albert pujols, just look at his stats, averaged about 42 HRs and 126 RBIs in his first six season, not too mention a career batting average of .330
he's young too, 27 years old and he isn't injury prone

Ichiro would be a player to start an organization around. He has speed in the outfield and has a cannon for an arm. Ichiro hits for singles- doubles and contributes for his team every yr. He always has one of the highest batting avg. and has 265 SB. His OBP is .379. The speed he brings on the base path and in the OF is something to Fear. He was a rookie of the YR. Has won 6 Gold Gloves and was the All-Star MVP.

Ichiro is consistent and plays day to day

pujols is a way bigger contributer offensively, pujols has a career batting average of .330 and ichiro has a .333 average, not much of a difference
not to mention pujols has a career.418 OBP, .039 better than ichiro
power hitters contribute a lot more than single and doubles hitters to an offense
pujols was rookie of the year too, he won his first gold glove as well last season
pujols is said to be having an off year this year by his standards, but he still has great numbers, he is just unbelievable

The Thing with power hitters is they go into slumps and have troubles getting out. they start hitting pop-ups and lose confidence, with a player who hits singles-doubles dont go into many slumps bc they keep their same swing.

Pujols is a good player but defensively he doesnt do to much he runs to first and catches the ball, CF or OF is way Harder and determines whether or not the team scores. Ichiro has to run the ball down then gun it home. Offensively they are equal for their types of hitting but defense Ichiro breaks out past pujols

Ichiro- 6 gold gloves, MVP, ROY
this yr strikeout %- P-14%
I-12%

the thing about ichiro is that he is getting older, and his game relies on speed which people lose in their 30s, ichiro is 33, 6 years older than pujols
another thing about pujols, is that he has a world series ring and ichiro does not
how can you call them equal on offense, just think about the bases are loaded two outs in the 9th down by one, done by 3, who do you want up ichiro or pujols? that's a no brainer to me, pujols is clutch, last year he led the league in game winning RBIs
1B is just as important as CF cuz 1B is involved in almost every play

Pujols has talent around him to win and Ist base just look who plays it Big guys who are very slow, Ichiro is aging but not getting slower or he wouldnt be in CF. They swiched him to CF bc he was fast. Ichiro has a more important role do to the fact he has to gun home. AND in your scenario yes Pujols is a good choice but I would go witha guy who hits 14 % pop ups, and always hits for single to win a game. Pujols would have the power but a chance of a pop-up is more likely with him-pop ups-rally kiler

Pujols is off/on
Ichiro is on daily

I'll take A-Rod's speed over Pujols' slightly higher average BA and OBP.

Let's see, Pujols is the only player in history to have 30 or more homers in his 6 first seasons...he's the youngest to 250, and the first player since Ted Williams to begin his career with 100 or more RBIs in his first six season...his carer averages coming into this season, .331, 41 hrs, 124 RBIs...and had only struck out more than 70 times ONCE...his rookie year(incredible for a power hitter)...

Pujols 162 games averages: 43 homers, 129 RBIs, 200 hits, 127 Run...87 BB, 69Ks (again, amazing for a power hitter)

He has a gold glove, even though he's played full seasons at 3 different positions...he's won an MVP, finished 2nd 3 times, and in the top 4 all 6 years he's played...3 time silver slugger (once as a 3B, once as a LF, and once at 1B)

Seriously, he's the man...

P.S...his BA isn't 'slightly' better than ARod's ARod's career BA is .306...Pujols is .331...and ARod strikes out about twice as much as Pujols...

Thanks for doing Twinsfan's job, Jim. You convinced me. So should I give him credit for your work?

August 5, 2007  01:50 PM ET

thanks jim

August 5, 2007  04:49 PM ET

ummm A-Rod no question

August 5, 2007  04:59 PM ET

pujols isnt off and on, his career batting average is .003 worse than ichiro, so that would make ichiro off and on too, you can't call a career .330 hitter off and on

August 5, 2007  05:13 PM ET

you said pujols has talent around him to win, rolen and edmonds are getting old and their play is deterorating, rolen has 6 HRS this year, edmonds is batting .232
no other cardinal regular position player is batting more than .300, other than chris duncan and pujols the most HRs for one player is 7, and he leads duncan(2nd on team) by 13 RBIs and the next closest, rolen, by 25

August 5, 2007  06:58 PM ET

yeah but last yr. i saw edmonds robbing homers and rolens hitting bombs not homers all the time but bombs, and they had good pitching but they gave that away

Ichiro has him a couple others and few pitchers

'Thanks for doing Twinsfan's job, Jim. You convinced me. So should I give him credit for your work?'

Yeah, I REALLY need to stop doing that until AFTER all the arguments have been made in the throwdown :-)
