The #1 Best and Worst Sports predictions.

OK, originally, I was going to say that Joe Namath's prediction in Super Bowl III, that the Jets would win over the really HUGELY favored Colts was the best prediction that came to fruition.

Then my phone rang and my dad and I got to discussing what I was thinking and he said and I quote "Are you insane? You don't remember, you were just a baby, but it has to be Muhammed Ali when he bet the house he would beat Sonny Lister, Deborah (thats what he calls me when he's upset with me), That was a HUGE upset. ". After I hung up, I did indeed look it up and I have to say, my dad wins hands down. It was indeed the prediction of the century. (Im glad Im not TD'ing with him).

The worst has to be Tony Pena predicting the Royals would win the central division and they ended up being (yes, I knew the prediction but had to look up their record) - 58-104

On the best prediction ever, I'll make the argument for Namath. That's the one that defined an athlete, a generation, and also indirectly led to one of the best Simpsons episodes ever, with the comparison between Namath's cocky wavy long hair and Unitas' buzz cut (yes, Earl Morrall started for the Colts, but the divide between the old school NFL and the new school AFL was bridged with one fateful prediction).

As for worst, Matt Hasselbeck for "We'll take the ball, and we're gonna score." Well, if he meant Al Harris, then yes, Al Harris scored. Too bad Harris played for the Packers.

I said in the beginning, I was going to make the argument for Namath. But if you go and look at the history of sports, you will see that Namath's prediction in a "game" that was virually a baby in the grand scheme of organized sporting events was nothing compared to Ali's prediction that he would beat Lister. Nothing.
As for your argument about the Simpsons, thats not an argument over sports, thats an argument on "The Effect Animation Has on the Sports World."
Different td for a different day.

Hasslebeck saying "We'll take the ball and we're gonna score" is a really good one. I almost considered that. But the fact is, it was a playoff game, he threw a pick and they lost.
That was in an OT game with the game tied

For Pena to make such a bold prediction before the season even starts is a far worse prediction.

On "The Simpsons" reference, my larger point was that the effect that the prediction had, that the freewheeling Joe Namath was so cocky in his resolve about defeating the mighty Colts that he was willing to predict it before the game, along with the effect that game had on sports in general, was what put it over the top. My only argument against Ali is that Ali generally thought he'd win every fight he was in, and, as his wikipedia article notes about his early career,

"Ali built a reputation by correctly predicting the round in which he would "finish" several opponents, and by boasting before his triumphs."

So Ali's a professional when it comes to good predictions. Namath had one that is practically legend at this point.

As for Hasselbeck vs. Pena, Hasselbeck was Favre's backup for the first two years of his career, and therefore had some desire to particularly beat the Pack (and prove his worth). This was Miyagi vs. Daniel-San, and Daniel-San flinched. Of course, Hasselbeck has turned out to be a very good QB, but he's still got this moment and one terrible prediction in the heat of the moment. As for the Royals, even when they're good the expectations aren't usually high

Again, I said Namath was an excellent choice, one I probably would have started with. Liston was a much larger favored opponent vs Ali than the Jets were against the Colts. This was SB III - The merger was barely off the ground and not the powerhouse it is today. Boxing on the other hand was a HUGELY followed sport. When Ali made that prediction, it was on the front page of local papers! (thats according to my dad and internet searches to confirm).. Ali was given NO chance to win.

As for the worst, again, I remind you that the game Matt said that in was a PLAYOFF game against the Packers? and he made the idiotic prediction before OT started. The game was tied. It could have gone either way. First team to score wins. Its a no brainer. I hate the OT in the NFL. It shoud be a 15 min. OT.
BUT., again, it was a PLAYOFF game, he made the statement, he threw a INT and he lost.

Pena had the audacity (kind of like Kitna this season and his 10 wins) that in his 1st season (correct me if thats wrong) - the Royals would WIN the Central Division.
They ended up 58-104. THAT was a very very VERY bad prediction. By a 1st year manager.

ahhh jaysus
why me?

sorry soxfan. I put this out before and someone else accepted with the argument "women like men" and then forfeited. He then accepted this one.. I guess a MOD got to him.
My apologies.

Ben, that same guy with a misspelled name took the 2nd try I put out.
I have no idea how someone else got this..there must have been mod intervention.

He just picked it up and declined, Kp. Hopefully this guy will give a legit response.

Report Offensive Comment

Oh, and it's Sonny Liston. Not Lister

Report Offensive Comment

Sorry. It just took me a moment to put my arguments together

Hm, I like the Worst Prediction from soxfan...I remember that one...

Report Offensive Comment

That was a good one, soxfan. Matt Hasselbeck became That Assolebeck in a no time flat.

Report Offensive Comment

sorry Noon.. typo.. its dark in here..

Report Offensive Comment

again, please read the arguments before getting all emotional and voting...lol

I'd say your worsts are close, but Ali's predict gets a slight edge. Liston was considered an inhuman frankenstein. The Colts were merely tough guys.

Report Offensive Comment

Liston was an absolute powerhouse. Noone gave Ali a shot at winning. Noone. If you dont believe me, I will give you my dads number. I spent 20 mins listening to his narrative of the fight....

I was (II ) close to going with Messier but Namath and Ali were much better choices. Oh how the Bruins hated the Rangers...
