Top 3 RBs ever in no particular order

1.Joe Brown
2.Walter Payton
3.Emmit Smith

I'll put mine in order.

1. Jim Brown (I know who you were saying)
2. Walter Payton
3. Barry Sanders

ya sorry I meant Jim Brown sorry.Barry Sanders and Emmit Smith were both really good and I think this is a very hard desicion. But, I feel like Emmit Smith is just a slight bit better.Next argument will look up stats

Emmitt was on a really great Cowboys team during the 90's but who would believe Barry would do the things that he did during his tenure with the team. With ZERO QB help (Erik Kramer, Rodney Peete, Dave Krieg, Scott Mitchell and Charlie Batch), he was able to rush for no less than 1,100 (and the year he only did that, he only played in 11 games that year) every season he played and with the supporting cast that went to 5 playoff games and 1 win.

Emmit has 65 more TD.He also has 3,000 more yards and 3 more super bowl rings than Barry

Lets see, it took Emmitt almost 2 1/2 years to finally pass Barry in rushing yards, what did you expect. Just imagine what Barry would have done if he continued with his career, probably would have never got to the SB unless he signed with another team but he at least helped the Lions stay contenders through the years he was in.

Emmitt is a good back and he is guaranteed HOFer, but Barry was elite compared to Emmitt and without winning a SB, he will be forever known the best.

Emmit Smith was only good because he played over 15 years.

November 29, 2007  06:30 PM ET

Sanders retired early. Smith played on excellent teams, while Sanders played on .... well.. the Lions. Sanders did more with less.

November 29, 2007  06:31 PM ET

"Barry Sanders would of had rushing title if he didn't retire early because of the Lion's lousy team."

If ifs and butts were candy and nuts every day would be Christmas. Speculating on what he MIGHT have done doesn't make him better. Bo Jackson MIGHT have shattered all kinds of records if he didn't get hurt. Ditto Earl Campbell.

November 29, 2007  06:31 PM ET

efbasketball you my friend are an idiot for that statement! Emmitt was a leader on and off the field and played heart and oh ya has 3 super bowl rings and the rushing title. I know I know had Barry not quit he would have it but you know what Barry is a QUITER and Emmit is a LEADER!

November 29, 2007  06:32 PM ET

the lions had like a really good team in the 80s.and so did the cowboys but the cowboys did not have the same blocking. The cowboys blocking was worst then the lions back then.

November 29, 2007  06:33 PM ET

I am an idiot because of my sloppy typing!

"Emmit Smith was only good because he played over 15 years."

What kind of sense does that make? He was only good because he played a long time? Would you say the same thing about Jerry Rice, too? How about Brett Favre?

Emmitt is #1 in career rushing yards and rushing TDs, #2 in career yards from scrimmage and career total TDs. Smith had 65 more TDs and 3k more yards than Barry, also had 3 more super bowl rings. Both won 4 rushing titles. Emmitt's longevity is what gives him the nod over Sanders. We'll never know what Barry "might" have done if he didn't retire, so that's a moot point.

Sanders > Smith

"the lions had like a really good team in the 80s.and so did the cowboys but the cowboys did not have the same blocking. The cowboys blocking was worst then the lions back then."

Dumb post of the day? Sanders was drafted in 89, Smith in 90.

November 29, 2007  06:49 PM ET

Wow, Cowboys I never thought you were homer. Hold on, I gotta get a comeback together.

November 29, 2007  06:51 PM ET

and the 90s

November 29, 2007  06:52 PM ET

Sanders had 99.8 rushing yards a game which I think is only surpassed by Jim Brown.

5.0 per carry with a terrible O line

19.1 receiving yards per game.

Emmit had 81 yards a game and w WEAK 4.2 yards a pop.

What aren't you seeing here?

November 29, 2007  06:55 PM ET

I am blinded by Emmits SB rings and gleam off the trophy he made for himself for most rushing yards ever. Kinda hard to see with all that bling.

November 29, 2007  07:01 PM ET

Always loved Barry, he juked your socks off.

November 29, 2007  07:03 PM ET

"5.0 per carry with a terrible O line "

Uh, your memory of the Lions isn't very good. They had a fantastic line in front of Barry.

Emmitt played too long, no doubt about it. His last few years dragged his averages down. When both were in their prime they combined to win 8 rushing titles in 8 years, 4 each. From that perspective, there is little difference. It's the career achievements that give Emmitt the edge.

November 29, 2007  07:26 PM ET

I have no memory of that, everyone says it so I go with it.

C-C-C may I ask you WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT!?!?!?!?!?!!?

in his last 5 out of 6 years he had over 1,450 yards rushing and 2 seasons over 1,700. His averages weren't dragged down, they were raised dramatically.

Wait, I was looking at it backwards, you were right. Why must nfl.com trick me? They start with the last year first and work their way down to the first? Yeah, that makes sense.
