C THURMAN MUNSON 1B CHRIS CHAMBLISS 2B WILLIE RANDOLPH 3B CRAIG NETTLES SS BUCKY DENT LF LOU PINNIELLA CF MICKY RIVERS RF REGGIE JACKSON DH CLIFF JOHNSON THATS THE STARTING LINE UP I'LL PUT GOOSE GOSSAGE ON THE MOUND..........

Ill take the 1998 New York Yankees. The team wasn???t AMAZING on paper, but they played like it. The team won 114 regular season games, along with sweeping the Padres in the World Series.

Bernie lead the league in BA with a .339 AVG, and Jeter lead the league in runs with 127, along with a .324 BA. The team lead the league as a whole in runs and batting averages.

But they also had amazing pitching. They lead the league in ERA, and had the league leader in Wins. They were lead by David Cone and David Wells, both in the primes of their careers, along with a guy named Any Pettitte. The Yankees also put together a simply amazing bullpen, lead my Mariano Rivera in his prime, with a sub 2 ERA.

Bottom Line: I take the 1998 Yankees

78 Yankees didnt play the padres in the world series if you get my drift and don't forget mr. october. The BRONX WAS BURNIN' oh Billy Martin ! Those were the days and that was the TEAM ! Their LEGACY will never Fade............

No, i dont get your drift. The fact that a TV show came out about that season doesnt mean it was a better team--it means the '78 team had better drama. Your're right, the '78 team had Mr. October, but they didnt have Bernie, Jeter, or Rivera. They finished with 14 less wins, and only 1 starter had a BA over .300. They also didnt finish top in the AL in any category, except they got 3rd in atbats.

remember sparky lyle..........catfish hunter........ron guidry....... only 100 wins cause the competion was more fierce in those days. Do you believe reggie made a wopping 570 thousand that year and under all that drama you speak of george was much more dificult to play for in those days stress not drama anyway im done win or lose i need some 40 year old plus voters i guess we see lol

age of the voter doesnt matter. im a teenager, but i know good and well that the 1998 team was better. I know everyone in that lineup. I know the difference in the timings of the leagues. You guys might have had all those players, but they are great individual players. The 1998 Yankees had a lot of mediocure guys that played AMAZING together as a team. Like a guy named Scott Brosius, the MVP of the WS who was a .200 hitter the year before. Or Chuck Knoblock, a little guy that did all the small things right that season. The 1978 might have had bigger named guys, but the 1998 TEAM played better together.

You're putting a relief pitcher on the mound to start?

October 29, 2007  06:14 PM ET

There is that one Yankees team that won 114 games in the regular season.......

October 29, 2007  06:14 PM ET

WHY are we discussing the Yankees?

Ahem, look at those great SI Photos to the right.

October 29, 2007  06:26 PM ET

Woodson, most of the people on this site won't even recognize half the names you mentioned.

To the contrary Cowboys-Celtics-Chisox. I'm only a teenager and I know that enitre lineup listed. Actually, I had the pleasure to meet Nettles, Gossage, and Chambliss (By the way, I put them in order from grumpiest to nicest). However, I still think the 98 yanks were better.

October 29, 2007  06:41 PM ET

thank you wallace. same goes here except i only met gossage

October 29, 2007  06:42 PM ET

Ef...

Why are you bringing that up? You are an Indians fan? And I do recall the Sox beating them in the ALCS? And I do recall that the Indians havent won a WS since 1948. Right?

And I didnt bring up the Sox b/c I think they are better than the Yankees teams being discussed in this TD.

Maybe you guys are just being silly or you are blind..."Red Sox Sweep the Series".

October 29, 2007  06:43 PM ET

The '98 team won more games, but position by position you'd have a hard time arguing they were "better". They were different eras and the '98 team faced a watered down MLB compared to '78.

October 29, 2007  06:46 PM ET

"I'm only a teenager and I know that enitre lineup listed."

If you know it, then why did you ask him why he had a reliever starting? Gossage was a starter in 1976 so it certainly would be a stretch for him to start a game in '78.
