The Ravens need to start the QB that gives them the best chance to win, and that is Troy Smith.
Boller, although he was highly touted coming into the league, has never panned out and has been a terrible QB, and you know what you have with him.
Flacco has the potential to be very good, but just a year ago he was prepping with Delaware for a D 1-AA schedule. The jump from D-1 is hard enough, and it'd be even harder for a D 1-AA player. He needs to sit and learn for at least a year.
Smith, while no one ever gave him much of a chance, is a very, very good QB. He was very efficient in Baltimore's last 2 games last year, and was a terrific college QB. He brings superb mobility, leadership, and accuracy to the position, and while he's only 6' 1", other QB's (Drew Brees) have shown that you can overcome height and play quarterback.
Boller's shown that he's terrible and Flacco's much too inexperienced. Smith has shown at Ohio State and in limited time as a rookie last year, that he's a terrific Quarterback. He is the best choice for the Ravens.

Actually last year Bollrt showed quite a bit of improvement.....He has always had a rocket arm but very inaccurate......Last year he completed 61.1% of his passes for 1,743 yards and 9 TD's to 10 INT's......
Is he the future???
No
But he gives them a better chance to win (lol at the Ravens winning much) now than Troy Smith who would be getting his first major playing time......
"Boller's shown that he's terrible and Flacco's much too inexperienced. Smith has shown at Ohio State and in limited time as a rookie last year, that he's a terrific Quarterback. He is the best choice for the Ravens."
Boller isnt terrible by any stretch of the imagination.......
Charlie Frye
Ken Dorsey
Jared Lorenzen
AJ Feeley
Alex Smith
Bruce Gradkowski
are terrible
Also Smith has just 2 more games than Flacco so he isnt exactly a seasoned veteran......Smith is a project and his future is in doubt with the drafting of Flacco.......
Shake_N_Bake said 08/28, 11:01 PM
Oh yeah, 9 TD's and 10 picks for a vet sounds terrific. He gives you a terrible chance at winning now, the future, and doesn't help you get better going forward.
Troy Smith is a very capable, young QB, only in his 2nd year. Why give yet another oppurtunity to a crappy quarterback in Boller when you know what he's going to give you? Why not give it to the accurate, mobile, young Troy Smith?
Smith played well last year, leading the Ravens to 2 wins at the end of last year, and was very efficient and ran the ball exceptionally well for a rookie. He brings another element to the offense with his legs, and doesn't make many mistakes.
This is exactly what the Ravens need with their Defense. They need a QB who will manage the game and minimize his mistakes, but who still can change a game with either his arm or his legs.
Boller's been given ample oppurtunities, and has blown them all and Flacco needs to sit before he becomes an NFL QB. Troy Smith is definetly the QB the Ravens need to start this year.
djroxalot said 08/29, 11:23 AM
Never said Boller was a Pro Bowler but he showed strides last year by increasing his percentage from 55.8% in his first 4 seasons to 61.1% last year.......He also averaged a career high 8.8 yards per attempt
He only played 12 games last year......
Saying Troy Smith is the answer is like saying Aaron Rodgers is the answer......Rodgers has played in 1 meaningful game and played against a Cowboys defense that was playing prevent defense because they were ahead of the Packers by a healthy margin.......
Smith has played 2 games and they werent both wins......
Last year the Ravens lost 9 in a row before ending the season with a win against Pitt who was resting their starters.......
Smith tries to force passes because of his short stature......Baltimore has to implement more roll outs with him because he has trouble seeing over his OL.......And that is a big reason why he only completed 52.6% of his passes last year......
So why start Boller????
Maybe because he will complete a higher percentage of his passes and that is key in keeping the chains moving.......And he has shown he can movee the ball......
Shake_N_Bake said 08/29, 12:50 PM
I am not saying Troy Smith is THE answer, but he is the best fit to quarterback the Ravens right now. His teammates love him because of his leadership qualities, and he inspires confidence in the huddle. He's a natural leader, something the Ravens lacked without Steve McNair last year on the offensive side of the ball.
Ok, you've got 2 QB's. Quarterback A was a highly touted 1st round pick, and has been in the league 5 years, but has thrown only 45 TD's compared to 44 picks in his career. QB B was a Heisman Trophy winner, and threw only 13 picks in 2 1/2 years as a college starter, and threw 0 INT's as a rookie last year.
Now, do you take the young quarterback with a ton of upside, leadership, and mobility, or do you take the QB who's been given 5 years and still sucks? To me, thats a no brainer.
Yes, Smith is only 6'1", but there have been QB's to over come that (Drew Brees, Doug Flutie.) And if Smith forces passes because of his height, why was he able to keep from throwing an INT last year?
Bottom line, you know what you have with Boller, and its not very good. Smith is a young talented QB, so why not give him a chance?
djroxalot said 08/30, 07:39 AM
Because in the NFL, its a win NOW League. With Smith (although he might have some upside) an NFL team will be taking their lumps while he learns on the job.

13 INT's in college means squat since NFL is a lot faster pace than college ball. Smith has had 76 attempts to throw a pick.

1-Smith is 6-feet even.
2-Completed 52.6% of his passes last year because of his height. He has to go get a step ladder to see over his OL.
3-He played 2 games last year. Give him more time and he will throw more INT's than Vince Young. Young has encountered a bag of mixed results as an NFL starter and he is a more talented overall player than Smith.

Actually voting for Troy Smith. Boller has had his chance. Plus, he just injured his shoulder. He isn't going to get surgery but considering that if he did he would be out for the season should indicate the severity of his situation.

Boller gives them better chance today, but Smith could possibly be their future. Holding vote for now.

You really believe that? I got a bridge to sell you if you do. You know what you get with Boller...a loser. I'd go with Snith, he really cant be any worse.

Smith could be worse
5 TD's and 12-14 INT's
He is nowhere close to VY in talent level and is much shorter

Smith is a major project, Boller played well when given time last year......He increased his completion % and ran the offense efficiently enough where they almost ruined the Pats perfect season......
Smith played at end of the season when teams were resting people and he still completed just 52%

With Smith, the Ravens go 3-13, maybe 4-12
With Boller once he gets healthy, they get 6-10 or 7-9 until eliminated and then Flacco plays last 3-4 games

If my team is going to have a losing season anyway, why not have some new blood in there and see what you have on the depth chart? 3 or 4 wins will get you a much higher draft choice. 6 or 7 wins gets you middle of the first round. Like I said, if you're going to lose anyway......
