Buy.

Davis has played with Dallas before, and excelled on special teams and has some experience starting at FS. Davis will add safety depth to a very young backup core and maybe even give Roy Williams a little bit of a job push.

But the the real reason I buy this signing is his special teams contributions. Davis is great on special teams, and has already been voted Cowboys Special Teams captain for the upcoming year.

His leadership will help a kickoff unit that could really use a boost.

Disagree?

TD!

Looks like this one is going to sit here until it disappears so I'll give it a shot.

There is no questioning what Davis brings to the table on the field. He's been the Cowboys best special teams player for the last 4 years. Period. From that standpoint, this signing is a no brainer.

Couple of problems, though.

Bill Parcells loves this guy. Signed him to a 2-year $3.5mil contract with a $500k signing bonus as soon as he hit the open market.

Then cut him.

Wha? Tuna knew exactly what he was getting when he jumped all over signing Davis in the off season. There is nothing about Keith that big Bill didn't already know both on and off the field. Handed him a cool half mil. to climb aboard the S.S. Bill Parcells only to throw him overboard 3 weeks into camp. Why? I mean seriously. Nobody is talking. No reason given. Did Davis shave Bills cat, or something?

or

Are their off field issues again? That's the second issue with Davis. With Dallas already being something of a home for wayward souls, bringing Keith back is just adding to the trouble makers. Let's not forget this is a guy who has been SHOT not once, but twice while out clubbing, and lied about it the second time.

Thanks CCC.

Yes, Daivs has had off the field issues in the past. But I dont think this had to do with anything of that sort of kind.

I simply think someone in the Dolphins camp played better than what Parcells expected so Davis and his near 2 million dollar salary became expendable.

Davis will never be a starting safety full time in this league. And with thel ikely emergence of another very good special teams player, Parcells could have simply thought that paying Davis wasnt worth it and just decided to cut his losses.

But, I still think this is a good move for the Cowboys. The Cowboys dont have great kickoff coverage by any stretch, and Davis will improve that, since we wont fire Bruce Read.

Dallas also isnt that deep at safety. Pat Watkins is solid, but Courtney Brown is an unknown and bringing Davis in could end up boosting the secondary a wee bit, too.

Davis is not an answer at safety. He's been given the opportunity numerous times and just isn't cut out as a regular at that position. He's an emergency fill in at the position, at best

There is much more to the Tuna cutting him story than a simple matter of Keith being beat out for the position in training camp

First, he didn't have a $2mil salary. His salary for 2008 was "only" $600k. They had already given him the half mil bonus so that was lost money

More importantly, look at the circumstances surrounding the cut. It occurred just a couple of hours before the team plane was to leave for their THIRD preseason game. Davis had already been given his plane ticket and hotel accommodations the day before. Obviously Miami had every intention of bringing Keith Davis to the game until the last minute when they mysteriously cut him just a couple of hours before departure.

They had no need to cut him. It wasn't a cut down day, and they didn't replace his roster spot. It wasn't to open up room for another player. And, again, they had given the man half a mil. At the very least they would have used him as camp fodder until mandatory cuts.

Something smells fishy, and it's not just Tuna

Ok, who knos what happened. It is all speculation at this point in time. Im going to to focus on the on the field positives with my last asrgument.

Davis is a very good special teams player. This is an area that is hurting on the Cowboys and signing Davis really strengthens a unit that has been lacking. He is a great team leader as well, as he was named team captain just a day after he was signed.

Davis can also provide more depth at safety for the cowboys. Although he is not starting claiber in the league, Keith is suitable fill in guy and can also mentor younger safetys Courtney Brown and Pat Watkins.

If there was something wrong, I think the Cowboys would have stayed away from him. I'll take Davis and his special teams contributions over his bizare release.

He wasn't named a team captain. He was named special teams captain, which isn't new, he just retained that tag from last year. It means nothing.

"Keith is suitable fill in guy and can also mentor younger safetys Courtney Brown and Pat Watkins."

Whoa! Wait a minute. The guy failed miserably when given the opportunity to start at safety and you want him mentoring the young guys? That's like saying the Packers should sign Ryan Leaf to mentor their rookie QB's. It's beyond absurd. Don't you think the "mentoring" duties should be left to their two Pro Bowl safety's and exceptional secondary coach, Dave Campo?

When Davis was shot the first time, Parcells cut him. After showing much remorse and promising he'd never be a problem again he was re-signed. When he was shot the SECOND time, he at first claimed it was a random thing on the highway while driving his girlfriend home from church. Turns out he was returning from the "church" of naked women, again.

Is having a good (not great) gunner on special teams worth the risk of him possibly (probably?) becoming running buddies with Pac-Man? How many "risks" can the Cowboys take before it blows up and they turn into the Bengals?

Now mine is the only TD on the board.

September 6, 2008  05:59 PM ET

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

I meant open TD.

September 6, 2008  06:18 PM ET

Sorry Roberts, I can't help you out there. I stopped caring about hockey with the lockout season.

September 6, 2008  06:23 PM ET

Me too. Thanks for taking this CCC, Im typing it up right now.

September 6, 2008  07:25 PM ET

No problem Travis. Didn't want someone who doesn't know who Keith Davis is to take it...like the fool in your other TD who thinks Tony Curtis is a wide receiver. ;-)

September 6, 2008  10:35 PM ET

Yeah, that was pathetic. Im so excited for tomorow.

September 7, 2008  03:23 PM ET

Tony Curtis? The guy from Spartacus, Some Like it Hot, and The Defiant Ones?

September 7, 2008  10:10 PM ET

Good TD CCC, its always fun.

September 8, 2008  01:21 AM ET

Hmm i think they SHOULD sign him, but CC has the better argument. What to do....

September 8, 2008  01:33 AM ET

That was a good joke goddammit.

Good TD, slightly better arguments right.

September 8, 2008  01:40 AM ET

ok i caved, vote right. Sorry lefty guy... ur arguments were lacking. i wanted to believe u though

September 8, 2008  01:41 AM ET

More convincing arguments by CCC. I'm sold.

September 8, 2008  01:59 AM ET

travis, you argued very well. But CCC is about the toughest opponent you're going to find on FanNation when it comes to arguing about the Cowboys.

September 8, 2008  02:16 AM ET

"travis, you argued very well. But CCC is about the toughest opponent you're going to find on FanNation when it comes to arguing about the Cowboys."

I don't think I've ever lost a Cowboys TD, whether arguing for or against them. This one was tough because it was actually a good signing and I really had to think outside the box to argue it. And Travis did a really good job with it.

September 8, 2008  02:19 AM ET

I take that back, I've lost a couple where I argued Tony Romo was the real deal. I was, of course, right, but to this day you have several people on FN who won't admit that.
