On the Site that Shall not be named

They have a Poll, and like Robert Menn finding a poster of 300 and jar of Welchs Grape Jelly - they get a little Crazy

The Question

Who is the greatest in Colts history?

THIER Pick?

Peyton Manning

I want ONE of the 59.0 % (I know some of you visit both sites)
to DEFEND this MISTAKE

My Pick?

Unitas

Johnny Unitas- 17 years with the "Baltimore" Colts
39,768 passing yards, 54.7 completion percentage, 287 touchdowns, 4.8 interception percentage, 193 yards per game, 3x AP NFL MVP, 10x Pro Bowl, 9x All-Pro, 3x Pro Bowl MVP

Peyton Manning- 10 years with the Indianapolis Colts
41,626 passing yards, 64.2 completion percentage, 306 touchdowns, 2.9 interception percentage, 260.2 yards per game, 2x AP NFL MVP, 8x Pro Bowl, 6x All-Pro, Pro Bowl MVP, Super Bowl MVP

There are only a few things that Manning hasn't accomplished that Unitas did.

Unitas may have two more Pro Bowl MVP awards, three more All-Pro selections, and another AP NFL MVP award, but Manning has a Super Bowl MVP award.

I know when I say that it seems like Unitas has accomplished so much more. But in reality he really hasn't.

Manning leads Unitas in about all the major offensive categories. Oh, by the way, he has played seven less seasons.

Peyton is overshadowed in a time when Tom Brady has won 3 Super Bowls.

Thats all you got a Super Bowl MVP?

I guess Marino stinks in your Mind huh- and lets not even get into the fact that he SHOULD NOT HAVE WON that MVP Award- that was about as Earned as Larry Browns was- everyone KNOWS Neil should have won that one.

Manning leads Unitas in about all the major offensive categories. Oh, by the way, he has played seven less seasons.

oh by the way

1- Less GAMES back then- 12 Games per year when Unitas started
2 - A LOT easier rules now- The Push Off, the VERY liberal O-Lineman holding and the no-stickum by the D-Backs

3. a LOT less TEAMS then- when Unitas tried to dump over a corner- he was trying over a top 12 CB and a top 12 SS AT WORST

Peyton is looking at a top 32 Corner and a top 32 SS

Little bit easier.

and as far as the Post season awards are concerned- who is Payton beating out? Carson Palmer and Big Ben?

in 1957 (just going with the year ending in 7) there are 5 QBs in a 12 team NFL league that are in the Hall of Fame (and the 6th was some Scrub named Y.A. Tittle)

5 of 12- not a bad ratio- Do you see 5 starting Qbs in 2007 going to the hall? or to keep the same ratio FOURTEEN???

Why would you think I said that's his only advantage?

Alex Rodriguez has never won a World Series, is he a bad player? No.

Does it help in some sense? Of course.

I pointed out that Manning had won a Super Bowl MVP and Unitas didn't. That is surely not the only thing I pointed out, though.

The season length is a moot point. Unitas still played in 46 more games than Manning as a Colts player. It isn't like they were 6-8 game seasons and they've played the same amount of games. Still 46 more for Unitas.

So you're just trying to get the point across that there was stronger competition when Unitas was playing? While that's partly true, it isn't fully true.

Look at the competition among Quarterback's in our time. Seven Quarterback's had over 4,000 passing yards.

Are we in a more offensive heavy time? Of course, I'm not saying we aren't.

But that still doesn't change that Manning leads in about all the offensive categories over 46 less games. Again, this is 46 games, not about 10-20. Not even 30.

Think about completion percentage for a minute. Defenses aren't bad enough now to say that Unitas' 54.7 is what Manning's 64.2 would equal now. That's a big difference.

Games during the year DOES matter

Say the PRIME is 5 years- If you play a 12 game season vs a player that plays 16 geams- then Todays player has 20 MORE games in the Prime - over a SEASON more at that age range.

not to mention the bye week of rest- or does that not matter either.

You bring up 46 like you are Buddy Ryan- lets also add in that was over SEVEN more YEARS playing - so that should tell you how those 46 games went- Peyton in seven years will be 38 - how will he hold up??

Look at the competition among Quarterback's in our time. Seven Quarterback's had over 4,000 passing yards.

WONDERFUL point

1958 - the LEADING TEAM had 2752 yards-
1968 - the LEADING TEAM had 3026 yards-
1973 - the LEADING TEAM had 2998 Yards (unitas last year)

Love the stat- thank you- Last year the NINERS had 2320 yards- that would have been 8th of the 26 teams in Unitas' last year in the NFL

You wanna talk again about how much HARDER it is for a QB in todays NFL? ALEX SMITH would have directed the 8th best Offense in the NFL

Let me try something...

Can you try and close the tag next time? It makes everything italic because you forgot to close your tag. Hopefully that fixes it.

Does any of this take away from what Peyton Manning has done? In a tougher NFL, Manning led his team to the Super Bowl and an MVP award.

Now, let me bring this up. I already stated that it said "Baltimore". Did "SportNation" include both Baltimore and Indianapolis? If not, Manning is clearly the Indianapolis Colts best player. Something to think about.

If you put Manning back in the 50's and 60's, you don't know how he would perform. Just like you don't know how Unitas would perform in the 2000's.

You seem to be ignoring the completion percentage though. That's a big factor. It can really help with telling if you're an efficient Quarterback. Forgot about the era's, if you aren't completing passes then, you aren't completing passes now.

Unitas' 54.7% really isn't good.

If you look ahead seven years from now or so, Manning will have shattered every statistic Unitas has over him. Oh wait, had... Manning has already passed him in just about everything.

Good luck, David. Should be a good one.

September 1, 2008  08:17 PM ET

This isnt even close to close to close to being close to close.

Basically, Unitas is on a whole nother LEVEL than Manning is at. MAYBE... MAYBE when Manning retires he will pass Johnny U but as of now its clear cut Unitas and I really do like Manning.

September 1, 2008  08:20 PM ET

So, the statistics lie?

September 1, 2008  08:24 PM ET

you have to consider eras when comparing statistics.

September 1, 2008  08:29 PM ET

Finally.

September 1, 2008  08:31 PM ET

Of COURSE the stats lie! Manning isn't near Unitas. Johnny was the first big stat QB.

September 1, 2008  08:31 PM ET

If you want to talk about games, Unitas has still played in 46 more games than Manning.

FnFGroupie... finally a loss? I told you, my goal isn't to be undefeated. My goal is to give my best in every Throwdown I participate in and to not take anything for granted.

September 1, 2008  08:37 PM ET

??? Have you lost yet? did i say finally a lost? If you really want to know what I meant ask don't assume. In fact I meant finally you take on someone who can complete sentences if thats what your inquiring.

Is someone overusing question marks without paying a fee to The Question Mark Man?

September 1, 2008  08:42 PM ET

I shouldn't have assumed, but there's no need to jump on me.

September 1, 2008  08:44 PM ET

sorry gav. Is the question mark man just a herb or does he overestimate his own IQ?

September 1, 2008  08:45 PM ET

That "era" crap is BS Johnny Untias was great but he wan't as accurate and he wan't as big of a playmaker.

September 1, 2008  08:46 PM ET

Give DGD a break about the cherry picking stuff. Most throwdowns are not created by great TDers. NCshvDavid being the exception, of course.

September 1, 2008  08:47 PM ET

Thanks, Pitt.

You can't compare him to players of today like that. He was one of the most accurate passers and biggest playmakers of his time.

Yea just like me rite?

September 1, 2008  09:08 PM ET

I don't know. The stats point to Peyton, but he was in a different era. You DO have to take era into consideration. Babe Ruth is considered the greatest baseball player ever to many because he thoroughly dominated his era.

The verdict: Push, as of right now

September 1, 2008  09:11 PM ET

By choosing that avatar, does the FnFGroupie overestimate how secure he feels about his own sexuality?

you seem ignorant now question mark man. that is lupe fiasco.
