Jose Reyes would be my man at short. He has been something of a leader for the successful Mets, especially in the lineup-where he's one of (if not THE) best leadoff man in the game. His hitting is solid, baserunning extraordinary, and he could be a threat for eleven or twelve more years at his current age of 24.

jose reyes is great, but what about a-rod, i know that he is 32 but judging by the way he is playing this year, it doesnt look like he is slowing down, he hits for homeruns, drives in a lot of runs, hits for average, he can steal bases, and his fielding has improved this year

A-Rod was a good choice, but there are a few setbacks that put Reyes in front of Alex.
1) You're right A-Rod is 32Jose Is 8 years younger! That's 8 Years more of great work in the future, A-Rod can't keep goin 'til he's 48-Julio Franco'd be your man there.
2)A-Rod doesn't truly know how to work with the media and assume a leadership role in the clubhouse-it seems Reyes has done a great job with that.
3) Shortstop has been called QB of the infield. Reyes plays that pos., ARod hasn't since '03.

a-rod is older, but i think he has more years left of the same production because jose reyes game relies on speed and he is going to slow down as he gets older, power hitters can maintain until their 40s, speed declines in the 30s and once reyes loses his speed, he has lost the best part of his game which is stealing
a-rod has done well with the media this year, considering he gets probably the most attention besides barry bonds in mlb, a-rod doesn't assume the leadership role because that belongs to jeter, the captain
3rd base is the hot corner and he is closer to the batter than the SS so it just as hard or harder position to play than SS

Jose Reyes is a Five-Tool player, his game does not rely solely on speed, and he'll be fast for at least 9 or 10 more years. SS is the quarterback of the infield, he starts many double plays, handles groundouts, and if the 3B is playing in, he has to work with half of the infield. A Rod has no leadership role at all, the Yankees have been at their best with Alex having a subpar week, and who says there can't be coleaders? Jose and Wright , have it worked out pretty well.

rodriguez may bring a few distractions to a team and may not be the best leader, but does that really matter when you look at his stats
from 1996-2006 he's averaged about 42 homeruns, 121 RBIs, 183 hits, 122 runs, 21 SBs a season
the stats don't lie, a-rod is the one person that i would want to start a baseball team around

A-rod will probaly go down as the best player to play this game no doubt statstically but maybe even as a player. He is dominant in every facet of the game. Who wouldnt want the best player of all time on theri team?

He hits for high average (career .331 BA), hits with a lot of power (41 homers a year with 124 RBIs a year), plays gold glove defense, and has only struck out more than 70 times in a season once (his rookie year)...and he's, what, 27, 28?

24.

Reyes is not the best young shortstop in baseball.

only ryan leaf chose a pitcher?

wow...I'd go with a pitcher too. you need a shut down ace for sure if you want to make a serious run.

August 2, 2007  09:40 PM ET

Carlos Zambrano or Verlander!?

a shut down ace only helps your team once every 5 days, at most 36, 37 starts a year during the regular season...and he sits the other 126, 125 of them...a guy like Pujols helps way more than that...always build your team around a great position player...

The best pitcher in baseball Johan Santana, the reigning AL CY winner, winner of 2 of the last 3 CYs in the AL and should have won it in 2005 too, is only 11-8 this year even though he's 4th in the AL in ERA (2.92) and 2nd in BAA, 2nd in Ks and 1st in WHIP...he's given up more than 4 ER ONCE this season...he's 11-8 cause his team doesn't score for him...

Sorry, but again, you build around a position player...
