Donnie Nelson, the Mavericks' president of basketball operations, has begun evaluating the team with coach Avery Johnson and owner Mark Cuban. But Nelson said quick solutions shouldn't be expected. Nelson made it clear that the organization still plans to build around Johnson and Nowitzki.

Okay I'm a die-hard Mavs fan and I know im not alone on this one. Why build a team around Dirk?? Dirk yea can put up good numbers but he is not a team leader not vocally not emotionally and he **** sure doesnt have the "swagger" of a team leader, I've used this comparison before Dirk is nothing but a poor man Bob Macadoo period end of story yes Mac was a good ball player but you could not place your franchise on this mans shoulders good numbers and all but not a leader, and at the end of the day after all the awards after all the accolades after all the Booz it's about winning the title, again i say this because the fact of the matter is this as long as Dirk is the leader of the team they will not win a championship and hey if that means you have to part ways with him then so be it Kevin Garnett would look really nice in a Mavs uni next season and it will open up the game for the entire Mavs roster because they have a low post player (all-around) in Kevin Garnett and he's a leader, now the Mavs shooters can get there shot off without worrying about filling their leaders roll when he's on the court thats something you do when somebody is hurt, trust me if Dirk played in Minn with their team he would not win as many games and they would probably be more team fights the Jordan vs Kerr of the 90s. To Be Continue.....

hey building around him could mean adding tougher players to life the load off him. dirk wasn't the only one that choked in the series

May 11, 2007  10:36 AM ET

kevin garnett and dirk are similar players aside from garnett being the better rebounder, both players don't go the hoop and settle for jumpers. garnett isn't known for being a leader or carrying the team by himself(meaning winning against better talent)

May 11, 2007  10:58 AM ET

I think they should try to add a shooting guard that can score to help dirk paul pierce is a nice fit for dirk because he is not choke in the playoffs try to unload stackhouse devin harris jason terry.try to sign a good point guard also like chauncy billups and grant hill so they will have a solid veteran fo the team maybe they will win the championship!!

May 11, 2007  10:58 AM ET

Paul Pierce Would Be a Very Nice Pick for the Mav's

May 11, 2007  11:00 AM ET

The Mavs need to make Josh Howard there number 1 option, Dirk is too soft mentally and physically, Josh brings it every night on both ends and is tougher minded, players will follow that lead rather than some soft as a tissue player that clearly lost his confidence, Dirk has been exposed, not just for this series but teams now know how to shut him down

Hooray ! Great for the Western conference that Dallas won't be
in the mix of the heated battle down the stretch, for at least another
season !

I guess some people have to break their hand not once, or even twice,
but maybe three times before they learn not to use their left, or off hand,
for the knockout punch.

May 11, 2007  11:10 AM ET

wonderful !! theres no need to worry about the mav's contending for a few years..

May 11, 2007  11:35 AM ET

antonio ...... I guarantee that the Mavs will be in the playoffs for at least the next few years .. I call that contending.
The Mavs need a vocal leader on the team. A guy that will get in his fellow players faces. A guy that is maybe even down right mean ... that will not take failure as an option no matter what other teams throw his way.
Even Jordan needed a Pippin. I think we have a player that is better than a Pippin but not as forceful as Jordan.
It should be interesting to see what the Mavs do in the off season.
Suggestion?? .. Luxery tax be damned get another superstar Cuban!!!!

May 11, 2007  12:23 PM ET

Send Dirk to man school. Changing players is not necessarily the issue.

May 11, 2007  12:42 PM ET

Didn't they say the same thing about Peyton Manning? That he's too soft to win the big one or that he can't beat the Pats and Tom Brady?
Where are those critics now?

When Dirk wins one, everyone will forget about this playoff collapse.

May 11, 2007  01:25 PM ET

people forget that only ONE TEAM wins the championship each year. everyone else is just 2nd. dirk GOT US to the finals last year and then had a lapse at the end. he dropped 50 vs the suns and tied the game at the end vs the spurs in game 7.

those thinking josh howard should be the main option do not watch basketball. do you think josh howard would be productive when teams GAMEPLAN to stop him with double and triple teams? josh plays 1 on 1, terry plays 1 on 1 because dirk commands double teams. He just wasn't effective this series, i expect him to come back better.

May 11, 2007  01:26 PM ET

Paul Pierce & Vince Carter both could be great keys for this team. I wondering what they are going to do-
Trade Dampier? But then who plays against Yao
JET? Harris isn't ready to play the Point
Howard is coming along, and Stack was hitting clutch shots keeping them in games

May 11, 2007  01:36 PM ET

Ok i just wanna bone Dirk so hard hiis **** hole is so fine

May 11, 2007  01:37 PM ET

Im the real sanjaya

May 11, 2007  02:00 PM ET

Dirk and company need to visit the Wizard to acquire some heart. This is some of the softest bunch of bozo's i've seen in years. I'm not sure who's softer, Dirk or Yao. Neither one will ever win a championship...

May 11, 2007  02:18 PM ET

All of you who think there is something wrong with the talent on this team are idiots. The only thing wrong is they need a dawg, they need a thug in there that will send a message to the opponent that they are going to kick thier buts.

Remember Dirk grew up in Germany not LA or Chigaco or NY. I wouldnt say he is soft he is just a different type of leader.

The Mavs have the talent to beat anyone on any given night. They just need a thug who will hurt people when they get past the first line of defeense and make the rest of the Mavs mean dogs.

They need to get Brendan Heywood from WA. This guy is an animal. The only reason he didnt start this past year was because Robinson has a personal beef w/ him. This dude is 7'0" and very athletic which the Mavs could use. He got in three fights this year and while I dont support violence there is nothing wrong with knocking a guy in his **** a few times when he drives to the lane.

If you watched the series how many time did you want someone to keep putting Davis on his but

May 11, 2007  02:46 PM ET

Sorry Paddyd, however a team can only be as hard as it's leader..

May 11, 2007  02:46 PM ET

They should have never let go of Jamison~ Jamison would have been the key to get past the Warriors. The GSW was the only team that the Mav's couldn't beat

Dirk is amazing and has the talent and the will to win a championship. He is not soft he just needs his supporting cast to step up they are the ones who choke not him, what do they expect him to do when he is double teamed? Force a shot??? Then everyone would be ripping on him like they rip on Kobe. He will be back next year better and more ready than ever. If they can get a force inside they will be set, they will win a championship if not several. GO DIRK!!!
