The NFL has seen a remarkable amount of horrible football played this preseason. I realize teams have players to look through and kinks to work out.
Fans on the other hand still have to pay top dollar to witness these games. It is forced upon season ticket holders as part of the package. Yet unless it is week 3 of the preseason (dress rehearsel for most) they barely even get a glimpse of the key players and head for the gates at halftime.
A 2 game preseason is already becoming an option that the commish is looking into. I say it is a good option for the NFL, its fans and its players (Osi). The fans want to get what they pay for, which is a top notch football game. The top players have almost no interest in playing these games. Injuries are a part of the game, but no one wants to lose there premier pass rusher in a preseason game. Their is also reason to believe the injuries come, because these guys are disinterested and not giving it there all.
Let the players prove what they have at camp. Give them a game or two to show what they have on the field. You only get one chance during the regular season to prove your worth. Why do you need four preseason games to earn a shot?
The Ram said 08/25, 09:31 AM
4 games.
Preseason games aren't for the fans. They're not for you to see a "competitive game."
They serve two purposes:
1. Get the starters reps.
2. Evaluate draft picks and undrafted free agents/grocery baggers.
You want 2 preseason games where the starters play the majority? That leaves about 50 players of the 80 man roster with NO legitimate chance to prove they belong in the NFL. How many pretty practice players, who suck in real games, would make rosters over players like Kurt Warner who needed to shine in preseason games to make the squad?
Fluke injuries happen in all aspects of life: car accidents (Zach Thomas), Falling down stairs (Brian Griese), carjackings (Jerome McDougle). Osi could have been hurt chasing an ice cream truck, or gotten attacked by a teammate (ala Steve Smith) or freakin McDonald's bag (Brandon Marshall). That injury would have happened had the team just held a live practice instead.
Now, your main point is that fans pay full price to see competitive games and starters, right?
My answer: The games don't count, so they'll never be competitive and the number of games isn't your gripe, the owners charging full price is.

If the league were to go down to 2 games, the majority of teams would limit the starters to the one half of football that they actually try in anyways.
As a Cowboys fan, I can tell you the starters have looked totally disinterested in every moment they played other than the first half against the Texans.
Every team has different needs but practice is your chance to work out kinks. Are you really gonna work out kinks against the Chargers when they bench 14 starters before the game starts.
These teams already hold practice with one another, which is just another step towards getting rid of unnecesary games.
Why does a kid need 3 chances to earn a roster spot. In a game you get one chance to prove you can make a play. Don't you want a guy who will make a play the first time, not the third.
As for the fluke injury, a professional athlete has no business playing in a game at half speed against other athletes. When you get guys of that magnitude in a game they have no interest in, you run into injuries that CAN be avoided.
Plenty of good players end up on the scrape heap even after all that evaluation. Teams over think after 4 games, mistakes will be made regardless.
The Ram said 08/26, 08:15 AM
You only get one chance in the regular season?
Really???
Then you have GOT to explain to me how Matt Leinart still has a job. Or Alex Smith. Kyle Boller? Rex Grossman? Troy Williamson? Matt Jones? Pretty sure I've seen all of them suck more than once. Isn't J.T. O'Sullivan on his seventh team? By your logic, does that mean he should play 7 preseason games?
The idea that you only need one chance to make a play is absurd. Why play two games? We only need about 3 or 4 plays! Send the third team D out, whoever makes a tackle is on the team everyone else is cut (they should have made the most of their opportunity). Repeat until you have a 53 man roster.
"Their is also reason to believe the injuries come, because these guys are disinterested"
Kindly show me ONE, just ONE injury that happened this preseason because of "disinterest."
Funny. I didn't see "disinterest" run out of the stands and whack Osi in the knee. Why don't you blame Karma? The alignment of the stars? Or Bigfoot?
He was rushing the passer and tripped. That's something that would happen on a practice field just as often as in a game. His level of interest could not be more irrelevant.

"Matt Leinart still has a job. Or Alex Smith. Kyle Boller? Rex Grossman? Troy Williamson? Matt Jones?"
Interesting point. Too bad the NFL is all about money. Everyone of those players was drafted in the first round. I didn't see you list a bunch of rookie free agents for a reason
Which brings up another point, how many roster spots do the coaches really have to evaluate for. No owner will allow some first round pick to walk the street until they are 100% sure of there talent
"Kurt Warner who needed to shine in preseason games to make the squad?"
For every Kurt their is 5 Charlie Frye's. Guys who earn a job, just to suck when the real competition comes. Evaluating talent in the NFL is an inexact science and the fact is we will see a 2 game preseason SOON
How come college kids don't need 4 exhibition games to be prepared? Don't tell me the early games don't matter. Would OSU and USC scedule each other early if they thought they wouldn't be ready?
If you think these guys really care about these games, you are sorely mistaken. Disinterest, boredom, playing against SD's backups. These things can lead to injury. Great athletes need to play at a high level, they aren't
The Ram said 08/27, 09:24 AM
"Everyone of those players was drafted in the first round."
Uh...JT O'Sullivan? You want low picks. Fine. Derek Anderson, Terrell Davis, Ryan Grant, Ahmad Bradshaw, etc.
"Disinterest, boredom, playing against SD's backups. These things can lead to injury."
Couldn't come up with even one example, could you?
Now, people running slower and not hitting as hard are more likely to get hurt? You really think that?
Colleges don't need to evaluate the talent at the bottom of their rosters. They can keep 85 Scholarship athletes and as many walk-ons as they want. And STILL the vast majority of BCS schools schedule patsies before their Conference schedule. It's a de facto preseason.
You want entertainment as a fan? Then you should want your squad to be as strong as possible from top to bottom. You never know when that bottom of the barrel pick may be counted on to play a key role for your team. Without a full preseason to showcase what they can do there are a lot players that would get left by the wayside.
Think the Hoodie and fans of the Pats are glad there were 4 games to evaluate whether or not to keep that 6th round scrub QB from Michigan on the squad?

Well. I guess you'll just have to vote on the argument rather than the number we picked. Sorry, rstowe. I know that goes against every fiber of your being.

I like, we need the first few to settle out the deep depth chart and evaluate chance players, then we need the 3rd and last to get players up to speed, think about it in NCAA were fixing to see bama/clemson and tn/ucla without the players truly even making a tackle with the intent to hurt, they arent up to speed and who knows what well get, hence a TN blowout over cal 1 yr and a favor return the next, it has nothing to do with the better football team it has to do with who really was polished when they have no real situation to base it on

And 8 minutes 29.733552923255 seconds into the first quarter of the fourth preseason game the ref blows the whistle and everyone marches off the field. The coach of the team down 3-0 protests insisting that he stopped the game a pico-second early.

I'm all for the orginal 4 to stay. They are for the coaches to evaluate talent. But no way should the NFL charge full price. But, if the fans are willing to pay full price for them, then who's to blame, the fan or the NFL? Don't buy the tickets.
