ONLY ACCEPT THIS IF YOU THINK HE (BILL) SHOULD HAVE WON.
Bill should not have won COY and this is coming from a Patriots fan. Yes, he had an undefeated regular season, but everyone expected the Patriots to have a great season. Not many expected this, but he still didn't deserve this award. McCarthy is a much better selection than Bill. No one expected Green Bay to be the #2 seed in the NFC. This entire team has exceeded expectations. Favre has played great, Ryan Grant has come out of nowhere and played well, and the defense is doing well too.
Coach of the Year should go to the coach who did the most to surpass expectations. That's McCarthy. Bill exceeded expectations, but not by much. Mike's team was well past expectations. Dr. Z predicted the Packers were going 6-10. Now they are 13-3 with a first round bye.
Mac: The Day That Never Comes said 01/04, 12:30 AM
In the minds of the voters having Bill Belichick win was what needed to happen. For the first time since 1972, a team went undefeated. Belichick was the coach. Regardless of the fact that he has Tom Brady as his QB, and such star studded WR's at his disposal, Belichick is the man at the reigns of one of the best NFL teams in recent memory.
McCarthy and his Packers have stunned many people with their phenomenal regular season. Going 13-3 is fantastic, and should be looked upon with great respect. BUT, if the voters had looked upon it with enough respect to award him as the NFL's Coach of the Year, it would cause an uproar due to the fact of what Belichick accomplished.
Belichick was part of history thus he deserves the award. And like I'd say in the argument for Favre over Brady for the NFL's MVP, any other season and McCarthy gets the nod. Belichick deserved to be the COY because of his accomplishments and the fact that if he didnt, it would look absolutely dreadful on the part of the voters and the NFL due to his involvement in history.

Even though Bill and the Patriots went undefeated, they were expected to do extremely well and earn the #1 seed in the AFC. The Packers, on the other hand, weren't expected to make the playoffs. Now they are #2 in the NFC.
Past coaches have won the award for overachieving and surpassing expectations. Just look at the last two from New England to win coach of the year; Bill in 2003 and Bill Parcells in 1994. In both of those years, those teams weren't expected to do as well as they did. In 2002 the Patriots were 9-7 and missed the playoffs entirely. The next year, Bill brings them back to the Superbowl. In 1993 the Pats were 5-11. The next season Parcells brought them back tot he playoffs after many consecutive dreadful seasons.
Last season it was Sean Payton whos New Orleans Saints came out of nowhere and dominated the NFC. Everyone expected them to be utterly terrible like they usually were, but they succeeded and played hard and won games and THAT is why he won Coach of the Year.

Maybe I didnt make myself clear...
You are correct. Mike McCarthy did a wonderful job in Green Bay this season. No one(maybe other than Packers fans) expected them to go 13-3 and clinch the 2nd seed in the NFC. No one expected Brett Favre to play like he's 28 at 38 nor did they see young Ryan Grant coming at the RB spot. Yes, coaches have won in the past based off of overachieving and surpassing the expectations layed out for them before the season began. Mike McCarthy deserves to get some accolades for his accomplishments. Yes.
But not in 2007-2008. As I said, if not for Bill Belichick and his Patriots going UNDEFEATED and etching their names into the record books, McCarthy gets the nod. Expectations for the Patriots were high, but not so high that it was "Undefeated or bust for the Patriots!" And regardless of those supposed expectations, because frankly that is irrelevant, Belichick MUST get the award because of what he has done with the most dominant team of the 2000's.

Yes, I know they put their names in the record books, but as I said the award is for coaches who overachieved or who did more with less. Belichick did very well with a very good team. McCarthy also did very well with a mediocre team.
The NFL should not stray from what they have done in the past. They should stick to what they have been doing and go with a coach who got his team to a better place than they were expected to be. That is the sign of a truly good coach. I know Bill is a good coach, but he didn't overachieve as much as McCarthy. Sure he set records, but that isn't everything when it comes to Coach of the Year.
Also, BILL WAS CAUGHT CHEATING!! What kind of example is this? It's the same think with Shawn Merriman almost winning Defensive Player of the Year last year despite the steroid scandal. Instead the NFL wanted to set good examples for the kids so Taylor won. They are not setting a good example. They are setting an absolutely terrible example here. McCarthy was not caught cheating, therefore, he is more deserving and he is a better role model for kids everywhere
Choosing Bill was a bad example and just not the right choice.

Yes, you said the award is for coaches who overachieve or surpass expectations, and to me that seems like your own made up interpretation. I dont believe I've ever seen the actual definition of how to win COY, but I doubt that THAT is why. A coach wins the COY award because of his influence on his team and their overall success, and I can say that that makes more sense because: A) Coaches have major influence on his 53 man roster. B) Success shows how much of an influence he had.
Over the years, they didnt stray away from the *supposed* tradition because well, there wasnt anyone leading a team to such a dominant season such as, um, Belichick.
And, well I was expecting you to pull that one out of the hat. Yes, Belichick cheated, IN WEEK ONE. After Wk. 1, Belichick and his Patriots were clean as a whistle and ROMPED over everyone all the way to a HISTORIC 16-0 season. And for all of the reasons stated, THAT is why Belichick is the COY.

Report Offensive CommentEy Capernicus... Just for bringing up that ridiculous cheating charge you lost my vote. The level of "cheating" by Belichick rises to the level of you average holding call. Anyone who sees the taping incident as a genuine effort to cheat is pretty high on his moral horse and has no business judging anyone in sports. The taping was legal... it was where they were taping from that was the issue.
And going undefeated over 16 games is a wee bit more than ANYONE expected. First time in history efforts need to be recognized when they happen.

Report Offensive CommentI wouldn't give him coach of the year only because the Patroits' roster was expected to have the best record in the NFL and go all of the way.

50 AP voters
29 votes for Bill B.
15 votes for Mike M.
1/4 of 50 = 13
29 - 13 = 16
15 + 13 = 28
