With Osi done, they need to man up and offer Strahan a contract since Tuck is the only DE they have that is worth anything......They went from a 3 man rotation with Strahan's retirement and Osi's injury to a depleted DE position.......
With the loss of Strahan, LB Kawika Mitchell and S Gibril Wilson I was already pondering a possible 6-10 or 7-9 season as they encounter a SB hangover like some teams do the year after winning it all......
Then they traded a key player in the reg season in Jeremy Shockey.......
Now its looking grim since most NFL fans know the Giants pass defense was good last year because of a fearsome pass rush, NOT A GREAT secondary........
Cowboys-Celtics-Chisox said 08/25, 05:54 PM
Strahan isn't the answer. Do you really think Osi getting hurt suddenly changes Strahan's decision to retire? Of course not.
Yes, there are reports out there that "unnamed sources" have claimed Strahan would come back for $8mil. A ridiculous sum to pay for a guy who has repeatedly said he is happy with retired life and has not wavered in his decision. If those reports are true, he's just taking advantage of the teams situation and holding them hostage for another big payday. Not the actions of a man whose heart is in playing again.
The Giants have other options, and enough depth that they don't have to be taken advantage of by an aging player who doesn't really want to play anymore. They've already moved Kiwanuka back to DE. While he's no Strahan, he's also no scrub. Mathias can handle the position quite well. How they replace him at LB might be an issue, but remember, this is a very deep team that thrived last year despite several injuries because they draft for depth.
The Giants have a few different options, but overpaying an out of shape Strahan who has been sipping Mai Tai's on various beaches around the world the last couple of months isn't the best of them.
djroxalot said 08/25, 06:04 PM
Why move a player from LB and deplete their LB corps when they can bring in a proven veteran like Strahan???? Kiwanuka had just 33 tackles and 4.5 sacks, are you comparing him to a healthy and motivated Strahan????
Strahan had 45 tackles, 12 assists and 9 sacks last year.......Can anyone question his heart for playing last year when he might have been the difference for that monster pass rush????
Tuck had 46 and 10 sacks
Osi had 41 and 13
Strahan can still play and they dont have to rob another position......People thought Strahan would be out of shape last year and he didnt play too shabbily at all.......
Cowboys-Celtics-Chisox said 08/25, 06:19 PM
Why are you comparing Kiwanuka's stats as a linebacker to Strahan's as a DE?
And why are you comparing stats of a player who only played in 10 games to one who played in all 16?
Neither makes any sense.
How about we compare apples to apples, instead?
As a rookie DE in 2006 Kiwanuka started just 9 games compared to Strahans 15 starts last year. In 2006 Mathias had 44 tackles from the position compared to Strahans 46 last year, despite much less playing time. He had just 4 sacks, but that is in only 9 starts. He also had two picks and two forced fumbles compared to none for Michael. Kiwanuka is NOT a huge dropoff from Strahan. He was moved to LB because of the depth NY had at DE last year. That depth has diminished so moving him back to DE makes sense.
You can't compare last year to this year where his shape is concerned. Last year was an entirely different situation as he was wavering on whether or not to retire but was keeping in top shape while weighing his options.
This year he was firm on the decision to hang them up and has spent the off season living the good life, not conditioning and working out. You really think an out of shape Strahan would be game ready in a week?
djroxalot said 08/26, 08:44 AM
Is Strahan bumbling around at an out of control 325-350 pounds lying on a beach like a beached whale?
Um, not exactly, he might be drinking and eating a little more but hey he is retired......Nothing a month worth of working out wouldnt work off......And I know we are less than 10 days away but he would be in shape by week 2 or 3.......
The Giants have concerns at LB......So why take away from a weak spot already when you can bring in somebody familiar with the schemes??? Even if you have to overpay a little......Happens all the time in sports, business as usual......
Kiwanuka is coming off a broken leg and there are concerns about that in it self.......
Mystery why the Giants let Kawika Mitchell walk when they were very weak at the LB position.......
Cowboys-Celtics-Chisox said 08/26, 05:38 PM
A month of working out takes them 3 games deep into the season, just to get into shape. And if it's that simple why do teams bother with annoying things like mandatory workouts, OTS's, mini camps, training camp, and pre-season games?
Even if Strahan or another DE is signed, Kiwanuka is going to remain at DE. The coaching staff has already made that decision. It's his natural position and where he is most equipped to help the team. He was ONLY moved to LB last year because Spagnuola wanted his best players on the field at the same time. He wasn't moved because they needed another LB.
The Giants are NOT weak at LB.
Danny Clark is a 9 year vet signed in the off season. He'll be taking over strong side LB with Gerris Wilkinson taking over on the weak side. With Spagnuola's schemes the Giants will be fine with this arrangement. They can grab another LB for depth purposes once cuts start.
Could Strahan help the Giants this year? Of course. Is he their best option at this point? No. Are they so desperate that they should give him the kings ransom of $8mil he wants? Absolutely not.
The man doesn't want to play.

He didn't retire because of money. He retired because he DOESN'T WANT TO PLAY anymore.

SB winning teams over the past decade don't normally experience the hangover quite like the losers do. But without Osi and without a good pass rush I coud see them like the Rams after they won the Super Bowl. They go 10-6, limping into the playoffs, and lose to the Saints in the wild card.

I know CCC. I was saying that if he decides to come back they should give him the money he wants.

No way. He's no where near ready to play, the season starts in a week and a half, his heart obviously isn't in it since he DID, in fact, retire and claims to be happy with retirement and his new job...and he wants $8mil to bribe him into doing something he doesn't want to do in the first place.

The Giants are still pretty solid up front. I dunno if the Giants "should" sign Strahan for the 8-12mil that is being reported as his desired salary. It sounds a little like a cap-hamstring move.

"Favre retired too, CCC "
What does Favre have to do with anything? Brett retired and changed his mind, decided he wanted to play. That is NOT the case with Strahan who RIGHT NOW is reportedly sitting on a beach in Greece. Strahan has said repeatedly he DOES NOT want to come back.

As I already pointed out, Kiwanuka had 4 sacks and 4 turnovers in just 9 starts two years ago at DE. 5 fewer sacks in 7 fewer games, BUT 4 more turnovers. What would you rather have...5 sacks or 4 turnovers? I'll take the turnovers every single time.

Best players on field would be Strahan at DE and Kiwanuka at LB

Is the gap in the Giants defense even wider than the gap in between Strahan's teeth?
