The 1972 Gold medal Basketball game between the USA and Soviet Union was totally fix.

The US had 50-49 lead with 3 seconds left. twice the Soveits had chances to win the game but failed. But then the guy in charge of FIBA, R. William Jones, told the referees to put 3 seconds back on the clock, even thought he is not allow to interene during the game.

The Soviets went on to win the game 51-50 on a last second lay-up.

The U.S. refuse to accept the Silver medal because they got screw. I can't blame then for it.

To me that game was a total fix job.

It seems like they did everything they could to help the Soviets win that game.

You can't tell me that game was totally fix.

I can tell you that the game wasn't totally fixed. In fact I can do any damn thing I want. But since YOU are making the accusations of a game being fixed, then YOU need to provide some evidence.
So far you've only told us what we already know. That it was a controversial ending to the game. But there are controversial endings to games every year. Where is your evidence that it was fixed?

How about the guy in charge of FIBA telling the refs to put 3 seconds back on the clock? He should not be allow to do that.

That is not strong evidence of a fix. That could be incompetence, confusion, miscommunication, maybe the guy had a hangover or any number of things other than a fix.
To make an accusation of a fix, you need to provide ALOT more evidence than that.
If you were a prosecutor a judge would be laughing at you right now.

3 times the Soviets had a chance to win the game. And on the 3rd try the Soviets won the game. They should not had 3 chances to win the game. The refs well probably told before the game to help the Soviets win the game. How is it that the Soviets got 3 chances to win the game, and on the 3rd try they did.

"The refs well probably told..."? That's you big bombshell? Are you kidding me with this ****?
1st of all it's were, not well. 2nd, don't go in to a career in law. If I was presiding over your case I would likely send you out and never allow you to return to my courtroom again except to sweep it with a broom.
You have to provide the burden of proof. Otherwise there is reasonable doubt. Right now, the doubt is so reasonable that it's having a cup of coffee and treating us to a big lunch... you're not invited.

In any debate, the burden of proof lies on the side of the affirmative. The negative position only needs to sow reasonable doubt... and Ruby has already done that with this first argument without making any new arguments. It indeed was suspicious, but I would like at least a quotation or at least som anecdotal evidence to consider as potential proof...

I will reserve judgment now, until I see YDT's rebuttal...

If the 1972 Gold Medal game was fixed, so was the 1980 Miracle on Ice Game.

December 21, 2007  10:11 PM ET

Not fixed by the players, but by the refs.

But the USA should've done a better job on defense. 50% refs, 50% players not playing hard enough.

sorry I butchered your name.

December 21, 2007  10:20 PM ET

It wasn't fixed. If it was, do you think the refs would wait for some incredible play to happen 3 seconds before the game was over to play their hand?

December 21, 2007  10:37 PM ET

Wow...a lot of guys here are still pretty pissed about losing a basketball game 35 years ago to a country that doesn't exist anymore. Sad.

December 21, 2007  10:39 PM ET

The evidence presented here is simply too weak to condemn FIBA or the referees in the game. Certainly there were -- and obviously still are -- suspicions about the validity of the contest; the fact remains that no proof has come out here or anywhere else to convict, without doubt, the authorities that be.

That said, I think you could go further with how you rebut the opponent's arguments, Ruby... but you did enough to get my vote...

December 21, 2007  10:59 PM ET

There was nothing to rebut, Bigalke. This guys arguments were weaker than lemonade without the lemons.

December 21, 2007  11:04 PM ET

the person making the td makes a statement hoping the person responding would argue..telling him he needs more evidence isn't defending the opposite side of the argument...

the people telling who needs stronger fact and arguments are the voters....

maybe thats why ruby sits at a 40 some %in TDS

Or maybe it's because of spiteful jackaasses who vote regardless of the topic like you, steveo.

First salvo in the rise of basketball internationally. It was a bitter pill to swallow for the USA at the time. Good analogy re: 1980 Miracle on Ice.

It???s a structured debate between two Fans. Each Fan gets three turns to make an argument and prove their case. Other Fans can comment on the Throwdown and vote for a winner.

there you go...theres the definition straight from fan nation...im voting based on the arguments at hand...weather you want to call me spiteful for thinking that you have no valid case in your arguments...thats your problem...not mine.

My case was that he had no evidence. And he didn't.
