follow the format. Current players ONLY! If you were starting a team for next year, who would you take?
SP- Jake Peavy
SP- CC Sabathia
SP- Josh Beckett
SP- Johan Santana (name another pitcher in the top 8 for all 5 major pitching catagories.)
SP- Eric Bedard (risky? Yes. Riskier than Carmona? NO!)
RP- Rafael Betancourt
RP- Heideki Okajima
RP- Pat Nesheck
RP- Heath Bell
RP- Carlos Marmol
RP- Russ Springer

Ill take Brandon Webb over Erik Bedard. Webb is #2 in IP, tied for the 3rd most wins with an offense that lacks a big threat. He also has big games in that he lead the leagues in SHO and was 2nd in CG, not to mention his 3.01 ERA.

But here is how Webb and Bedard rank up against each other.

IP- Webb
W- Webb
CG- Webb
SHO- Webb
K- Bedard
ERA- Webb
WHIP- Bedard, by .1
K/9- Bedard, by far the better strikeout pitcher of the two

But, I take Webb because he is the best sinkerball pitcher in the game. If I am making a pitching staff, I want a player that can produce a double play, which is what sinkerball pitchers do best.

Webb is also more durable, eating up way more innings and is less injury-prone. 3 out of the past 4 years for Bedard has included injuries of some sort including time on the DL, whereas Brandon Webb has rarely missed a start, and has never been placed on the DL. Webb has started no less than 34 games in a season, except for his rookie year where he started 28 games. A regular fullseason starter usually goes 30+ starts when not injured throughout the entire season. So keep in mind that Bedard has only surpassed the 30+ GS mark once in his career.

I really wouldve liked more than one difference, but Webb isnt even close to Bedard. You failed to mention when comparing stats that Bedard was injured for a long period of time. When Bedard was pitching, he was the sure fire Cy Young. Couldnt even be argued. Most people thought he would get close to 270 Ks. Bedard just has better stuff than Webb. You see his curveball? Its insane.

Besides the fact that Bedard is statistically the better pitcher, he is a lefty which gives him a big advantage. Far less players will steal off of Bedard than they would Webb.

When you're comparing them, you really cant look at IP, SO, CG, or W because Bedard missed a huge number of starts. That basically strips Webb of all of his advantages.

Im willing to take the injury risk for a better pitcher. When your other starters are all Cy Young cantidates and you have a bull pen that is unstoppable you can afford to take a risk. You really just got to forget stats and look at the fact that Bedard has the better stuff and IF healthy, he will be a CY Young cantidate.

You see, thats the thing. Bedard has been an IF his career thus far. I dont want to hear about a for sure Cy Young in the beggining of the season. Thats bs. A couple years ago Garland was the for sure Cy, and this year everyone was sure it would be Beckett when he hadnt had a lost. Regardless about the hardware, Webb is the better OUT pitcher.

The sinkerball pitch it an outpitch, the curveball is not. Bedard might have a sick curveball, but a sick curveball wont be swung at by a good hitter. Adam Laroche even said that in order to make contact with Webb???s sinkerball you have to guess on how many inches to swing under the ball. Also, over their careers, and taking out Bedards not true rookie season, Webb averages 50% more doubleplays, because of the sinkerball.

You argue who has better stuff? Are you going to tell me Webb???s ???stuff??? isn???t simply amazing, especially after not giving up a run after 40+ consecutive innings?

I also want consistency out of my pitcher. Bedard went 7+ innings in only half of his starts in the 2007 season. Webb went 7+ innings into a game every start with the exception of only seven starts.

DUDE WHY DO YOU NEED 7+ INNINGS WITH A BULL PEN LIKE THAT!?! Heres the thing, there was a TD about two months ago where someone said Bedard would be Cy and he won by 15 votes. Im looking for that TD.

Anyway, yes I will tell you Webb's stuff isnt amazing, but here is what I will tell you. HE PITCHES IN THE WEAKEST HITTING DIVISION IN BASEBALL! His numbers are big time thrown off by the fact that he gets a huge help from the teams he plays. Meanwhile Bedard is pitching against the Yanks, Sox, Blue Jays, and a pretty high powered O with the D rays.

Dude, I said throw stats away. they really mean nothing in here. Im saying Bedard is better because he is a better K pitcher and he can definatley consistently hand a lead over to the bull pen. Bedard has the toughest division to pitch in and Webb has the easiest. Simple as that. Plus the 40 straight innings was his turn around. Before that he was average at best and cant really be a cy young cantidate.

Bedard=curveball
Webb= meatball

So now your saying a better K pitcher makes a better baseball pitcher? Are you saying farnsworth is better than maddux simply because of the K factor? Im saying that Webb and Bedard have different styles, and I personally thing Webb's is more effective. Funny how you say the NL East has the worst offence, becasue that was the toughest division this year. No, the Giants dont have a good lineup, but the Diamondbacks, Rockies, and Padres offences arent half bad. They dont get a lot of credit, but they do enough to win. Webb still faces other lineups, so its not like he JUST faces the NL east either.

Why cant I use stats? Because Bedard wasnt durable enough to last an entire season to make his stats comparable? Another reason Webb's better. Not because of the stats soley, but because he can atleast obtain these stats without getting injured!

Webb= meatball? Bedard gave up 7 MORE homeruns this year than Webb, despite pitching almost 50 less innings. So if ur calling Webb a meatball, i dont really know if there is a word to describe Bedard.

I think Bedard should be on this list later in his career, when and if he can prove to be as reliable and durable as Webb has proven to be

October 23, 2007  05:24 PM ET

Ill have to argue this a little bit later. I got a lot of work to do. Is that okay?

October 23, 2007  05:25 PM ET

Thats fine.

October 23, 2007  05:26 PM ET

Earlier you said you had practice.

October 23, 2007  05:26 PM ET

Argh, you added Heath Bell like I said.

October 23, 2007  05:28 PM ET

I had Heath dude. He is my favorite RP, I would NEVER leave him off.

October 23, 2007  05:30 PM ET

You told me to add Ralphy Perez.

October 23, 2007  11:24 PM ET

No, the first list did NOT have Heath Bell.

My comment:

"Where's the Liberty _____."

I didn't want to spell it out for your opponent. Ya know, the Liberty Bell.

Raphael Perez was suggested by someone else and I said, "please tell me that's a joke."

October 24, 2007  12:06 PM ET

are you serious peavyfan? get off my case. "Earlier you said you had practice." Yeah, i had practice but i also had a lot of work i needed to get done. i dont know why you care enough to take note to the slight rewording in my reasoning to answer these TDs later, but its kind of wierd.

October 24, 2007  12:58 PM ET

Chill out dude. I was just kidding.

Webb and Bedard play in 2 different leagues. You can't compare stats. Does Webb face a pitcher in the 9 hole?

October 24, 2007  12:59 PM ET

It's weird that I pay attention and remember what you said earlier?

October 24, 2007  01:38 PM ET

peavy webb wang beckett santana

chamberlin zumaya betencourt okajima

October 24, 2007  01:41 PM ET

LO603 is clueless for having Wang in there ahead of Brad Penny, FYI.

October 24, 2007  01:43 PM ET

Vote to ef cuz awc chickened out and only picked one different player and totally didnt follow the designated format.

October 24, 2007  02:53 PM ET

I thought about Penny Cassidy, but you get a huge advantage from 3 lefties.

October 24, 2007  04:02 PM ET

penny lol wang had nearly 20 wins and he missed 5 starts lol

October 24, 2007  04:15 PM ET

penny has a slightly better era thats about it

October 24, 2007  04:44 PM ET

awc needs to name his team

October 24, 2007  05:19 PM ET

cassidy, i agree with everyone else. i waas gonna argue springer but hes too solid to argue against.

October 24, 2007  05:35 PM ET

peavyfan, what are you talking about you cant argue the two because they pitch different leagues?

the rockies and redsox play different leagues, we argue them?
we argue manning brady, they have different offences?
we argue alot of stuff that isnt exactly the same. thats why we argue them.

October 24, 2007  05:40 PM ET

I'll take Webb over Bedard anyday.
