I say yes.

Moose currently has 266 wins, leaving him 34 away. He is currently 39 years old, which doesn't give him a lot of time time left. At this beginning of this season he was written off as being washed up and done. However, with a sudden turn around, he has been able to win 16 games already this year and is looking to have his first 20 win season.

With his turn around i think he can get to 300. By the end of this year, he will need about 28-32 wins to get there. I believe that within the next 2-3 year, if he stays healthy, he can eclipse the 300 mark and get even more after that.

Disagree????

Nope.

Think about this rationally and not as someone impressed with Mike's current run of success.

This time last year he was BENCHED for SUCKING.

Moose is a streaky pitcher who is going through a good streak right now. The man is older than I am. I saw man land on the moon when I was two months old...he REMEMBERS it.

My best guess is the Yankees let him go after this year. Then what? What contender is going to sign a 40-something streaky pitcher to a long term contract? He's going to need, at least, 3 more years to get there on a GOOD team that can give him a lot of run support.

OK, Detroit might be dumb enough. If they are I concede he'll get to 300 in 2012. Outside of that, not likely.

Yes, last yr he was benched for sucking...however he still managed to pick up 11 wins in 27 starts which isn't terrible.

It doesn't hav to be a contender that signs him. Even though I think the Yanks will bring him back, I'm sure lots of guys will be interested in him. So far this year he has been MVP for the Yanks. Lots of teams, either contenders or rebuilders, would love to have him on their staff. He gives the team a chance to win every time he pitches and is also a great mentor to younger pitchers.

He is the type of pitcher who can pitch into his 40s. Take Glavine and Moyer as example. Moose is just like them. All three have never had that overpowering 97 mph fastball. Instead they rely on pinpoint control and an assortment of pitches. This year Mussina has only walked 23 in 166.1 IPs. Thats how you win games, throw strikes and make the hitters beat you, which they havnt been able to do against Mussina this year.

If you figure he finished with about 270 wins, theres no way it will take him more then 3 years to get to 300. Even in his worst year of his career last year he still had 11 wins. He's good for around 15 wins next year and maybe even the next year.

Glavine and Moyer are exceptions, not the rule. And even Glavine only won 30 games in the 3 years after the age Moose is, now. Mussina is having a great year, but 40 year old bodies don't bounce back quite the same as 30 year old bodies.

I don't see any way the Yankees will re-sign him. There are going to be a ton of pitchers on the F.A. market this year. One of the Yankees biggest problems is they are OLD. Will some team sign him? Of course. Will it be a team that will give him the kind of run support the Yankees give him? Not likely.

Not sure where you are getting the arbitrary 15 wins next year, at age 40, from. He's only reached that number twice since he was 34 years old, including this season which has been an aberration, not a rule.

Moose is looking at a -minimum- of 3 years more years of being fairly productive to reach 300. How much is he going to demand in free agency? Does he even want to play another 3 years? There are a lot of variables in play here

Age and time are not on his side, even with the good season he's having his velocity is down, he can't take Clemens little helper, and was showing serious signs of decline just a year ago. Another 3 years is too much

I think that he really wants to play a few more years to get to 300. This is a huge milestone and will most likely get him into the hall of fame. Besides some team whether it be the Yankees or not, are gonna open up their wallets for a solid 3 year contract for the guy.

Despite his up and down yrs over the past few years, one thigng has stayed consistent...his control. Here are his walks per year since joining the Yankees starting in 2001: 42, 48, 40, 40, 47, 35, 35, 23. This proves that he has been pretty consistent over the past few years. He makes the hitters beat him, he doesn't often allow himself to beat him.

Even if the Yanks deside to let him go, which is always a possibility, there are a bunch of teams who would express great interest. One team that comes to mind is the Texas Rangers. This team leads the league in runs but is worse in ERA. If they could sign a veteran like Mussina to not only help their staff, but also to teach and mentor their young pitchers, it could make a big difference

I think if he stays with the Yanks he can win 15 next yr, which would only leave about 15 more to get there. If he hangs around for 3 more years he can definetly get 300 wins

5.68, 5.56, 5.78, 5.85, 5.38

Those are the average runs scored by the Yankees in games Mussina has started each of the last 5 years. More than a full run above league average every year. Even so, he has still only surpassed 15 wins in two of those 5 years.

Not many teams out there can deliver that kind of run support.

With the likes of Sabathia, and Burnett, and Sheets available in free agency, Moose isn't going to be a priority signing for the Yankees.

It's fantastic that Mike only walked 35 last year. Of course, hitters were too busy teeing off on him to take a walk. 188 hits allowed in 152 innings. His ERA has been 4.40+ in 3 of the last 4 years. He's given up more hits than IP in 4 of the last 5.

You want to send him to Texas? There is a reason the Rangers lead the league in runs but are last in pitching. That ball park is where pitchers go to die. A contact pitcher with declining velocity like Mussina would get killed playing half his games in that park.

And once again he's hitting that threshold where pitchers rarely excel. The dreaded 40th birthday. To expect a pitcher with declining velocity to remain productive for another 3 seasons at that age isn't reasonable

Damn, CCC, you aren't taking any prisoners tonight.

August 29, 2008  03:50 AM ET

Nope. Going straight for the kill shot. Lol.

August 29, 2008  04:44 AM ET

I hope he does. He's so underrated. His consistancy is amazing. He played with Scott Erikson in Baltimore. It seems like an eternity since he left the game. Yet The Moose keeps going. I say yes. He's not a power pitcher. Could play as long as Phil Niekro.

August 29, 2008  04:51 AM ET

"Could play as long as Phil Niekro."

Uh, no. Niekro featured a knuckle ball. You kinda last a LOT LONGER with that pitch.

August 29, 2008  04:52 AM ET

I don't see Moose adopting a floater anytime soon.

August 29, 2008  04:55 AM ET

Sorry. I was thinking of Tim Wakefield!

August 29, 2008  04:58 AM ET

Wakefield plays for the Red Sox, not the Yankees. You just pissed off a WHOLE BUNCH of people with that one. ;-)

August 29, 2008  05:01 AM ET

Terrific.

August 29, 2008  05:08 AM ET

It's all good. Just hurry and start a TD that Tim Wakefield will win 300...I promise I won't take it {fingers crossed behind back}

August 29, 2008  05:36 AM ET

Doesn't matter either way CCC and Shamrock. Neikro and Wakefield are knucklball pitchers and Moose isn't so he won't last near as long Phil did and hell I'm not sure about it but he is probably already older than Wakefield.

Read it again, Wildbill.

August 29, 2008  05:49 AM ET

You just said what I already said, but in a different way.

August 29, 2008  05:51 AM ET

My bad.

August 29, 2008  05:58 AM ET

Oh well. Since it appears neither of the people I accepted are going to argue tonight, I'm off to bed.

August 29, 2008  06:39 AM ET

Damn, CCC, you aren't taking any prisoners tonight.

Could it be... Toucan...?

August 29, 2008  06:43 AM ET

I got my wires crossed. I didn't mean to introduce knuckleballers.

August 29, 2008  07:09 AM ET

CCC fantastic arguing man. I like it a lot

August 29, 2008  07:12 AM ET

If the Yanks let him go, the Rays could sign him. Keeping him in the division.

August 29, 2008  07:51 AM ET

Probally stay until 42..43.. so yes.. it will happen.. but will be very close

August 29, 2008  08:40 AM ET

not a chance at 300
