I think the NBA All-Star game is NOT a true mesure of a Players worth.

It is too much of a popularity contest and too many players have not been rewarded as an All-Star

these are NOT the best C,PF,SF,SG,PG and 7 non-pos players in the NBA

Disagree?

TD!

Ok I am going to go ahead and take this one and good luck.

Ok now being that who is or is not the best is a matter of opinion and debate I will say the NBA All Star game is a pretty accurate judge of who the best players are.

1)You have the first selections which represent the fan opinions
2)You have the second selections which are the coaches picks

So you have both the spectators and the coaches opinions so you have a wide range of opinions covered. Sure with each year you may find someone left off that you may feel was snubbed or you might see a person and be like how did they make it. However I think overall it is a pretty accurate judge of who is the best players especially when looking over a peiod of a number of years.

Well anyways a ton more to come but I will leave it for arguments 2 and 3

Exhibit A Ralph Sampson

Going a BLISTERING 8.7 boards and 15.6 PPG (not even top 20 for EITHER Case)

over players such as Otis Thorpe (10.0 & 18.9 ) james Donaldson (11.9 & 10.8 -4th in boards and in FG%) Larry Nance (8.7 & 22.5 - plus 8th in Blocks)

Exhibit B

Kareem- much is made about his All-Star streak- But his final year he averaged 4.5 rebounds and 10.1 Points- and yet his teammate AC Green does not make the game with his team-leading 9.0 boards and 13.3 ppg

how is that fair?

Kareem made EIGHT STRAIGHT All-Star games without averaging more than 8.7 boards per game- and ranking no higher than NINETEENTH in the NBA

8 All Star slots GONE- yet someone say like Mark Eaton spends 7 YEARS on the top 3 in blocks per game- 4 titles and 5 years over 8 boards per game- 2 times over 10 per game- and yet when comparing- he is a ONE time all star.

Exhibit C

Derek Harper

29th in Steals per game
67th in Assists per Game

2 time all defensive team

6 Straight years of better than 17ppg and 6 APG

Yet no all star games.

Lets start by going backwards

Exhibit C

Derek Harper- It was actually only 5 seasons

I like how you mention him being 28th in spg and 67 in apg. So lets see where he ranked in those categories

86-87= 11th apg, 7th spg
87-88= 11th apg, 11th spg
88-89= 17th apg, 13th spg
89-90= 14th apg, 5th spg
90-91= 16th apg, 15th spg

Harper was a poing guard and was never in the top at assists per game and was never on a championship team. Normally if you are a low assist guy and you make an all star team its because you lead your team to a ring example of this is Tony parker. Harper was good but I think it is easy to debate that he was not one of the very best in the league

Exhibit B

Kareem- 8 straight all star games you question

Ok so you mention Eaton. First is Kareem second is Eaton

82-83= 21.8 ppg, 7.5 rpg, 2.2 bpg, 2.5 apg
82-83= 4.3 ppg, 5.7 rpg, 3.4 bpg, 1.4 apg

83-84= 21.5 ppg, 7.3 rpg, 1.8 bpg, 2.6 apg
83-84= 5.6 ppg, 7.3 rpg, 4.3 bpg, 1.4 apg

84-85= 22 ppg, 7.9 rpg, 2.1 bpg, 3.2 apg
84-85= 9.7 ppg, 11.3 rpg, 5.6 bpg, 1.5 apg

85-86= 23.4 ppg, 6.1 rpg, 1.6 bpg, 3.5 apg
85-86= 8.5 ppg, 8.4 rpg, 4.6 bpg, 1.3 apg

out of space hold votes

Nice how you "ran out of room" before getting to these stats

86-87 - 17.5PPG 6.7 RPG 1.2 BPG
Eaton - 7.7 PPG 8.8 PRG 4.1 BPG (LL)

87-88 - 14.6ppg 6.0 Rpg 1.2 BPG
Eaton - 7.0 PPG 8.7 RPG 3.7 BPG (LL)

88-89 - 10.1ppg 4.5 RPG 1.1 BPG
Eaton - 6.2 PPG 10.3RPG 3.8 BPG

Lets keep in Mind that the 7'4 CENTER is not even leading his own TEAM in rebounds at this point- a player 7 inches SHORTER is

Next
Harper lead the Mavs to the WEST FINALS - some reason A player named Ervin keep winning all the time

I guess Pulling Blackman and Aguirre up against Worthy, Cooper and, yes, KAJ - I suppose he does stink huh?

ok - lets get to someone more recent?

Defensive player of the Year
2 Times All Def 1st team 2 Times 2nd Team
4 Block titles- 6 times in the TOP 5- 8 top 10s
3 top 10s in boards, 2nd one year

12 year career with a 12.6PPG average- 8 Straight years averaging a Double Double

The other player

Ave 19.0 PPG- only 2 years in 6 with double digit Rebounds

Once got as high as 7th in BPG - Never had enough to qualify for the top 20 in Boards - even tossing that out, once COULD have finished 5th and 7th- other 4 years out of the top 15

Guess the 6 time AS?
Guess the 0 time AS?

"Nice how you "ran out of room" before getting to these stats"

Actually I planned on getting to those so the "ran out of room" was lame.

Eaton was more of a one dimensional player where Kareem was still giving his team points, rebounds, and blocks. Kareem was the better all around player.

Kareems last year really didnt deserve it. But didnt I say that you will end up getting guys sometimes where you say how did he make it? If you think Eaton deserved to be in over Kareem for those 7 years though well you need to lay off whatever it is your on

Harper made it to the Western Conference Finals 1 time!!! Yes the Lakers did knock him out of the playoffs some but so did the Blazers, and Supersonics. He also had a lot of years where he had a losing record as a starter heck in 92-93 he was 8 and 52 in games he started

You are naming a guy here and guy there that missed out on a year or two they should have been in. I said that would happen but overall it is still pretty accurate

The first NBA all star game was in 51 and you came up Harper and Eaton who can both be argued against and you got one other guy in 57 years worth of games? Sounds pretty accurate to me

Yeah the All Star starters are crap. Remember back in like 02 or 03 when Shaq was prime and Yao Ming was starting over him.

September 5, 2008  12:36 PM ET

Well the starters Roles can be BS as well- but who remebers the starters?

I am referring to the TEAM at large.

yea but at the end of the day Shaq will get just a much credit for being there as Yao

September 5, 2008  01:32 PM ET

forget starters and non starters, i've said for years that while i enjoy the aspect of all-star voting, and the game etc... the all-star status doesn't mean ANYTHING. especially in a league with uneven conference talents, you can have positions like SG or PF where great players don't even get ON THE TEAM because of their position and conference.

for years, the west had duncan, nowitzki, garnett, brand, webber, and boozer battle for the PF spots... the fact that some don't even make the team doesn't make them any worse. Similiarly in the east for years, there was the annual Tracy Mcgrady, Allen Iverson, Vince Carter, Michael Redd, etc... log jam at shooting guard voting.

I was going to tackle this one but spent too much time formulating my side. Oh well.

Come vote for the 1st ever FANNATION ALL STAR TEAM

for some reason I had a feeling you were going left since your first comment

September 5, 2008  05:19 PM ET

Interesting and highly bold topic.

Actually my opinion is:

- Starters are a popularity contest and strange things can happen there (e.g.: Yao starting over Shaq, like Joe mentioned here in the comments)

- Bench players are the "real deal". Sure, there are some snubs and tough picks here and there, but we're talking about mostly accurate all-star bench picks.

September 6, 2008  11:49 AM ET

Completey agree with David on this one

September 6, 2008  01:02 PM ET

Oh and dude if you are comparing Yao and Camby like I think you are well Yao is the better all around center of the two.

September 6, 2008  01:20 PM ET

This was real close for me and both have great arguments. I agree left but prefer rights arguments. >>>>>>>>>>>

September 6, 2008  01:21 PM ET

All star games SUCK!

September 6, 2008  01:45 PM ET

I like how you work your angle though and focus on just one aspect of a game and try to say a guy is better than another player. Im going to try that real quick using a 10 season span and who tell me who was the better of the two

PLAYER A
92-93= 13.0 rpg 3.5 bpg
93-94= 11.8 rpg 4.1 bpg
94-95= 12.5 rpg 3.9 bpg
95-96= 11.8 rpg 4.5 bpg
96-97= 11.6 rpg 3.3 bpg
97-98= 11.4 rpg 3.4 bpg
98-99= 12.2 rpg 2.9 bpg
99-00= 14.1 rpg 3.3 bpg
00-01= 13.5 rpg 2.7 bpg
01-02= 10.8 rpg 2.4 bpg

PLAYER B
92-93= 13.9 rpg 3.5 bpg
93-94= 13.2 rpg 2.9 bpg
94-95= 11.4 rpg 2.4 bpg
95-96= 11.0 rpg 2.9 bpg
96-97= 12.5 rpg 2.9 bpg
97-98= 11.4 rpg 2.4 bpg
98-99= 10.7 rpg 1.7 bpg
99-00= 13.6 rpg 3.0 bpg
00-01= 12.7 rpg 2.8 bpg
01-02= 10.7 rpg 3.0 bpg

SO LETS SEE FOR THAT 10 SEASON SPAN PLAYER A

out rebounded player B 6 seasons
out blocked player B 7 seasons
tied player B in rebounds in 1 season
tied player B in blocks in 1 season
oh and player A was 4x Defensive player of the year

SO LETS SEE FOR THAT 10 SEASONS PLAYER B

out rebounded player A 3 seasons
out blocked player A 2 seasons
tied player A in rebounds in 1 season
tied player A in rebounds in 1 season
0x defensive player of the year

player A 3x All Defensive 1st team 3x All Defensive 2nd team
player B only made 2 all defensive teams in that span both being 2nd team

So player was clearly the better rebounder and shot blocker right? Player A clearly the better defender right?

So lets see

player A= Mutombo
player B= Shaq

so Mutombo was the better centre of the 2 for Shaq's first 10 seasons in the league right? According to how you look at things

Fan voting is too much of a popularity contest and players in very large cities hold a distinct advantage over those in smaller cities. Too many past their prime players make all star games. Going left on this one.
