NFL: Although it does not happen that often, it's annoying when it does... I believe the rules should be changed.
The Big Cat said 08/22, 05:07 PM
I don't believe that in professional football (NFL) that a game should be allowed to end in a tie. It does not happen that often but I can recall when it's happened twice in one week and more than a few times in a year a some years ago. Sometimes we go an entire season without seeing it but it does happen.
I just think that on a professional level that two football teams should fight it out until one out performs the other to some degree. Football is just the type of sport that a tie does not make sense. It's like not manly or something. I think about all the tough names used to describe the game and the word tie just does not fit.
I'm also not crazy about the team scroing first in OT winning, but maybe I'll save that for another TD.
Anyway, what's your thoughts on ties within the NFL? Should they be allowed, yes or no? I say no!

"I don't believe that in professional football (NFL) that a game should be allowed to end in a tie."
This is like a seriously personal belief, opinion @ best; the NFL players/owners & its fans across the country who have not stood in protest outside the NYC HQ of the NFL in protest over the tie rule speaks volumes.
"It does not happen that often but I can recall when it's happened twice in one week and more than a few times in a year a some years ago. Sometimes we go an entire season without seeing it but it does happen."
So something that does not happen that often constitutes a rule change that has gone back since the NFL began?
"I just think that on a professional level that two football teams should fight it out until one out performs the other to some degree."
I agree in the playoffs, but in the regular season if u cant outscore ur opponent in 4 quarters u need to suck up & deal baby.
"Football is just the type of sport that a tie does not make sense."
Why? Futbol is soccer in Europe and ties are the norm. Basically the roots of the sport r the same=score more than your opponent or u tie.
A rule to change in the NFL? Holding is a reviewable replay.
The Big Cat said 08/22, 10:53 PM
Of course it's an opinion C, what would you like it to be?
How can you agree with me in a playoff scenario but not a regular season game?
I don't think you are arguing the point. I'm not talking about reviewable plays as you mention in your last comment.
Also, you actaully compared American Football (NFL) to European Football (Soccer) to the NFL??? The roots of the sport??? Please explain? Do you mean Rugby?
What advantage is there to either team playing having ties in the NFL? What don't we do it in baseball, basketball, etc.?
Because it doesnot happen that often and it does not have much of an impact, it should not be a scenario that should take place.
I believe that sports (competions) are suppose to have a winner and a loser. American football is all about dominance.
It's the only game that is played in just about any and all weather conditions (except when lightning is a serious threat). It's a tough rugged sport. I say let teams dog it out until there is a winner.
There may not be any big or notable protests bu tthat does not mean people (fans, coaches, players) are happy with the outcome.
I also believe it could help be a motivator.
Cassidy's House: Priceless said 08/23, 02:10 AM
I would like your opinion to actually be based on something so immediately worthy of a rule change, that one percent of me could actually come to terms with maybe agreeing with one percent of your point....but alas, I digress....
The regular season has been this way forever for a REASON: It works!
The NFL has seen to it that the playoffs games cant end in a tie, duh, but who the F cares if you get a tie in the regular season? It means neither team was worthy of a victory because neither team could get its shjt together and score a freakin field goal so neither team deserves a win. DEAL!
Along comes Big Cat and suddenly we need to change the NFL regular season tie rule. Hey FanNation, jump on his bandwagon will ya?
"I also believe it could help be a motivator."
Help be a motivator to what? Now that there is no more ties, suddenly NFL players are going to play harder? They werent playing that hard cuz in the back of their minds they were cool with settling for a tie?
I am not apologizing for not buying into this theory at all.
The first HR an ump got wrong this year and everybody was crying for instant replay in baseball. Leave well enough alone.
The Big Cat said 08/23, 01:45 PM
So you think that a tie means nothing during the regular season and that it's because the particular teams can't get there stuff together.
That's interesting! Did you see some of the teams that I mentioned in a comment that have tied? Did you notice some of the scores?
Once again this is not about a replay issue.
This is just about a rule that hasnot ever helped the game. You've been all over with your reasoning but you have not given one "real" legitamte reason as to why the rule should remain the same. A tie in American Football is just not something that fits the sport very well.
Football to me is one of the most competitive sports in this country if not in the world. It should be a simple standard that a team must win the game. Let them figure out a way to do so. The games are typically three hours long. I've been to a couple of six plus hour baseball games. I think the NFL players and fans could handle it just fine.
Just beacuse the rule has existed does not mean that it should or needs to remain that way. It does not help the sport. Who does it benefit???
I'm not asking for you to apologize, I'm asking for you to give a reasonable, telling argument!
Cassidy's House: Priceless said 08/23, 02:05 PM
The NFL has done a very good job of limiting the number of tie scores to which teams play, from sudden death overtime instituted in 1974, to two point conversions (adopted in 1994).
Since 1974, the most tie scores in a season has been 2 - in 1986 and 1997.
In the 1973 season, there were 7 such scores with the Browns, Chiefs, Broncos, and Packers playing to a draw twice each.
Since 1990, there have been only 3 ties played, an average of 18.7 a year.
YOU WANT TO CHANGE A RULE FOR AN EVENT THAT HAS HAPPENED 3 TIMES SINCE 1990? Thats ridiculous.
Since 1974, the average number of tie scores is .5 yearly.
In going back on 35 years of NFL history, we cant even say there is an average of 1 tie a year!
The last time the New England Patriots tied a game? 1967.
The most recent tie was Week 10 of the 2002 NFL Season, when the Falcons and Steelers played to a 34-34 draw in Pittsburgh; it was the first NFL tie in 5-years.
No ties for 6 years! There is no reason to change this NFL rule NOW, because this shjt hardly ever happens.

I think in the event of no one scoring in the allotted time, they should go with the college OT.

I, hate the rain and sunny weather,
And i, hate the beach and mountains too;
(and) I dont like a thing about the city, no, no
And i, i, i, hate the countryside too!
And i, hate everything about you!
... everything about you!
I, dont like a thing about your mother,
And i, hate your daddys guts too,
I, dont like a thing about your sister,
cause i, i, i, think sex is overrated too.
And i, get sick when Im around, i, cant stand to be around,
I, hate everything about you!
Everything about you,
Everything about you,
Everything about you!
Some say I got a bad attitude,
But that dont change the way I feel about you,
And if you think this thought might bring me down,
Look again cause I aint wearin no frown!
I dont really care about your sister
Forget the little **** cause I already kissed her
One thing that I did to your lady
I put her on the bed and she didnt even say maybe
I know you know everybody knows
The way it comes, the way its gonna go
You think its sad,
And thats too bad,
cause Im havin
A ball hatin
Every little thing about you!
Everything about you, everything about...
I, get sick when Im around
I, cant stand to be around
I, hate everything about........... you! hehe
