Well we desperatley need to get teams out of the Sun Belt and South desperatly(except for Dallas of course). So here are 3 Cities that sould make sense if the NHL decides to relocate/expand
1. Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada
Well the last time we saw the NHL play in Winnipeg was back in the 90s when they had an inadequete facility and the owners wanted to move to the new frontier of Phoneix Arizona and gamble that there was enough senior citizens there from Canada that they could fill the joint. Well we know how that worked and now Winnipeg has built a new arena(the MTS Centre) and has grown in population, we know the citizens of that fine prairie town wantsw there team back, we should give it to them.
2. Quebec City, Canada
Well yet another Canadian team that relocated in the 90's. This fine Quebec town supported the IIHF World Champions this year and even the games without the prescence of Canada sold greatly. The Le Collise is still in great shape and they as well have a great fan bas as the Francophones love their hockiey and most dispise the historicly Anglophone Canadiens from Montreal.
3. Las Vegas, Nevada
Continued in second arguement

1. Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada
Agreed.
3. Las Vegas, Nevada
Agreed.
Now . . .
2. Windsor, Ontario, Canada
Them instead of Quebec City, my one problem with Quebec City is that it would be the most most inconvenient location if the NHL decided to create a team there. It would be the furthest north city in the league and one of the furthest east. With teams out west and down south, most teams visiting Quebec City would be traveling for a while.
Windsor is in a great location, right next to Detroit. Windsor already has a OHL team that was tied for third in the Ontario Hockey League in points. The Windsor Spitfires have a big fan base, just imagine if they had a NHL team to cheer for.
Windsor is in love with it's hockey and has plenty of big ice rinks around to carry an NHL team. When you have a city with such a big hcoky following, it has to be one of the cities that you think about when you are finding a place to have a new NHL team.
thebasketballguru said 08/28, 11:20 PM
So it is Windsor vs. Quebec
Here is the main problem with a team in Windsor:
There are teams in Toronto, Ottawa, and Detroit, so I do not see those three teams being pleased with that idea.
If you move a third team to Ontario, which never should happen by the way, it should be in Hamilton, they have Copps Colosieum and they have an owner in place who wants a team there. The guy CEO of Blackberry wants to move a team there.
Quebec City seems like the best option if they relocate two teams to Canada. The built in rivalry with Montreal is a bonus, plus they will have those killer powder blue jerseys that everyone would love.
If they find a way to make Vancouver to travel to Florida I am pretty sure the schedule makers will accomadate with Quebec City, maybe a Eastern Canada swing of Winnipeg, Ottawa, Montreal, and Toronto, extending to about a week in a half?
Windsor is just to close to 3 very popular NHL teams, I am sorry Windsor residents, but you will likely always have to travel to Detroit for your NHL fix.
Detroit Steel said 08/29, 08:23 PM
Sorry, but Detroit isn't in Ontario if that is what you were going after.
The rivalry of Quebec City and Montreal is long over. We are going back about 20 years. They haven't played at all since then.
Windsor will have a rivalry with the Canadian teams as much as any teams will.
The trips to Canada from Quebec City isn't what would worry the NHL. It is those trips out to California, Arizona, Texas, Colorado . . . the schedule makers could have a problem with that.
Windsor could have a name like the Windsor Casinos or the Windsor Jackpots (I'm not good with the names). It could make some creative names out of the casinos at that place or maybe something about the river. I don't know, there is a few things.
There are a ton of MLB teams in California, there are quite a few NBA teams in Texas, I don't see why there can't be 3 teams in Ontario.
Windsor people aren't happy with having the Red Wings as their team - they have a major hockey fan base, and they can put butts in the seats. Quebec City isn't a great location.
thebasketballguru said 08/29, 08:44 PM
Windsor is not a great location for a NHL team either.
Think of it this way.
If there are 3 teams making serious dough in one general area of North America, why dilute the market with another team? I am sure Windsor loves hockey and the Spitfires are one of the biggest draws in the OHL, but is an OHL arena really up to NHL standards?
Le Collise was the home of the original Nordiques and just hosted the IIHF World Hockey Championships, one of the most succesful tourneys to date and they filled the seats.
Also Quebec City has a long hockey history and bad management was the downfall of the franchise not putting buts in the seats. I am fairly sure if Quebec City got its team back they would support it even more than the last reincarnation. There should be at least two teams in Quebec as there is two in Alberta and Ontario already.
Windsor is a great place for minor hockey and I am sure they love the sport and dream of an NHL team but they are behind such cites or states as:
Washington(state) or Oregon
Wisconsin
Hamilton, Ontario
and other pipe dreams
They are definitley not in the top 3 cities that make sense, but they are in the top 10 for sure.

I dont know about Portland... I can't really see them being hockey fans.... I would try a team in North Dakota or Maine possibly... somwhere north where hockey's a passion.... Hell even try Alaska.... Mystery Alaska worked why can't an NHL team?

Alaska would be a pain for the NHL schedule makers to make a team work in Alaska, I do not see that happening

I love the Vegas pick.
If they can sell out 5 Cirque du Soleil shows a night, then a pro franchise in town could do great. Loads of Canadian and European tourists in town all the time (not to mention tourists from northern hockey cities around the U.S.). Tons of marketing potential.

A big problem would be season ticket sales. You need a loyal fan base to be successful.

The answer is easily NOBODY. The league is diluted enuf

Great_1, you couldn't say that it would be bad for business to put a team in Winnipeg or Quebec City.

The Vegas corporations and hotels could buy up 15000 season tickets easily...Good comps give out to guests.
Also, don't forget about the convention crowd. Vegas hosts some of the biggest conventions in the U.S. You've got sh**Tloads of sales people that want to schmooze clients.
Eventually a local base could come along. It's the fastest growing city in the U.S. Over 2 million residents now.

It could work, but it's a big risk. I really don't like the Windsor pick.

The Leafs would never allow it. But the corporations and fans would support 2 teams in Toronto. The St. Pats & The Maple Leafs.

But based on population, Hamilton is a good choice after Quebec City.
