The 49ers can still win their division.

The NFC west is where the mafia dumps bodies. Now if the Niners could quit beating themselves like PeeWee Herman, we could take the West.

I'm a livid 49er fan and I think they can win the division but I just don't see it happening until next year (again). When it takes Alex Smith 3 or 4 weeks (didn't get to see the first couple of games), it doesn't help out the team. Gore hasn't done anything this year (doesn't help when you can throw the ball either). The best thing going for this team is the defense (they will need another year to mature). It would bring nothing but joy to see them win the division (and some crying from my wife who is a seahawk fan). Next Year is the year for the niners.

Forget next year, this season is just barely to the halfway point. Dont know if you have seen the Niners upcoming schedule but the 4 teams coming up have a combined record of 7-20. Of course we need to get one win first, then we can worry about the next game and so on, but if the Niners can not put it together against the Saints, Falcons, Seahawks and Rams then we have no right even thinking playoffs. But I think Smith and Gore will play this week. Look for V. Davis to have a big game.

Look at those 4 teams now, the Saints have won 2 in a row and are passing and running the ball, the defense is a questionable but Gore has to get the ball more than he has. The Falcons are in disarray, depending on whether Leftwich plays in the second half (just read Harrington is going to start), they will lose but if Harrington plays all day, I will give them that win. The Seahawks have been doing good with their defense...on offense, the running game has been iffy (depending on who you put in, Morris or Alexander). The Rams, for know, another win.

Out of the Niners 326 (offensive) plays this season I have seen about 320 of them. Were are not as hopeless as some pundits would have you believe. We have been the victim of some of the most untimely penalties. For example, in the Ravens game, we had them pinned inside their 10 yard line and on 3rd down they get a pass interference call in their favor, when clearly, our defende didnt even touch the WR, the WR if anything initiated the contact. Minus that call and the game would have been ours

If they are going to win the division, they need to see who they are playing at QB...why are you going to have a 7 step drop (for Dilfer) when you know the Giants (or anyother team) is showing blitz? If they are going to make the playoffs, they need the OC to say to himself, "hey thats not Smith that can scramble out of the pocket and (try to) avoid the sack, we need a 3 step drop and get it out of his hands quickly." Whenever they do that, then they'll be on the winning side of the ball but until then, they aren't going to win the division and the QBs will suffer for that and we'll be out looking for another QB like the rest of our division.

Nolan has led the Niners from a 2-14 team in 05' to a 7-9 team in 06'. With all the new talent we have brought in, N. Clements, P. Willis, D. Jackson, A. Lelie, and others, the only thing stopping us is the mental part of the game.

It doesn't help that our starting QB and TE go down early in the year.

A couple of week to throw a TD (what I wanted to say above).

technically the 49ers still can win their division

October 24, 2007  01:52 PM ET

your right, technically they can but I don't think they will

October 24, 2007  01:56 PM ET

No they cannot. They are not as good as the Seahawks, who unlike the 49ers, actually showed they have some offensive life left with that 33 point outburst.

After V. Davis' lousy performance last week, I look for him to have a big game. One reason I think so is because he is beast, the guy will not go down w/o a fight. Most times when he catches the ball you will see one guy on him then two and then he finally goes down. I love the effort but it worries me a bit, sometimes you just have to concede the tackle and not put yourself in a position to where the defender can knock the ball loose.
Another reason Davis will have a big game is because earlier this year he voiced his opinion, saying something like he wasnt getting the ball enough. Well, he has been given more chances and has failed to doing anything huge, like score, or rack up any huge numbers. I just know this guy wants to prove his critics, myself included, wrong. Look for him to have a huge game. You heard it here first. Boomshakalaka!!!

What happened to 'defense wins championships.' The Niners D, while not overly talented, is capable of keeping them in games. When the Niners get their heads our of their rears, they will look like a whole different team. They must become tougher mentally, since the 3rd game of the year it has been not stop with untimely penalties and blown assignments, things that can be easily corrected, well at least I hope so.

Amen Steelers4lyf39.

JonesyPb, about the 3 step drop, Dilfer and the coaches have already said that is was supposed to be a 3 step drop, Dilfer just blew it, thats why Usi came unblocked. People say Dilfer is supposed to be so freakin smart, a student of the game, pish-posh, he has threaded a few needles but some of his picks and slips are unacceptable, get Smith back in there and things will improve, hopefully it doesnt take him long to get comfortable.

I right their with the both of you, I will go with them to the wire and still defend them when the season's over but I don't think they can win the division this year.

If the father of the only child in Colorado wearing a SF cheerleader outfit says they can't win it......they can't win it.

Nevermind who the Niners have beaten, lol, look who we have lost to, the Steelers, Seahawks, Ravens and Giants, I will argue that Seattle wont make the playoffs, and the Ravens are as inept on offense as we are, right now, still hoping/waiting for a turnaround from the Niners, but my point is we have lost to some good teams. I little more mental toughness and the Niners will claim NFC West supremacy.

I love the niners but hate to say that even if they win that division it doesn't mean much. They might make the playoffs but will lose in round 1. All four of the teams are pretty bad. 49ers need to get Norv Turner back when The chargers fire him.

October 24, 2007  05:58 PM ET

The Niners can do it. But it starts with one win. We will see how they progress this week. Besides the Cheaters and the Colts, this thing is wide open.

October 24, 2007  06:03 PM ET

The Niners couldnt even win a game they held the Ravens to 9 points in AT HOME! No way suddenly Gore and Alex Smith find life beyond Seattle.

Let me tell you about the Ravens game. I watched every play. Yea I know, I should really get out more. Nevertheless, the Niners lost the game but consider this. We were penalized for a pass interference, on a third down play, w/ the Ravens inside their ten, it was clearly a bogus call, clearly. And yea I know great teams can overcome adversity. Admittidly, the Niners are not a great team, a few breaks here and there and we are 4-2.

Look for, Smith to force feed V. Davis, Gore to get 100+, and Lelie to take one deep to the house. Boomshakalaka!!!
