The Cubs have a good chance of winnig the division no other team has tried to make a big aquisition like the cubs have.

No other team has tried to make a big aquisition like the Cubs have?

Look at the Astros offseason! They brought in Miguel Tejada AND Jose Valverde. They brought in Kaz Matsui, and the widely unknown Michael Bourne. The Astros were arguably the most active team on the markey this year, while the Cubs merely signed an unproved Japanese League player. He has good numbers for sure, but no transaction is ever a sure deal from the Japanese Leagues to the MLB.

Im not saying the Astros will win the division, but they certainly have made more big aquisitions than any other team in the central.

And, just to let you know, every team right now statistically has the same chance to win a division, everyone has the same records, everything right now is just speculation.

The Cubs have a good chance at winning the division, yes, but so does every other team in the central because it is so weak. With an exception with the Pirates, this division is up for grabs.

Hey The Astros have gotten Tejada but what will he do? Bring down the team with negative publicity. Kaz Matsui had a contract year. The Cardinals must not want the division because they got rid of Edmonds. The Pirates are the Pirates and have done nothing. The Brewers did get Gagne but what did he do with the Red Sox???? Oh yea nothing! And what else they lost their solid closer Corrdero

if this arguement is purely based on offseason spending theres no way the cubs should be kinged already. they overpaid for an unreliable, over erratic pitcher that has anger management issues. NO ONE KNOWS HOW JAPANESE PLAYERS WILL TRANSLATE IN THE MLB. he could be a bust for all we know, he could get booed out of wrigley like jaque jones did. dont forget cubs nation was obsessed with his signing too. lilly is a decent pitcher, but marquis marshall and hill are not stellar to so the least. with an up and coming brewers team, that made solid improvements to their bullpen, they are just as favored as the cubs should be right now.

wow Ted lilly was one of the most consistent pitchers last year and year zambrano may be erratic and crazy but thats what makes him Zambrano thats what got him 18 wins last year. I think that Fukudome made the Japan Team in the WBC oviously he must be good 4 gold gloves and 2 batting ****..... He is a mixture of Ichiro and Hediki Matsui

what about kazaa ishii? or how about hideki irabu, and kei igawa? Dice-K isnt the god they expected him to be either. the list goes on and on with foreign players that didnt translate well in the MLB. The point is, all of this is speculation until we actually see him play. Zambrano may have compiled 18 wins, but he also had 13 losses to go along with that, not to mention his 4 ERA. Lilly is consistant? In his 5 years as a starter hes had ERAs ranging from 3.80 to 5.60. Hes pitched 200+ innings once. He has a good year last year, but by no means is Ted Lilly a consistent pitcher.

Do you two enjoy your lives as TD trolls? The rest of us find it tiresome.

captain admiral, im saying that other teams in the central have made bigger strides. if you read my comment below that i said "im not saying the astros will win the division"

December 19, 2007  12:33 PM ET

porkins are you talking to me?

but i do think houston has the offense to win this weak division admiral. our rotation isnt as bad as people think, with backe coming back from an injury--not many people know about him.

our lineup has speed with bourne and matsuit at the top
followed by hunter pence, lance berkman, carlos lee, and miguel tejada--thats a solid middle of the lineup
then we have ty wiggington whose good for 20 hr and 80 rbis and a pretty good rookie catcher--towles.

yea last year when the brewers were serging i said the cubs would win and everyone made fun of me so. You will all see at the end of the season who will be on top. THE CUBBIES

Dodgers svck.

kaz matsui has been an absolute bust from the beginning and valverde had one good year and is a complete jerk on the mound....he will be a one hit wonder i promise.....tejada is not good anymore. he is on the decline and is a cheater as well. he probably wont hit more than 20 homers and drive in more than 80 runs. matsui will get booed. the cubs will win the division. they have the best lineup with the most clutch hitters. they have the best starting rotation...and they have the best bullpen especially with marmol as the closer.

cubs=Wrigleyville=****=no division win=maybe wildcard=go whitesox

December 19, 2007  01:21 PM ET

I like what the Astros have done in the offseason, and the Cubs are no more likely to win their division next year as this year as I dont see the Cubs pitching getting them 85-90 wins necessary to win this division.

December 19, 2007  03:22 PM ET

Cubs pitching was 2nd in the NL last year and they won the division despite an off year from their ace. They're still the favorite to win the division at this point, but awc's arguments are better here.

December 19, 2007  03:27 PM ET

No, the Tigers were most active, so far as well...

Gotten:

Jacque Jones
Edgar Renteria
Miguel Cabrera
Dontrelle Willis

I am just saying, the Astros can have an argument about most active, AWC, nothin' against you.

I'm not sure if Porkins is a Brewers fan, but he's arguing AGAINST the Brewers winning the NL Central.

Cubs are the best on paper right now. Astros have been active, but still need some SP. Without that they are Cincy, all offense no pitching. Pitching was the difference in the division last year. The Cubs were best at it so they won in the end.
