Watching the steelers last week against the Eagles, I realized how many penalties that are called are incorrect. For example, the saftey of Big Ben was due to an illegal grounding call from his own endzone. Two reasons this is incorrect, one he had 2 eligable recievers within 5 feet of his throw, and two, he was out of the QB pocket. Due to this poor referee judgement, the Steelers went down to scores and lost the game. For reasons like this, penalties should be challengeable, because refs make mistakes, but once the call is made, it is irreversable, wrong or not. Countless times teams have lost due to poor penalties, and refs have even apologized after games, because they saw a replay and realized they screwed up. So why not just fix it during the game??

Enough said.
Dont like it...try me.

Penalties should never ever be challenged! A coach could run out of challenges within the 1st 2 plays of the game.

There are always going to be penalties that get missed and some that are just bad calls. The penalties are part of the human aspect of having men being in charge of making these calls. Penalties are not like plays (did he get both feet in, did he lose the ball before being down), there are usually no clear cut view of most penalties. Holding can be called on each and every single play, so if penalties can be challenged, a coach would be smart and just challenge each and every single play.

The game is long enough and having replay to ensure calls like completions, TD or not, fumbles etc are right is good enough.

All football players and coaches realize that penalties are part of the game and if they could be challenged would be one of the worst things the NFL could ever institute.

Does it suck when a bad call goes against your team? Yes, however, it is better than having every single play challenged due to penalties either being called or not being called.

Challenging certain penalties could also rule out biasness of referees and officials.

In having challengeable penalties, it wouldnt give the right to challenge false starts, offsides, ect. ergo 5 yard penalties. Re-read my example above of the steelers game...situations like this I am referring to in challengeable penalties.

And in doing so, I wouldnt say that the ref would take the hike to the sideline and review it and all, I would recommend, college style review, done straight from the booth, being alotted no more than 30 seconds to be reviewed, with A LIMIT of 2 challenges per game.

Do you have any proof of bias of the referees and officials or are you just spewing a conspiracy theory? I know some people believe the NFL is fixed but this ain't the NBA. Show me 1 PROVEN bias ref/official.

As for Ben, his knee was down in the endzone first (SAFETY), so a replay would have cost the Steelers a timeout, 2 points and a free kick.

The only penalty that could be reviewable is Pass Interference and even that would have it's issues. A play like that looks completely different in real time, you'd have to have multiple camera angles showing multiple things at once (multiple angles of the WR and DB and an angle of the QB with the footage in sync to the WR/DB footage to see when the ball is actually released).

That's the problem with challenging penalties - there just isn't enough angles of each individual player on the field to ensure you got enough coverage to either call a penalty or overrule one. With a fumble, play on the sideline etc you have something concrete to judge it on (foot in bounds, did the ground cause the fumble etc). Penalties depend on many things when they are called - was the ref in position to make the call or out etc).

out of room

Penalties should NOT be reviewalbe execpt for pass interference....Thats it. Everything else should be made in real time

2 TD's in one day stowe......Are you feeling ok or did they block the Rusty nut again?

September 25, 2008  01:27 PM ET

god, if penalties were reviewable theyd have to give coaches 50 challenges and the sunday afternoon game would be over sometime wendsday night

September 25, 2008  01:28 PM ET

Goodell - the Nut is forever blocked now.

September 25, 2008  01:30 PM ET

well when they reviewed the play on sunday it also showed his knee was already down before he threw the ball. So it would have been a safety anyway

September 25, 2008  01:46 PM ET

With a limit, they should be challenge-able. Like a time out, you'd better use them wisely.

Vote right because he wasn't out of the pocket.

September 25, 2008  02:57 PM ET

Worst.Idea.Ever. Seriously. There are bad calls in EVERY game. Why don't we just get rid of officials entirely and make every ruling via replay after the fact?

And the pocket extends from tackle to tackle for purposes of determining intentional grounding.

I know the knee was down, thats not the basis as to which I am referring, I am pointing out the fact that he threw the ball towards two eligable recievers, outside of the pocket and was charged with intentional grounding. The ref stated he was throwing the ball to ineligable recievers inside the pocket. Results in two points and my teams loss. if challenges were available, it would have been overruled and we would have punted, potentially giving us a chance to win the game.

and the basis of your vote to the right comment holds no relevance with my topic, my TD wasnt a statement of whether or not Ben was sacked, it was whether or not penalty replays should be alotted. Vote for the topic or dont vote.

too many ifs, ands, or buts if you start challenging penalties. the refs would lose complete integrity and be rendered obsolete by constant video review.

September 25, 2008  05:03 PM ET

I think Pinstripe has the answer.

Put up a series of cameras and eliminate the human element altogether. If the computer says it happened, it happened. Welcome to the space oddessy.

September 25, 2008  05:11 PM ET

this goes both ways. THERE IS NO REASON THEY ARENT REVIEWABLE for pass interference.

those calls and non calls are a joke!

September 25, 2008  05:31 PM ET

do you know how long games would be?

September 25, 2008  06:46 PM ET

anyone who watched steelers eagles would have seen in the replay that before big ben released the ball his knee was down in the endzone. Challenging the would have cost the Steelers a time out, not saved them the game
