NASCAR is a OVERRATED sport.

While NASCAR has grown over the years into a very popular sport, not everywhere is NASCAR is popular.

Take New York for insistant. Nobody cares about NASCAR here. All they care about Is Baseball and Football. NASCAR tried to build a track in Staten Island, But the city council says no, which means they don't want any part of NASCAR. To me there is no interest in NASCAR here in New York.

The TV ratings for NASCAR are down the last 2 years. The races in California Speedway hadn't even sold out. They put 2 races there because the track is near the Los Angeles area, and they hadn't even sold out their 2 races.

The NFL is the No.1 most popular sport in the U.S.A. Baseball is 2nd, and then everybody else. NASCAR is in the middle of the pack as far as all the other sports.

The fact that you don't like NASCAR, and your friends don't like NASCAR does not make it an overrated sport. Who cares what people from New York like? You're home to the overrated Yankees.

Hundreds of thousands of people go to NASCAR races every week, merchandise sales are through the roof and with Dale Jr., Jimmy Johnson and Jeff Gordon on the same team next year, interest will definitely be up.

Sure NASCAR peaked, but they peaked really high and now they are tapering off, but staying at a very high level. Forget just the Nextel Cup series, the Busch Series brings in hundreds of thousands of fans as well.

Obviously the NFL and MLB are more popular sports, however, you never made an argument that NASCAR is not number three and if NASCAR is number three over the NBA and the NHL, which it is, then it definitely cannot be "overrated".

One of these days you may figure out that there are cities outside of New York and Los Angeles.

NASCAR put a 2nd race at the California Speedway on Labor Day weekend because the track is near the Los Angeles area. They also take away a race date at Darlington Raceway in the process. As a result the California Speedway can't seen to sell out the race. NASCAR on its way to being popular has gotten away from their tradition of the past. As a result the sport has become popular, but the traditon has been kick to the crub.

My point is, that not being able to sell out a stadium that will hold 200,000 plus fans, but still selling a few hundred thousands tickets and having lines five miles long at merchandise trailers still makes NASCAR a wildley popular sport.

If NASCAR couldnt' sell tickets in the Los Angeles Area, then they wouldn't be putting extra races there, I guess you walked into your own argument there. So what is it, they cannot sell tickets in LA or they are doing so well they added an extra race in LA? You cannot have it both ways.

The point is NASCAR is selling out their tradition to market the sport. Tracks like Darlington Raceway, Rockingham Speedway, etc. are being phrase out of the sport. In the process, NASCAR has build tracks in Calfornia, Texas, Illinois, and Kansas to replace those tracks and are trying to build tracks in Washington and New York. Bottom line is NASCAR is selling out their tradition. And because of that NAASCAR is a second tier sport compare to the NFL, Baseball, and Basketball.

You're argument is that NASCAR is growing. They are expanding to reach out to more fans. Just because they aren't refusing to adapt to a growing fan base does not mean they are selling out. When the NFL expands into new cities that doesn't mean they are selling out. Did the NFL sell out when it expanded from the original teams to meet a growing fan base? Did the NHL sell out when they expanded from the original 8 to meet a growing fan base?

Speaking of selling out, you just sold out your own argument. You're trying to tell their fan base is dwindling, yet you accuse them of selling out to accomadate a growing fan base. You cannot have it both ways.

NASCAR is growing, their fan base is growing, their influence is expanding, they are increasingly more popular. Take a trip out of New York occasionally and come visit the real world.

Uh...so no New York Nascar - Nascar not popular? Granted, I am not a Nascar junkee but I know far too many people that are. I hold my vote in abeyance until more argument is done, but really, not a great opener here...

Any chance these "professional" drivers who go round and round in circles all day long can learn to make a RIGHT hand turn? And don't tell me about Watkins Glen or some other road/street course.

People watch Nascar for the crashes. So give the fans what they want and let the cars crash into the wall on the DRIVER'S side for once.

"Take New York for insistant. Nobody cares about NASCAR here. All they care about Is Baseball and Football"

So is basketball overrated also because no one in New York cares about it?

Nascar might not be overrated but it is boring as ****. I give you my vote on principal. It is amazing what they do if they have to take a dump though

Vote for Mike,
Aren't you glad you live in this country and can pick what sports you watch?
Why ruin it for those who like it.

Millions of people care.

November 12, 2007  02:17 PM ET

fastest growing sport cant be considered overrated..

November 12, 2007  02:18 PM ET

just because you dont like it doesnt mean its overrated

November 12, 2007  02:22 PM ET

Wouldn't even consider it a sport. It's just another opportunity for hillbillies to get drunk and routy and show off their extreme mullets.

November 12, 2007  02:23 PM ET

I'd rather watch bicycle racing than Nascar

November 12, 2007  02:30 PM ET

NASCAR isn't a sport. It's a motor vehicle competition. Throw a right hand turn in there and then maybe I'll watch the last 2 laps. That's all you really need anyway.
