Ed Reed Fan:Canton Bound??? said 07/08, 10:08 PM
People say this because of the large fanbase their team has. This is true, it's very large, but they're labeled as the Yankees of soccer, people say, because of what's thought of as exhorbitant spending for players. They do spend alot but no more than Chelsea, Arsenal, and especially Real Madrid in recent years. Remember when Real Madrid spent all those millions for Beckham, Roberto Carlos and their entire star-studded lineup at that time ? The Yankees are usually the first team to pounce on premier talent and that's another difference from Man-U. They spend on players that will fit their system, not just stars. For example, they could have made a play for Thierry Henry of Arsenal (now Barcelona) but instead they went for young talent, Carlos Tevez of Argentina's national team. Man-U did sign Anderson (Brazil) and Nani (Portugal) but check this out: Real Madrid is currently making a play for Cesc Fabregas and Chelsea for Florent Malouda. Barcelona got both Yaya Toure & Eric Abidal too. This helps illustrate why Man-U shouldn't have the Yankees tab. The yankees are either loved or hated by just about every baseball fan; there's no middle-ground; this is not the case w/ Man-U at all

READ MY ARGUMENT PLEASE!!!!
I don't know who you're listening to but whoever it is must like baseball more than "football" (soccer) because I would never compare the two. However, I will make the argument that the two teams are very similar and have the same attitude about winning.
First of all, both teams have the $Bank$ to stock up on star players. For instance: Christiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney, Van der Sar, Luis Saha, Rio Ferdinand, Gary Neville and Ryan Giggs. These are not the best players in the World, but they are the cream of the crop as far as the FA Premier league goes.
The Yankees have a similar system with players like Alex Rodriguez, Derek Jeter, Jason Giambi, Jorge Posada, Johny Damon. Most of their season has been plagued by individual play and poor hitting or pitching, not by lack of individual talent. Again, these are not THE best in the world, but they are top notch.
Both teams are highly respected for winning, and widely hated by the opposition for the same reason. The only other team like the Yankees in the Premier League is Chelsea because of their payroll.
Ed Reed Fan:Canton Bound??? said 07/09, 09:49 AM
There are some similarities between the two teams except for lately as Man-U has been very good in the past few years and the Yankees haven't been even though their squads have been stacked and, as usual, expectations have been high. I'm a little differing in opinion though about your point w/ the 5 yankees in it. A-Rod, Jeter, and Posada are arguably the best players in the majors at their positions. The only Man-U players you named that could be considered best at theirs is Christiano Ronaldo.

The Yankees have played badly this year. There's no way to argue that. But how can you say they have done badly recently when they make the playoffs every year? That's only this year. Both teams havent been as successful as they had expected, with ManU winning no major trophies this year. Both have extremely talented squads for their League, and are a competitor every year. Both teams pay top dollar for quality talent, and have successful owners who can pay for it. They both deal with contraversy as well (A-Rod and Rooney-C.Ronaldo @World Cup)
As for The individual talents, the Yankees do have a lot of great players, but Man U is similar. The players that I named are excellent players, and are top quality in the FA premier League. Not the best in the World, but much higher than most teams can afford.
MAN U IS NOT THE YANKEES OF SOCCER, BUT THE DIRECT COMPARISONS BETWEEN THE TWO ARE FAIR. Chelsea, Barca, and ReAl Madrid take the cake, but Man U has the same way of going about business.
Ed Reed Fan:Canton Bound??? said 07/09, 11:40 AM
I think you just basically said i was right because you said the comparisons are fair which they are a little similar, but you said "MAN U IS NOT THE YANKEES OF SOCCER" and that's what I was saying. You can't compare the A-Rod/Jeter controversy w/ the Ronaldo/Rooney one because one was off-the-field catty stuff and the other was on the field on a world-wide stage for millions & millions to see. Man-U works more w/ their younger players instead of ditching them for "now talent" like the Yankees do
NEfan01 said 07/09, 02:40 PM
You said everyone calls them the Yankees of soccer. Who does? Not too many people, not even yourself. Not me either. But the direct comparison is fair. They are inordinately similar. In too many ways to ignore.
I agree Chelsea and ReAl Madrid are more like the Yankees of football, but you make it seem as if they are incomparible. Both have large amounts of fans and enemies, and they buy players of top quality. Not many people call them the Yankees of soccer because they are not but they are comparable, which is my point.
My point about C Ronaldo and A-Rod was that both organizations have to deal with fan relations. When Ronaldo did that on the world stage, they fans were on his back. When A-Rod struggled LAST YEAR, the fans and meadia were all over him and heckling him like crazy.

Maybe calling Man U the Yankees of the Premier League would be more accurate. Or even better, the Yankees are the Man U of baseball.

Chelsea are the Yankees of the football world, and they don't play good football either. I'd much rather watch a United game than a Chelsea one. It's too bad Chelsea is the team that's always coming to the states for exhibition games. United have a great youth team and really work hard with their youngsters, Chelsea steals talent from other teams. United build their team up with young players as much as possible - Chelsea don't even try...

I have always heard of Chelsea being the "Yankees" because they have over 100 million euros just to play around with. They have guys like Arjen Robben who comes off the bench some of the time. They have all that money, but they couldn't win the EPL. Man. U isn't the Yankees, but neither of you are getting the vote. I don't feel it is a real fair throwdown, that is why.

The main reason they are called the "Yankees" is because they are owned by the Glazers, the same guys that own the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Therefore, since they are owned by an American ( Called a Yankee by the Brits) they are refered to as Yankees.
