Simple, construct the All-Star team in the West, five starters and five reserves. Do this based on performance, not hype (in other words, not how it will probably happen).

Starters:

C- Yao Ming
PF- Carlos Boozer
SF- Josh Howard
SG- Kobe Bryant
PG- Steve Nash

Bench
Carmelo Anthony
Allen Iverson
Shawn Marion
Dirk Nowitski
Chris Kaman

I only have one disagreement. Iverson does not belong up there. His numbers are solid, but Im going to gove some love to CP3. Chris Paul averages 21 ppg along with 10 assists, 3 steals and 4 rebounds a game. Hes single handedly carried his team to a better record than the Nuggets, where Iverson can rely on players like Camby and Carmelo. AI does score 5 more points a game, but manages 2.5 less assists per game despite having more weapons. Not to mention CP3 outrebounds and outsteals AI. CP3 also has a better FG%, 3PT%, and FT%. He is shooting 90% from the line.

I was hoping for more than a one player difference, but whatever.

Iverson vs. CP3.

Iverson, as previously mentioned, is a better scorer. He is also a very good passer, getting 7.5 APG despite not being a PG. CP3 doesn't exactly kill Iverson in any statistical area. He has a significant lead in assists (makes sense because he is a PG and Iverson is a SG), but he leads in steals by only .4, and their field goal percentage is virtually identical. Paul also has more than a full foul per game extra than Iverson.

Iverson having other stars on his team actually detracts from his individual stats. Remember he was perennially the leagues leading scorer and top ten in assists before being traded. If you watch the games he is still usually the best player on the court, he just has more star power to spread the ball with. That's why his numbers are less.

Iverson is still the best one on one player in the world, it isn't his fault he plays on a good team.

Iverson is behind CP3 in every single category except PPG, where he only trails by a couple of points. No if's and's or but's about that. CP3 is a head of Iverson in 7 out of 9 categories, the other Iverson is ahead in is blocks, where he avereages .1 a game and CP3 averages 0 BBG.

CP3 deserves this partially because he is a better overall player than Iverson, and because he is doing it with less people. Iverson's job has been made a lot easier with Carmelo by his side, Camby in the post, and even JR Smith's athleticism. CP3 does not have that luxury. The Hornets are T-5 in the West mainly because what CP3 can do. CP3 comes in night in and night out averaging a double double, whereas Iverson is more inconsistant. Iverson has games where he jacks up shot after shot after shot, and other games where he plays well as a teammate.

My main point is that CP3 is better thatn Iverson in 7 out of 9 major categories, and is leading his team to a better record despite having worse players. If that doesnt validate an All-Star spot than I dont know what does.

Iverson's job is easier with Carmelo on his side, yes. But that also takes about eight ppg away from him (roughly how much his scoring dropped when he was traded). I agree that CP3 carries his team much more than Iverson does, but Iverson is still a better player than CP3. They are of roughly equal passing, defensive, and rebounding skill (though CP3 is a better rebounder). However, Iverson is far ahead of CP3 in scoring ability. In fact, Iverson is still one of the best scorers in the NBA, not is terms of ppg but in terms of scoring ability. He belongs in the All-Star game ahead of Paul.

Better Passer= CP3
Better Defender= tie
Better Scorer= Iverson

However, CP3 creates much much more opportunites for his teammates to score with his passing ability. No, it is unlikely that CP3 will put up the occasional 40 point game like Iverson, but CP3 does constantly hit the 15 assist mark. That translates to atleast 30 points by other teammates, and thats only assuming none of his assists are three pointers. That also not counting his 21 ppg average. So, with the 5 less points per game shooting wise, CP3 makes up for what he brings to his game with his teammates. CP3 is the leader of a better team, thanks only to him. CP3 is better than Iverson is right now. That is why he deserves a spot over Iverson.

Tim Duncan and Dirk Nowitzki will be starters no matter what they're stats are. Vote goes to....no one.

haha sorry i took it but i decided not to argue it because i didnt wanna just argue over the bench players. I agree with aswc though. Chris paul has to be there. It could be argued that he should start over Nash.

He argues with a guy on the bench...

What the heck?

detroit fan:
please tell me a better center than yao that plays in the west.
please tell me a sf that deserves in more than josh howard.
please tell me a player better than kobe.
please tell me a more complete PG than nash.

The only one i could have argued was boozer vs. Duncan, but i know duncan has been in and out of the lineup with injuries.

December 20, 2007  04:22 PM ET

I was hoping for more of a difference. I purposely left off players like Amare Stoudamire, Tracy McGrady and Baron Davis so that there could be more difference.

December 20, 2007  04:37 PM ET

Nothin' against you, but I was just about to say, if you can't come up with many differences, as you stated, then I would let the TD go.

December 20, 2007  04:39 PM ET

T-Mac is always injured. He leaves games early all the time, I cant remember the last time he had a dominating game, not just a dominating quarter. I would ave argued D-Will before Davis, but couldnt find anyone to kick off. I was thinking of argueing Amare vs. Dirk, but Dirk has better overall numbers.

December 20, 2007  04:42 PM ET

detroitfan, i found a difference that i wanted to argue, so i argued. if farve wants ill glady draw so he can argue this with someone else that wants to argue it more than i do, i dont have a problem with that

Id put Matrix in the starting lineup at SF over Howard

Josh: 49% fg, 21 pt, 7 reb, 2 ast, 0.7 stl, 0.5 blk
Shawn: 52% fg, 16 pt, 11 reb, 1.7 ast, 2.3 stl, 1.7 blk

and while Marion is on the court he guards the other teams best non-center player the entire game.
