player for a bargain basement price on a already deep team.

He has had attitude issues in the past but that was when he was young and on younger teams. With a team full of vets he will get pimp slapped quicker than a hooker on the Point in he tries that sheat in Boston.

What does Boston have to lose? How about team chemistry? For this TD's sake, let???s say he makes the roster. My arguments are:

1) He hasn???t played in 2 years.

2) His knee was determined by the NBA to be career ending. How does he not make progress in 2 years but suddenly become 100% four months later?

3) His success relied on ability to run, slash, jump, etc... I think those skills are gone.

4) He couldn???t make a jump shot even in his hay days.

5) Nor was he a defensive stopper.

6) He makes poor decisions...for every steal, there is a turn over.

7) There is a ten game suspension when he makes it back.

8) A serial head case. He couldn???t even get along with Maurice Cheeks!

9) A history of being a locker room cancer and chemistry killer? Check with the Clippers and Cavaliers.

10) He claimed to be a ???leader??? in helping the young Blazers to rebuild, but wanted out when things went bad and the losses mounted.

If Boston envisioned Miles a Posey replacement, they will be utterly disappointed.

First off you have 12+ TD's under you're belt. If you haven't figure it out yet, stop copying and pasting you're apostrophes from Word. Looks like the Riddler typed you're argument.

"He hasn't played in 2 years." - Thats why you have tryouts. Nothing is guaranteed too him. Chemistry becomes an issue you dump him. Easy as that.

"His knee was determined by the NBA to be career ending" - How do you get invited to NBA camp with a non-guaranteed contract without having skill. Why don't they just invite ME to camp then?

"His success relied on ability to run, slash, jump, etc... I think those skills are gone" - Good thing Celtics have paid scouts to think for them and not you. People who are paid for there evaluation in possible talent. They obviously saw potential.

"A serial head case" - You definitely have a lot of skills. NBA scout , psychiatrist , devious villainous adversary to Batman.

" A history of being a locker room cancer and chemistry killer." He was a kid then.He came into the league at what 18? I'm 26 and still act like I'm 12.

Doubt Boston invited him to camp so he could be a leader and inspire Perice. He is a POSSIBLE piece to a repeat puzzle. Emphasis on POSSIBLE.

Yes, I only have 12 TD???s, but I like my winning % more than yours. I may not know how FanNation filters out apostrophes and such, but I can spell and use grammars correctly. You write like a twelve year as well.

Yeah, Boston saw potential. The entire NBA sees his potential, but the league has been waiting for him for show it since his rookie year!

Perhaps the 10 game suspension pertains to his miracle healing ability in the past 4 months when he couldn???t do it in the past 2 yrs.

Again, this TD is based on the assumption that Miles get signed for the season. Think about it...Cassell started to **** last year because he wasn???t playing. You think Miles will sit quietly the whole year knowing he is trying to revive his career? It???s a time bomb ticking.

As for the expectation that KG, PP, and RA keeps Miles in check....I think the Lakers had 4 HOF vets a few years back. Last time I checked, it didn???t work out too well for them.

If you have to sign him with a contingent plan of dumbing him once he acts up, is that really a decision with more rewards than risks??? Hard to justify that logic.

"I like my winning % more than yours" - well you should. Its better than mine. Just like I like my amount of votes to your's.

"You write like a twelve year as well". - Thayre is know basssist for theis Ludakris comint. Please, you're reaching now junior.

"TD is based on the assumption that Miles get signed for the season" - Is it now? Thats not what your title says. "Celtics signing Darius Miles is a BAD move!" - When in trouble shift gears right? There is nothing bad about bringing someone into camp on a non-guaranteed contract.

I really don't understand what you are trying to say in your 4th paragraph so Ill just address the last comment. Miles has proven to be stupid but not stupid enough to soil his last shot in the NBA.

"If you have to sign him with a contingent plan of **dumbing** ( the irony in this mistake is gold,no?) him once he acts up, is that really a decision with more rewards than risks?" - Whats so illogical about it. You have a lower tier player who doesn't gel with the team he is expendable. If he contributes you get more than what was expected. Maybe you're misinterpreting the meaning of the word logic.Potential gain=little investment.

Good 1st opening argument right

August 22, 2008  04:02 PM ET

Agrippa love the "SILVER HAWKS". ha

August 22, 2008  04:04 PM ET

^^^^

Someone remembers them? Nice.

August 22, 2008  04:21 PM ET

Miles is a malcontent and won't help the Celtics so much as he will hurt them. I don't know if KG and Pierce will be able to keep him in check. THis is Miles's last chance, so he better make the best of it and not sluff off like he did in POR after getting that sweetheart of a contract.

August 22, 2008  04:26 PM ET

Miles most likely knows that he messed up. But with guys like KG, Ray Allen, etc. the veterans can probably get him inc heck, and show him a thing or too, as well. If playing on a championship team with potential Hall of Famers doesn't help him, nothing well. It's worth the risk in my opinion.

But it my opinion, it's also too early to vote. So I'll wait for more arguments.

^^^
Thanks 0x NBA/NFL Champion. I guess Skybill40 thought this was a opinion poll.

August 22, 2008  04:34 PM ET

Does nobody remember that this guy was 14 and 5 before the injury?

With KG, Paul Pierce, and Ray Ray to whip him into shape, this should turn out to be a good signing. They have nothing to lose.

August 22, 2008  04:45 PM ET

Exactly what SportsGuy said. The Celtics are the most storied franchise in the NBA, and they're coming off of a TITLE. They're not gonna put up with him long. He has an attitude? He's gone.

And they are a championship team, so it's not like they're gonna be counting on him for much.

August 22, 2008  04:47 PM ET

Whatever, Agrippa. Are you upset I didn't vote for you? Do you not realize that I can change my vote, too?

I voted and that's that. YOu haven't made me a believer that Miles will be able to play at the level (or whatever that was he did before) worthy of a new contract with the new NBA champ. For that matter, I wouldn't be willing to take a flyer on a person who had an injury to his knee that was deemed career ending by medical professionals. It's simply not worth the risk when there are better players around.

August 22, 2008  04:48 PM ET

Can't be with you on this one Odenator. With Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen and Paul Pierce hammering him along with Doc Rivers being the player's coach that he is, Darius will be fine.

Plus it's a pretty low risk move here. The second he acts up he's gone.

August 22, 2008  04:53 PM ET

All those who thinks Boston can cut Miles the moment he acts up (and he will...), you need to know that if Miles makes the regular season roster, his NBA minimum salary will count against the Celtics. It's not that simple folks.

Remember, this TD is based on the assumption that Miles makes the roster on opening night. Not just training camp or pre-season.

August 22, 2008  04:58 PM ET

True but the NBA minimum is like peanuts to the rest of the league. They can fill that slot with 10 day contracts or something or snatch someone from the D-League and pay the extra in luxury tax.

If he was making Stephon's money would I see that part of the argument.

August 22, 2008  04:58 PM ET

Miles is 6-9 and still just 26. Amare Stoudemire came back from it. I know they're pretty different, but Amare's killing down low now. So why can't Miles come back, either?

The reward outweighs the risk, in my opinion. If he's alright, they can get a good bench player. If not, they have to pay a minimum salary, which isn't a big hit to them. And it's not like he's gonna kill the chemistry. Boston had a bunch of veterans who aren't gonna let him ruin the team chemistry.

August 22, 2008  05:10 PM ET

"Amare Stoudemire came back from it. I know they're pretty different, but Amare's killing down low now. So why can't Miles come back, either?"

The difference? Career ending. Stoudemire's was not tabbed as being that severe. Maybe Miles will prove all the doubters wrong.. then again, I doubt it.

August 22, 2008  05:52 PM ET

"Whatever, Agrippa. Are you upset I didn't vote for you? Do you not realize that I can change my vote, too? "

Negative my good sir. I could careless how and where you vote. I merely made an observation. I respect your right to choose. I am pro choice. Whats so compelling about his argument though.

August 22, 2008  05:58 PM ET

The point I find most compelling is the fact that his injury was deemed career ending and he could re-injure his knee at any moment and thus wouldn't make any solid contribution to the Celtics. Not to mention the fact he's a malcontent and will remain so despite the influence of his teammates. He has shown poor decision making throughout his career and can't shake his drug habit (the impending suspension says enough).

I'm not down on giving someone a chance to prove themselves, but I can't say that this is one of those times. All of the more trivial things aside, the injury speaks enough for me. Who knows. Maybe he'll prove us all who doubt him as wrong. I suppose that remains to be seen.

August 22, 2008  06:15 PM ET

Very true. However any player on the court is open to injury. He has been working out for multiple teams and seems to be holding up. Its a risk but I dont see where its a mistake to sign a lottery player who may offer a huge upside

August 22, 2008  06:19 PM ET

Better arguments right plus i hate it when people needlessly insult people in their arguments. If you wanna fight at least do it in the comments section lol.

If Miles was signed to a 5 year 30 Mil deal than yah its a bad signing. But there really sint anything to lose in a a non-guaranteed contract.

August 22, 2008  06:27 PM ET

I agree that anyone who steps on the court risks career ending injury. For that matter, stepping out of your door or rolling out of your bed could potentially be hazardous as well.

While I do understand that his workouts have gone well, I still don't see the risk vs. reward ending up more favorable in the latter. The same can be said for whoever ends up signing Shawn Livingston (if ever). Now, I know that Miles''s injury is not as severe as Livingston's. it's still a nasty one and wouldn't wish it upon anyone.

I fancy myself as a good armchair GM and in most cases and usually have others see my side; obviously, this is not to be between the two of us. No worries. This is not the first time both you and I have had a disagreement and will certainly not be the last. Such is life on Fannation. :)

Then we shall leave it at that. Again Odenator not trying to come off as a di**. Just typing what comes to mind
