What makes Meyer and Tebow great?
Answer me this:
With his recruits and Tebow as the starter:
He is 1-4 against top opponents. 1-4 (the 1 win being in Gainsville) and unless he puts in a fullback and developes a traditional running game thats the way the ratio will stay.
The Ram said 09/19, 10:47 AM
1-4?
What exactly are you counting as a "top opponent"?
Teams in the Top 10?
No. Can't be that. Since Urban Meyer arrived they are 2-2 against top 10 teams.
Top 25 teams maybe?
Hmmm. That doesn't work either.
They're 7-3 against top 25 teams.
I get it. Urban Meyer irks you. You like your beer cold, your dogs chained to the deck, your cousins pretty, and a fullback in the dadgum backfield!!! YOu can't stand gimmicky offenses. ESPECIALLY when they work.
The SEC is the gold standard. Right Frank? I'm sure you think that if the NFC East had to play an SEC schedule they'd be lucky to go two games a year. Yet Urban Meyer is 13-4 with an SEC Championship in just two years in the SEC.
How's Tennessee doing with their traditional running game? Pretty sure we won't see Tebow and the Gators get thumped by a lousy Pac-10 team this year.
Meyer and Tebow are great because they win. I could care less how they do it. The game changes. Folks like yourself were also the ones protesting in the 40's that no one would ever win throwing the ball more than 10 times a game.
Meyer and Tebow own Tennessee. That's why they're great.
Frank Pentangelli said 09/19, 10:56 AM
I am only refering to last year. The previous year was Zooks recruits and offense with Chris Leak. That was tailored to a pocket passer, a darn good one in Chris Leak.
We are simply refering to Meyers recruits and Tebow as the starter. I think I had made that perfectly clear in my opening argument.
Tell me, when did this offense work against a top opponent besides against TN in Gainsville (note that game was 8 yards from being tied with 4 min to go in the 3rd but the great fumbler Arian Foster took care of that) ? It hasnt. It cant. They either score in 3 plays or go 3 and out for the most part. You keep 2 safeties deep, Corners in zone, Linebackers in zone and they dont have an offense that can sustain drives. If you cant sustain drives you cant win in the SEC.
With Tebow as the starter against top opponents they are 1 (TN in Gainsville) -4 (Auburn, LSU, GA, and Michigan) and you cant dispute that.
Until they can develope a true running game with a full back they cant sustain drives and they cant win.
You stated, "Meyer and Tebow are great because they win."
A 4 loss season is not winning in Top NCAA competition terms.
The Ram said 09/19, 11:19 AM
Fine. I'll play by even those jacked up standards.
First. I don't want to hear about "Urban Meyer winning with Ron Zook's recruits." Because Ron Zook couldn't do JACK with Ron Zook's recruits.
Second. After Florida won the Title, they lost 9 of 11 starters on defense, and 8 of 11 starters on offense. To turn around and go 9-4 (5-3 SEC) is quite good. All their juniors and seniors cashed in and went to the NFL. A drop off was expected. That does not prove they CAN'T win.
You are grasping at anything you can get your hands on. You want to block out everything but one year. One pretty good season and you can't wait to dig a grave and toss Tebow and Meyer into it then dance a jig.
To state that they can't win because of his offense is lunacy. It's like stating today that Eli Manning can't win a Super Bowl because he throws too many interceptions.
I've heard your 3 line summary of how to stop Florida at least 20 times by now. Either you're a genius, or every Defensive Coordinator in the SEC is as dumb as a sack of rocks.
That, or you're not nearly as clever as you think you are. Because NO ONE has been able to keep Florida out of the end zone.
Frank Pentangelli said 09/19, 12:07 PM
It was Zooks recruits. Meyer has the 2nd most fertile recruiting school (behind USC) in the Nation and hes screwed the pooch with his all speed recruiting stance. Its nice to have speed but they are to the point of having desert everynight but no dinner. Eventually it will catch up with you. For example; like when you play top defenses. Pie is good but a healthy program also needs meat and potatos. They do score. Not like they would like to against top opponents b/c they run into a situation where they are either in the endzone in 3 plays or punting in 3 plays. Down the stretch in a tough, close SEC game a 12 play 65 yard drive ending with 3 points is better than a 1 play TD. I will stand by that until my dying day and they cant do it .
There is only 1 year to look at. I said with Tebow (Meyers QB) and Meyers recruits. They lost 4 games. They only beat 1 top opponent and that had to be in their House. They added nothign but a Transfer Back in the offseason who hasnt been used at all. They lost their top recieving threats besides Harvin. There is no reason to believe that this team will fare better against top opponents this year, or any year for that matter.
The Ram said 09/19, 01:22 PM
Frank, you should be ashamed.
Really.
Turn in your SEC Banner, your overalls, and your wooden tooth. You don't dserve them.
I've let it go until now, but you just keep doing it.
You have consistently referred to 2007 Michigan as a "top team."
The 5 SEC teams Florida beat aren't "top teams" but Appalachian State loser Michigan is???
Sellout.
It's crystal clear:
You are cherry picking your evidence.
You just grabbed the 4 games they lost in a down year, and your home team, and designated those as "top teams." You say Tennessee nearly beat them when they won 59-20. But Florida losing by 3 to Auburn and by 4 to the eventual Nation Champion LSU warrants no mention.
Florida is having no trouble competing in the SEC. Why should Florida run the same offense that Tennessee runs? It's not like that's bringing them any success.
As for your assertion that they've added nothing, Florida has had the Third, First, and Second ranked recruiting classes the last 3 years. That's far better than what Zook brought in.
One season is not enough evidence to draw any conclusions. All I see is a Tennessee homer abusing stats, ignoring evidence, and wishing upon a star.

Hmmm. I believe that would be 3-0. Thanks for asking!

Quick question. If Rich Rodriguez, by some miracle, had won the National Championship in his first season at Michigan running his gimmicky option offense, would everyone say he only won it because he had Lloyd Carr's recruits?
Seems to me Meyer winning with Zook's recruits is MORE impressive because they weren't recruited to play in a shotgun spread offense.

in spite? i think they had 7 players from that defense drafted, thats 1 thing about florida and usc, they are the only 2 that can recruit like they do, they make any coach look much better than he is, not to say spurrier wasnt great but his florida recruits didnt hurt, now meyer going speed only with his recruiting is screwing the pooch, wait and see

he didnt win it running his gimmicky option offense, he won it with 4 wides and leak from the shotgun passing from the pocket

Another quick question.
Would Tennessee top .500 if they played in the Mountain West Conference? I mean, if they can't even beat a UCLA team that got slaughtered by BYU, would they stand a chance against Utah, TCU or even Air Force?

I voted for the Ram because Frank is just FACTUALLY INACCURATE.
He states "Until they can develope a true running game with a full back they cant sustain drives and they cant win."
Florida led the nation in 3rd down efficiency. What more can you do to sustain drives? Frank, don't resort to manipulating the truth.

I think the title of this TD should be "Meyer should run a traditional offense with a full-back so they don't score 70 on my Vols"

classic, but you wait, yall be eatin crap monday, see im a true fan, i can want to crucify them following the ucla game but bottom line is that when tn goes to the west coast to open they lose, regardless. phil has 4 career opening game losses and all 4 are on the west coast in games they were favored to win, hell i was so mad i burned my hat
however; at this point, i am rationale and truly predict a win in neyland tomorrow by the vols, florida has looked solid defensively but they aint see a comparable offensive line and backs to tn yet, tn has been hiding something, i look to see gerald jones taking snaps and throwing passes tomorrow, eric berry is going to be tebows leading wr, yall just wait and see

I'll also keep my eyes southward to see if I can make out an orange glow of burning Tennessee merchandise from the backyard of the pentengelli residence on the horizon.

and 1 more thing, who won the sec east last year???
Frank Pentangelli
Total Comments (4904)
in all honesty i wont mid a loss, b/c i think if we lose in bad fashion tomorrow and lose to either GA or Bama Fulmer will be forced to step out, however thats precisely why i see the vols winning, everytime phils back is against the wall it seems like he shows up with traditional TN ball, plays shut out defense and rushes for 200, if we had lost to GA last year phil wouldnt be coaching this year but he went in underdog with fans building his cross and getting the whips ready and torched them with a traditional game of tn football, dont be surprised to see that 150% effort tomorrow to buy him another year
