They're off to a poor 1-2 start and Favre is not good enough (any more) to carry the team. They're just not good...they can't run the ball - 26th in the league, they're a mediocre passing team - 16th in passing yards - much of which came at garbage time, they're last in the AFC in give/take aways, and the defense is giving up 27 points a game - 26th in the league.

It is preposterous and absolutely absurd to rule anyone out of the playoffs at this point.

It is week 3!

Statistics are tremendously misleading at this stage of the season. Different opponents and matchups create many misconceptions about who is good and who is not.

For example:

Does ANYONE think that Jamarcus Russell (87.5 passer rating) is a better QB than Peyton Manning (73.1 rating)? The stats say he is.
How about Julius Jones as the third best RB in the league? Anyone buying that??? Well the stats say so, he's third in rushing yards.

Let bring this to the Jets. Before the season started, what did you expect their record to be after 3 games? Uh...1-2. And they are? 1-2.

They weren't beating the Patriots who were all jacked up to prove they can wn without Brady, and they were hit by a royally peeved off freight train of a team that had gotten screwed in final minute of each of their previous 2 games. No one would have beaten SD on Monday.

You don't have a large enough sample of games to be drawing any conclusions whatsoever. Do you remember where the 2007 Giants were after three games? 1-2. And they looked far worse than the Jets do now.

Statistics through 3 games could very well be misleading, but we're talking about a team that's biggest move in the offseason was to acquire a qa that no longer has the skills to take the team to the next level.

What would be evident through 3 games is improvement over the previous season...are we seeing that? A little...in 2007 they were 26th in overall offense and 18th overall in defense...basically a bad team, not a mediocre team, a bad team. So with Favre (and other acquisitions) you would absolutely have to see significant improvement over the first 3 games to think they have any chance at making the playoffs. So far...not so much, 22nd in overall offense and 12th in overall defense - slight improvement on both sides of the ball but still A BAD TEAM. If they can't compete with good teams, how can the make the playoffs?

If you want bring the sample size into the conversation then that implies you have some understanding of statistics...not yards, ratings, td's, etc...actual statistical probabilities based on samplings and analysis large enough to represent a logical conclusion. QB ratings for Manning and Russell is completely out of context. Your turn, i'm out of spa

Sample size is completely relevant. For example, if I rooted for a team that played Minnesota, Tennessee and Baltimore in it's first three games, their rushing stats would be total crap. But not because they're necessarily bad at rushing, but because of the competition they have faced.

New England and San Diego can wreak havoc on a lot of QB's. That doesn't mean Favre stinks. I've heard nonsense about Favre's skills declining, and him no longer being able to lead a team for five years. Your assertion is nothing new.

The Jets have a cake schedule. They have already played two of their hardest games. The next 7 weeks they get: Arizona, bye, Cincinnati, Oakland, Buffalo, and St Louis. Think their record might improve over that stretch? Their stats sure as heck will.

After week 10 you won't be able to turn on Sportscenter without the analysts drooling all over themselves talking about how rejuvenated Favre is, how much fun he's having out there, and how he has made the Jets a contender. The Jets bandwagon will more packed than a Chinese sweatshop.

Whether the Jets are one of the best teams or not, their schedule will keep them in the playoff race.

Sample size is relevant, but the QB ratings of Manning and Russell are not, they're out of context, which was my assertion.

I don't believe Favre stinks, he just isn't good enough to carry the Jets to the playoffs. Leading a team and carrying a team are not the same. I'm not questioning his leadership, at least not in this TD - it is debatable, I'm questioning his ability to lift A BAD TEAM to playoff caliber.

This entire TD is based on speculation, and as i started it, i very well can't go after your week 10 sportscenter comment. I will ask this though... are you an avid Jets fan and actually believe what you're saying?

And as for the creampuff schedule, aren't you being somewhat hypocritical? You say it's too early to say the Jets are not a playoff team, which would imply it's too early to say they have a creampuff sched. Same principle...I don't agree with you, but try not to contradict yourself within the 2 posts you've made.

Again...running out of space. A lot of speculation in this TD, but right now the Jets are bad. I assert that even if they improve, they're no playoff team.

BTW...I'm a Ram too, class of 2000.

QB ratings of Manning and Russell are relevant because it illustrates just how misleading early season statistics are.

You don't like ME speculating when YOU started a TD speculating where the Jets will be in 3 months? Makes sense.

I don't need to be pro or anti-Jets to take an interest in driving a stake into the heart of incredibly premature judgments.

The Jets are a team that is pulling together several different offseason pieces they acquired in the offseason. Favre, Jenkins, Faneca, Woody, and draft picks. It will take time before they are a well-oiled operation, especially on the offensive line. That their defense is already improved is a good omen, and they have plenty of "get well" games to get on a good run offensively.

It's not hypocritical for me to think that Cincy, KC, Stl, and Oakland stink. None of those teams may even have the head coach they have now when they play the Jets. Their own organizations are panicking. And it's not because they're trying to figure out where to hold the Super Bowl victory parade.

Fans of the Jets may be panicking because they had unrealistic expectations, but the organization is not. 1-2 is far from a death knell.

So you think they're good?

Ram, you make a strong argument, but it isn't just a matter of how good the Jets might be. It's also a matter of how good teams are in the AFC East. Miami spanked NE, but NE is still a very good team. Buffalo will win the division (just look at their schedule and you'll agree), so it's a matter of wild card options at this point anyway. There are too many other "better than average" teams in the AFC that will take the spot over the Jets.

I've got three arguments. I'll get there. Don't forget that the Jets have the same basic schedule as the Bills.

It's a long way to go until week 17.

September 25, 2008  10:45 AM ET

Ram.....Buddy ol Pal

The Jets wont make the playoffs. Lets assume the Bills and Pats finish 1 & 2 regardless of order. The Jets wont make a push for the last wild card spot. How many times a week do you see how the Jets are dumbing down the playbook for Brett?

Im do not agree with you, but so far you have the better arguement

By the way.....I just traded Manning for Russel in our FF leauge. Thanks for the advice

September 25, 2008  10:49 AM ET

Why is it written in stone that the Bills and NE finish 1-2? Maybe Randy Moss turns into Oakland Moss, and the offense tanks. Who knows? And as much as I might incur the wrath of Bills fans: they're not a lock for the division. They may be the favorite, but the season is far from over.

September 25, 2008  10:50 AM ET

By the way Goodell, have you looked at our matchup this week?

No that's not why I mention it.

I've got a secret weapon. You may have Levy...but not even he can overcome my guy.

September 25, 2008  11:13 AM ET

Vote left The Jets have no chance -- Bills or pats will win the division Wild card is not remotely doable. I see the Jets going 9-7 tops

September 25, 2008  11:36 AM ET

The jets should just keep sucking and stock piling high draft picks. Then be nasty for a few years

September 25, 2008  12:54 PM ET

Brett Farve is a tw@t but I still think they'll sneak in...voting right

September 25, 2008  01:22 PM ET

Nope they wont make it, there not clicking, Favre can only do so much with a sucky offense.

September 25, 2008  01:33 PM ET

yes thats clearly true
If a new QB cant learn a system in three games then he never can

September 25, 2008  02:20 PM ET

This isn't an opinion poll. Why is everyone voting on one argument? My opponent or I may forfeit the next two turns, or type gibberish. This is a debate, please vote accordingly.

By the way....I didnt vote yet even though I think the Jets wont make the playoffs
