On the Site that Shall not be named

They have a Poll, and like Stowe Robert Menn at a Shriners Convention
they get a little stupid.

The Question

Who is the greatest in JETS history?

THIER Pick?

Joe Namath

I want ONE of the 56.5% (I know some of you visit both sites)
to DEFEND this MISTAKE

My Pick?

Don Maynard

You mean they didn't vote for Brett Favre? I'm shocked.

I'll defend Broadway Joe here.

Who was throwing those passes to Maynard? Maynard only once led the league in receiving yards while playing with Joe, but Joe three times led the league in passing yards while playing with Don. Obviously Maynard was only a part of Namath's success.

Joe Namath simultaneously put the New York Jets, the AFL, and Beauty Mist pantyhose on the map. I defy you to find a player from any team that can make the same claim. His diversity is remarkable.

Broadway Joe may or may not have been their best player, but he's certainly their most important and definitely the face of that franchise, whether he's predicting Super Bowl victories or asking Suzy Kolber for French lessons on national TV, Joe always has been and still is Mr. J-E-T.

Seems like we are back to the chicken or the egg arguement

But let me ask you this

Name me the best QBs of all time

I will wait for you to get to Joe.

Now Name me the Best Wideouts

I bet you will return a LOT quicker with Don this time.

Saldy your love of men in pantyhose is not a valid one to this discussion- this is about the best PLAYER not the most important- if we were going for most imfluential or most impacting - then Joe would be the RUNAWAY choice

but we are looking for the best player.

To most Joe is not even considered worthy of the Hall of Fame
Maynard is one of the FEW players in history that can look Jerry Rice in the eye and state "I was pretty good too. "

Don is NINTH STILL in Rec TDs
31st in Touchdowns PERIOD
44th in yards from scrimmage
38th in catches all time

and other than 6 catches for 102 yards with 2 other teams- that is ALL JET

Joe Namath? He is right now
17th in passes intercepted
Holds a 61-61-4 Win loss record as a Jet
and threw 45 more INTS than TDs

I think Joe is a Made Man by the DON

"Maynard is one of the FEW players in history that can look Jerry Rice in the eye and state "I was pretty good too. " "

Come on, now. Jerry Rice? Sure in 15 years Don compiled some numbers, but he was rarely the best receiver, let alone player, in any given year. He ONCE led the league in receiving yards, and once in receiving TD's. 4 pro bowls in 15 years? ONE first team all-pro selection. And you're going to put him in the same league as Rice with his 13 pro bowls and 10 1st team all pro selections?

Namath played 13 years, led the league in passing yards 3 times, selected to 5 pro bowls, was twice named AP player of the year, was a Super Bowl MVP, and even won an AP comeback player of the year award. Where he ranks on some all time QB list 35 years after his retirement doesn't change the fact that among his peers, he was certainly a much more celebrated player than Maynard was.

Namath retired in 1978 and was elected to the Hall in 1985, two years after he was first eligible. Maynard had a much harder time gaining entry, retiring in 1974 but not being elected until 1987. Apparently the HOF selectors disagree with your assessment of who does or doesn't belong.

Maynard: 48 catches 902 Yards 18.7 Yard/Rec 6.8 Tds per year

Rice: 73 catches 1090yards 14.8 Yard/rec 9.3 Tds per year

So compared to the GOAT of All-Time of the wideouts - He not exactly tugging on Supermans cape- but he;s not blinded by the Sun either

58.5 Catches 934 Yards 16.0 Yard/Rec 7.1 Tds per year
Vs
48 catches 902 Yards 18.7 Yard/Rec 6.8 Tds per year

That would be Maynard vs Largent

Stacks up pretty well vs one of the all time greats (and who might be Seattle's GOAT)

So yes I do think that Maynard was a Pretty Good WR-

Now Lets take Broadway Joe

He has a 500 W/L Record- I don;t care if its 35 years ago 70 years ago or 5 years ago- a 500 Record in ANY sport is not good

He threw 45 more picks than TDs

Brett gets ROASTED for throwing too many picks right now- and that keeps him off may peoples top 5 list

and he threw 154 MORE TouchDowns than INTS

Thats 9 more TDs than Ints each year

Only in TWO of his 12 years (plus his STL year by the way) did Joe throw more TDs Than INTs

As far as the Hall voting goes- Let me give you two names

Derrick Thomas
John Madden

Who is in the Hall?

Maynard being substantially worse than Rice and slightly worse than Largent has no bearing whatsoever on this TD. Last I looked neither of those guys played for the Jets.

What does Namath's W/L record have to do with anything. He's a QB not a MLB Pitcher. The Jets weren't a very good team for most of Broadways career. And Maynard was right there with him most of those games. What's HIS culpability?

Brett gets roasted for throwing too many INT's now because it's a different game at QB than it was back then. Now teams throw a lot more short, high % passes. That wasn't the case when Joe played and coaches weren't as concerned with interceptions. Terry Bradshaw threw just 2 more TD passes than INT's, for example.

None of that matters to this argument, either, however.

This is about the Jets.

Maynard was only once recognized as the best receiver in his own conference. Namath was twice recognized as the best PLAYER in the GAME.

Namath had more accomplishments and more accolades at his position that Maynard did at HIS. And their careers mostly overlapped.

Joe Namath is the most decorated, most accomplished player in franchise history.

Broadway Joe IS the greatest Jet.

NCshvDavid, are you going to do a Ravens one or is their choice to ridiculous?

August 27, 2008  07:42 PM ET

Brett Favre??

August 27, 2008  07:42 PM ET

JK

August 27, 2008  07:42 PM ET

Nope...the king of sack......"He made the defensive end position a glamorous position. You didn't get a sack and go back to the huddle. You got up and did that dance, the sack dance, the crazy man dance," says Giants defensive end Michael Strahan...No other then......Mark Gastineau.....the first player to record over 100 sacks if im correct

August 27, 2008  07:44 PM ET

Still David made a great pick, Maynard was a great receiver and was the one of the first of his kind..without him the Jets dont win Super Bowl three....david vs CCC...An epic in the making

August 27, 2008  08:29 PM ET

Will wait for all arguments on this one

August 27, 2008  08:54 PM ET

nice so far

August 27, 2008  08:59 PM ET

"You mean they didn't vote for Brett Favre? I'm shocked."

Haha, that's what I was thinkin too, CCC.

August 27, 2008  09:44 PM ET

Namath is one of the most overrated qbs of all time and there is now way he is the jets greatest player of all time.

Most famous? Probably but not the greatest

August 27, 2008  10:25 PM ET

I will wait for all the arguments of course but if I voted on that poll or whatever it was I wouldnt have picked Joe

Coming from a shemale I take that as a compliment.

August 27, 2008  11:47 PM ET

How does NC even have a vote. CCC knocked it out of the park and his pick is correct. The question isn't whether Broadway Joe is best QB it is best Jet and that is yes.

August 28, 2008  02:09 PM ET

How can you vote against Beauty Mist pantyhose?

August 28, 2008  03:18 PM ET

First:

Slim pickins with the Jets. It's not like this team has a revolving door at the hall of fame.

Second:

QB's are often given the benefit of the doubt in situations as such.

Third....I have to give the edge to CCC here. Defended Namath well and in relation to the team he's on. Good stuff.

Wow. This is bad now. Almost sad, but B looks better.

Anyway, I mentioned to, um, her - that the best course of action would be to take a 2 month sabbatical of sorts from the site and then come back to things and see if the hate calmed down. It's moot, because regardless of what would disappear, you would still have a user who berates and belittles opponents and voters for analyzing arguments as they see fit. I've drawn the ire of Cassidy numerous times, and it's like I'm dealing with a teenage daughter.

Sad, bad, whatever it may be: I love how I got deleted off the friends list. Thats amusing stuff.

"I love how I got deleted off the friends list. Thats amusing stuff."

That friends list is gold to Cassiroy. (S)he jumps all over people who refuse her invitation or who don't invite him. Literally basing votes in TD's on that alone. Then wonders why nobody takes her seriously. Well, that and the fact that I just referred to this person as a (s)he, a her, and a he all in the same sentence and nobody find that the least bit odd. ;-)
