Should the Cowboys rest Tony Romo and his receivers against the Redskins?

OK, let me just make this clear on what the title is saying. This is about whether the Cowboys should rest Tony Romo and his skill position players in week 17. Not whether they should rest the defense, or the O-line. Just those guys.

I say they should NOT rest Romo and his receivers. Why? Well, they need to get on the same page!

Normally, this decision would be a cinch. The Cowboys were healthy almost all year, but have been ravaged by injuries the last two weeks. Now that homefield is clinched, rest everyone right?

I say no. If TO were healthy and Terry Glenn had been around all year, I'd say to rest everybody. But not this time. TO is out with an injury, and Glenn will be making his first appearance ALL year. I say to play Romo because these guys need to get on the same page. TO has a high ankle sprain. He SHOULD be back for the Cowboys' first playoff game, but what if he isn't? The Cowboys will be playing: A guy who has yet to play a game this year, a 7th round pick three years ago, and two undrafted free agents from last season.

Instead of blowing the game off, Romo needs this game to get on track with the finally healthy Terry Glenn and his slew of inexperienced backups

Well, you are talking about skill position players only. So QB, WR, RB, TE, right?

Obviously you sit T.O. no matter what. The injury is day to day and it's very likely he "could" play against the 'Skins if the game mattered, but no way you take that risk in a meaningless contest, so he's out.

Crayton has to play, at least some. The options behind him are Sam Hurd and Austin Miles.

Glenn will only play on a few series to get back into the swing of things. They won't be taking any big risks by playing him a substantial amount of snaps in his first game of the year.

Romo still has some lingering effects from the hand injury and won't play much beyond the 1st QTR in my estimation. Brad Johnson hasn't played all year, you'd like to get him some game action before the playoffs just in case.

Witten is a tough SOB that will have to be dragged off the field in this one, but I'd still be surprised to see him play much more than a half.

Barber/Smith really isn't much other option here but to let them play.

To answer your question, Dallas should and likely will treat this game like a pre-season game. No, they shouldn't be taking unnecessary risks in a meaningless game.

I didn't really mean running back so much, but I think they only have one other back on the active roster outside of Jones/ Barber (that would be Tyson Thompson), so they really have no choice on whether or not to play those two a little.

As for TO, yes, sit him. I was under the impression he was already ruled OUT for the game against Washington, so I assumed he wasn't in it.

I'm talking about, basically, Romo/ Glenn/ Witten/ Fasano/ Crayton.

Really, the key to this whole thing is Tony Romo. Romo hurt his thumb, and really, he has no reason to play this game. However, Owens is no sure thing for at least one round of the playoffs, maybe even longer (though I doubt it). This leaves only Patrick Crayton among the wide receivers with whom Romo has played with extensively this season. Obviously, you DON'T want to go into the playoff game with Witten, Crayton, and the rest of those guys if TO is out. It is to easy. To make things better, Romo needs to play in a real game situation with those guys, just to make sure they know what they're doing.

Having your top WR out is bad enough. If his undrafted replacements struggle and cause a playoff loss due to inexperience, that is just AWFUL

Well, Fasano is a backup TE. He WILL get more playing time in this game because Witten is going to get less.

Romo isn't going to learn anything about the young receivers in a meaningless game against the Redskins that he hasn't learned in practice. Glenn just isn't going to be pressed in his first game back. In fact, if he has any setback at all this week he won't play. There is no way the Cowboys are going to risk anything with Terry in a meaningless game.

There are different theories about momentum and what not, but to me there is no way you risk your most important player, who has just recently suffered an injury to his throwing hand, in a meaningless game. I'm far more concerned with Romo being healthy for the divisional playoff game than I am finding out if he and Austin Miles are on the same page on a skinny post.

Other considerations that play a role in the skill position players seeing alot of action. The OL has been nicked up a bit the last few weeks as well. Davis and Gurode both suffered fairly tough injuries and Flozell has been banged up as well. Gotta get those road ginders some rest too. Do you want to see a lot of Romo behind the second team OLine? I sure don't.

You got me with the O-line thing. didn't think of that.

Good luck.

Glad a fellow Cowboys fan took this, instead of some moron

That should say Barber/Jones, of course. ;-)

I say they should. :)

I say start the skill players, but they shouldn't see the other side of halftime.

That's exactly what I'm expecting they'll do BS, but I doubt most of 'em even make it to half time...

Shake off the dust and them put 'em back in their pens...
