Do you agree with the Falcons decision to let Matt Ryan start right away?

No, I dont.

Chris Redman should have started right away.

Atlanta should have given the line time to gell as a group and become more familiar with all the blocking schemes and the more complicated blitzes that teams dont show in the preseason..

I would have let Ryan sit the first 7-8 weeks of the season and let him watch Chirs Redman and increase his knowledge of thier system.

Throwing a rookie QB into the fire doest normally work out that well, look at David Carr, Joey Harrington and many more.

Not saying Ryan will be a bust by any means, but he would have benefited more from sitting for a little bit of the season.

Agree with Atlanta and think Ryan should be starting?

TD!

Well obviously I say yes.

It is no different if he plays Week 1 or Week 8, he is going to take some hits regardless.

They are paying him hand over fist with that huge contract of his, I truly believe they should start developing him in game right away.

Let's face it, Matt Ryan won't learn much from a scrub QB such as Chris Redman if they had an above-average quarterback I would be on board with the sit and learn idea.

Let Ryan play out the whole 16 game season and avoid the transition period in the middle of the season and just insert it at the start when all teams are learning.

Matt Ryan was drafted to be the starting quarterback of the Atlanta Falcons, let's treat him like that.

Yes, Matt Ryan is going to take some hits either way. BUt why increase the number of hits he is going to take if you dont have to? The Falcons arent going to contend this year, and there is no reason to rush Ryan and throw him into the fire right away.

Matt Ryan will learn from alot more people than Chris redman. The offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach will be showing Ryan lots of things during this time, and if Chris Redman can contribute anything, it would be an added bonus.

The Falcons o-line this year wont be great, but they will get better as the season goes on. Let the line take their lumps first, then bring in Matt and let him do his thing behind an improved offensive line.

Ryan would have also learned alot by simply being able to watch film and learning from Redmans mistakes and what he would do differently.

I feel Matt Ryan would have been able to benefit more from starting the season on the bench.

Last time I checked you get a lot better with more time on the field.

If Ryan practices everything at practice speed, he won't get as good as if he were to combine his reps at practice and played every week.

Matt Ryan is an NFL Qb, he was the Atlanta Falcons first round draft pick, he is the guy who is supposed to succeed Mike Vick as the Atlanta Falcons #1 quarterback, so shouldn't he start?

I do not buy into benching rookie quarterbacks because they are worried to start them too soon. If the player is going to be a bust, they will be a bust no matter when you play them. But if a player is going to work out, they will regardless of when he is played.

Your point about the Falcons having no chance helps my argument, if they have no chance to win, why not develop their future quarterback and highest paid player? Look at JaMarcus Russel last year for examples on why quarterbacks should be started early, he didn't play until the final weeks of last season and now that the Raiders have a decent team, Russel will still be adjusting to the NFL.

The Falcons should not make the same mistake with Matt Ryan

Comparing Atlanta and Oakland is ridiculous. The 2 are franchises in 2 completely different stages for their teams. Atlanta is doing the right thing and trying to rebuild, while Oakland is overspending for veterans and trying to win right now. And besides, Russel sat out way too long and was still learning the playbook.

I said Ryan should sit because the Falcons have no chance to win; and by that I meant he could get hurt or pick up some bad habits.

Ryan needs a little more time to keep learning the system and continuing to gell with his Wide Receivers, as well as letting his line develop and learn all the blocking schemes at the start of the year.

There is no reason for the Falcons to start Ryan right away and let him get hurt or let all his weaknesses be exposed right away. Let Ryan sit for a little longer and continue to progress then throw him into the fire.

But right away??? I say no.

I am getting sick and tired of you using the gel with receivers bs.

He will get used to his receivers even quicker if he is thrust into a game, in college receivers come and go and they gel pretty damn quick, so do not use the "gel" excuse.

If the Falcons have no chance to win that is the best situation possible, he will be playing with zero pressure and if he wins a few he will be a hero, if he loses the team is rebuilding anyway. It is win-win for Ryan and the Falcons.

Your brain needs to gel with your fingers so you can stop putting so much brain lekage on this TD.

They seemed a bit trigger happy on there decision

I agree^^^^

I think if the Falcons want any hope of playoff year, their only option would be Ryan.

"Throwing a rookie QB into the fire doest normally work out that well, look at David Carr, Joey Harrington and many more. "

John Elway. Troy Aikman. Peyton Manning. Ben Roethlisberger. All started beginning their rookie year or shortly thereafter. Carr and Harrington simply weren't good enough QB's to make it as the stars they were projected to be. You can't blame them busting because they were immediate starters. Even after years of experience they aren't much better than they were then.

When a player is taken that high and paid that much money you'd better get him on the field ASAP. If he's not mentally prepared to handle it, taking him that high was a mistake to begin with. Far as I'm concerned any player taken in the top 10 and paid that kind of up front cash BETTER be able to start at his position immediately, else it was a wasted pick because the money could have been spent on a starter or two. If you want a player to groom, take him later in the draft. It's not like the talent isn't there later, if you are willing to spend time grooming a player. Brady was a 6th rounder. Romo and Warner weren't drafted at all. Montana and Young were both 3rd rounders. Staubach was drafted in the 16th round of the AFL draft and the 10th round of the NFL draft. I could go on for 3 comments, here.

Yes, it is a good thing he's starting.
They have an easy enough schedule without ANY playoff pressure... they could win 4 games & it would be a successful season.

I bet Brady Quinn is jealous

Matt Ryan...B-B-B-BUST!

August 26, 2008  08:35 AM ET

Actually Guru, it is different.......He have 7-8 more weeks of practice prep that will give him a better understanding of a complex pro offense......

August 26, 2008  11:04 AM ET

He should start..Why not?

August 30, 2008  07:45 AM ET

This is terrible

They might go 2-14 now instead of 4-12 or 5-11 like I thought

Ryan needed 7-8 weeks to be mentored by Redman in the offense before thrown to the Wolves

I have shades of Manning's rookie year flashing before my eyes (not comparing him to Manning, just being thrown into the fire immediately)
