Is Andre Iguodala "worth" $80 million?

There was a lot of talk when Iguodala turned down $57 million last year, but this year his gamble paid off with a huger contract. The question is, is he worth it for the Sixers, would be be worth it for ANY team at $80 million?

I think Igoudala may be one of the under appreciated players in the league. While huge contracts usually go to those "superstars" who score and dunk all night and mug for the camera, Andre does all the things that they don't like to show on sportscenter. Andre is a physical player, who takes on the best offensive players defensively. He's a strong finisher around the rim, and has well above average court vision for getting team mates involved. He rebounds with the best at his position and he plays aggressively with or without the ball on either end of the court. His comparisons to a scottie pippen type player are reasonable. The sixers have a classy guy here who does all the right things, which eventually they are going to need if they want to make it deeper into the playoffs.

You may be a bomb sniffin dog- but that is not a bomb you have been snorting

1. Iggy is not going to be the best player on ANY title team
2. Iggy is not going to be the SECOND best player on ANY title team

name me the Top 10 SG/SF that he is better than -
and I bet I can find a few that will cost less than 11,300,000

Josh Smith, Josh Howard and Tayshaun Prince off the top of my head-

and with a cap of 58,680,000 you are dropping a HUGE chunk of it on a player that is not going to lead you to the title- and sorry to say it- but Brand is not going to be a number 1 star either

and yes Iggy is up there with the other combo SG/SF with Points, Rebounds, Assists, turnovers and whatnot. But thats not all you need

to drop almost 20% of your cap (before escalations) you need an all star- Iggy has NEVER made the All-Star game- and you need a playoff performer ( Iggy is on that Tracy McGrady out in round 1 timeline)

He is NOT worth THAT much cash.

I'm going to say again that for the sake of real arguments, being an "All Star" doesn't mean much. In some cases, it's a joke of an popularity contest.

$80 million over 6 years, depending on how it's structured is only $13-14 million per year. Of his draft class, Luol Deng signed for roughly the same contract reportedly. And Iggy has better stats. Comparing him to players already under contract isn't quite as fair, since it's not like Stefanski somehow "chose" Iggy over Tayshaun or Josh Howard.

Speaking of Howard, while the two score about the same amount, Iguodala ranks about 3rd in the league in steals, dwarfing Howard. Also Iguodala also manages to rank in the top 30 overall in assists despite not being a starting PG, Howard is outclassed here also.

Speaking of stats, Iggy is one of the few players in the NBA who routinely averages over 18 points per game, ~5 boards and ~5 assists. The other players are Lebron, Kobe, TMac.

Iggy has improved his shooting and scoring each of the 4 seasons he's been in the league. He has also decreased his turnovers despite being expected to handle the ball more.

ok, Let me give you my situation

I am a Bobcats fan- I have a top 12 player at EVERY POSTION (but Center)

yet No player in the top 5 at his place.

Add a Solid Center and the Cats are a Middle of the Road 5-6 in the East team.

Now If I heard we traded for Iggy- has my team changed? Have we upgraded for killing my cap?

NO- we did that with Jason Richardson already (thanks MJ!!)

20.4 PPG 1.3 SPG 5.0RPG 2.9 APG 0.7BPG 1.9TPG
Or
19.9 PPG 1.9 SPG 5.7RPG 4.1 APG 0.5BPG 2.4TPG

So am I really killing my cap for that much of an upgrade?

is it REALLY worth it TO THE TEAM??

No.

If you KILL my cap for that much of an upgrade you are not doing that much. Iggy is not putting my team over the hump- or ANY team over the Hump.

He is a REALLY good player- and he MAY be worth it one day- But adding Iggy is like adding Ray Allen

Nice 3rd peice- but he is not going to make your team a contender-

and at 11,300,000 FOR NEXT YEAR ALONE

witch is 20% of NEXT YEARS CAP (by the way his CHEAPEST YEAR)

he is NOT worth it.

A few things teams need to be championship contenders:
1) A good ball handler/distributor
2) A good low post presence
3) Great defense

A championship contender needs to have the ability to handle the ball, and the sixers have andre miller to do that for now... but Iggy has proven himself to be a capable ball handler also. the nicest thing is his ability and willingness to distribute the ball absolutely sets him apart from almost all other players of his comparison especially for a 4th year player. If a player is open, Iggy WANTS to pass the ball, thats a great attitude.

Contender teams need lockdown defenders, ie. Bruce Bowen, Tayshuan, Kobe, Posey, or the way Pierce shut down Kobe. Iggy can do that. He's physical enough to guard small forwards like Lebron and Pierce, and quick enough to guard Kobe or Rip Hamilton.

Iggy's contract is sizeable, but it's NOT the type of "max contract" that players like Gilbert Arenas signed: ~$111 million over 6 years.

Iggy is only in his 4th season and he's shown progressive improvement each season. He's the type of player who players better when you put good players next to him, and in fact, good players get better with Iggy on the court.

So then what?

Iggy is going to do all that?

Bowen is the 4th best player on his team - and makes 4,125,000

Prince is betweent the 1st and 4th best player on his team- 8,675,620

Kobe makes 19,490,625 - but he is a MVP and HOF to Be

Posey makes 5,585,000

So how are they even CLOSE To the bang for the buck that Iggy provides- No wait they give more

Posey? Really ?

Gilbert makes only 3 Mill a year more than Iggy on average

and Gibert is a THREE time All-Star

in 2007 he was 3rd in the NBA in scoring with 28.4 PPG and is also seventh in the NBA in Steals per game

He is also a 2nd team All-NBA selection in 2007

All that for "only" 3 mil a year more? and Gilbert made LESS THAT year than Iggy will make THIS year

If Gilbert comes to the Bobcats - I know my team made a pretty good Jump (not that I want HIM either)

Iggy is only in his 4th season and he's shown progressive improvement each season

Iggy went up 1.7PPG and DOWN .3Boards DOWN .9APG from year 3 to 4 - so NO that is not improvement by ANY measure

If he does not crack at LEAST 20 PPG for ONCE- then this is a MAJOR Error by the Sixers

Argument*. I assume there will be great arguments.

15 wins a day until Dec 31. That's a lot, but it looks like you are giving it your all.

New TD: Over/Under 999 TD wins for David.

That second one was a correction. Damn computer betrayed me.

September 2, 2008  03:24 PM ET

i think it was smart to cash Iggy in with Elton Brand but the price tag was WAY too high. Iggy is past his prime.

September 2, 2008  03:28 PM ET

Leaning right thus far. Will wait for more arguments

September 2, 2008  03:31 PM ET

Will wait but so far the Pimp has my attention.

September 2, 2008  04:20 PM ET

Iggy is good... but not that good!!!!!!!! Overpaying for players is one of the worst things teams can do.

The other is trading for an aging Shaq or an aging Jason Kidd... whooops, sorry, already happened!

Vote to David.

September 3, 2008  02:44 PM ET

WHO THAT?????

September 3, 2008  09:03 PM ET

Good TD>Better arguments. He is a great talent but so far he not a difference maker when it comes to winning it all

September 4, 2008  11:35 AM ET

Of course he is not he is a valuable assest to his team but and said previous in this age or salary caps and cash strapped teams those kind of numbers should really be reserved for future HOF players.
