My pick is the Angels. At least they are leading the division! They have been on a role since late and have a leader in Vlad that can take them all the way. They pitching is great with John Lackey, Kelvim Escobar, and Bartolo Colon when he comes back...now that is a dominate pitching staff. Not to mention their closer Francisco Rodriguez who has saved 28 games this year (2.63 ERA). As of today, the Angels are 4 games ahaed of the Mariners in the division while the Padres are behind the D-Backs, who are storming ahead in that division who have won 12 of their last 16 games and aren't showing any signs of slowing down. Tip #1 make the playoffs to win the World Series. The Angels have been much more consistent and have won 5 more games then the Padres in the America League. The Padres might not even be the best team in their division. I just don't see the Padres winning the World Series. Sure they have great pitching but you also need great hitting and I don't think they have the hitting to win the World Series.

the padres have the wild card lead, so they are in position to make the playoffs as a wild card and maybe a division winner, they are only one game back of Arizona
they have the top two pitchers in ERA this season with peavy(2.21) and young(1.82!)
they have a phenomal bullpen with heath bell, cla meredith, kevin cameron, and trevor hoffman
sure their offense isn't that great, but they have adrian gonzalez who has 18 HRs, brian giles who is batting .291, morgan ensberg who finished in the mvp race a few years ago, and micheal barret who batted over .300 last year
if they went to a 3 man rotation in the playoffs with peavy, young, and maddux and with their great bullpen they have what takes even with their struggling offense to win the world series

But they aren't going to go to a 3 man rotation in the playoffs because that is not usuall. Chris Young is on the DL. Sure their top 2 pitchers lead the league in ERA but lets take a look at the others......

Greg Maddux: 4.15 ERA 7-9
David Wells: 5.54 ERA 5-8
Justin Germano: 4.30 ERA 6-6

The rest of their pitching staff just isn't that good. They are in the hardest division in the NL with the D-Backs, Rockies, and the Dodgers. Even though they have no bullpen problems their offence is just horrible. They have the worst average in the league with .244. They are 19th in HRs and 2nd to last in hits!!! 27th in RBI and 28th in slugging percenege. That just isn't good enough to win the World Series.
