Paterno's Penn State salary revealed

Joe Paterno's salary as Penn State's coach is $512,664, which is relatively modest among his peers for a man of his accomplishments and tenure. But the figure, released yesterday by a state agency in Pennsylvania to comply with a court decision, does not include other football-related income. Paterno is expected to meet in the next few weeks with university officials to discuss a contract extension. "I'm paid well; I'm not overpaid," Paterno said yesterday, according to The Associated Press. "I got all the money I need."

So, the Joe-Pa batterers find out he's not paid an utter fortune, but choose to chuck in a sly dig about "other football-related income".

Seems a bit childish to me.

Paterno lives modestly and he has given a lot of money to the school, the Library is named after him. This is not a big deal.

November 30, 2007  09:22 AM ET

JoePa's the man.

November 30, 2007  09:23 AM ET

Agreed with all of the above....I heard somewhere that JoePa still lives in the same modest ranch house he bought 30 years ago? Cool. I have taken many shots at Joe this year for his on field stuff, but I think he represents the school and community well. He's not Nick Satan right?

He may be over the hill when it comes to coaching, but there's no question that Paterno is one of the classiest guys in football.

I'm rooting for him to end up with the all-time wins record over Bowden. Although it kinda seems like the one who gets it will be the coach that lives longest, because niether seems at all interested in retiring.

Got to agree with the classy comment: to Paterno, football is NOT a business.

November 30, 2007  10:04 AM ET

Why do I have visions of JoePa and the missus clippin' coupons from Pick N' Save every evening in the paper?

November 30, 2007  10:14 AM ET

Thats all? On that salary I'd have to budget...

I guess whining about officiating after every major loss and playing guys awaiting court dates on felony charges equates to being classy.

JoePa was/is always about his own legacy. He is a corporate bully and an elitist. You or me could coach for sixty years and win alot of games too.

The greatest college coach ever is and always will be Paul Bryant.

November 30, 2007  11:09 AM ET

Thats why they cant get the players, PSU cant even pay their coach....

November 30, 2007  11:17 AM ET

Paul who...?

November 30, 2007  11:39 AM ET

"Corporate bully"? Heh? This guy has ethics in a game today that is cynical with business interests. (How many college stadiums have beer company sponsored billboards? I know of some.) Paterno is so old school, he's still got ticket stubs from the Mayflower.

Bear Bryant was a legend in his own mind. Talk about an elitist. And there's this: "For years, Bryant defended charges of racism by saying the social climate didn't allow him to go after black players." Here's a man of great character, you bet.

November 30, 2007  01:32 PM ET

How in earth is JoePa a "corporate bullyy"?

November 30, 2007  01:32 PM ET

bully...forgive me TR

November 30, 2007  01:37 PM ET

Paul "Bear" Bryant was a great coach, but he had almost as much class as a pole dancer.

November 30, 2007  02:58 PM ET

fwiw, JoePa's salary is more than Saban's and Meyer's combined.

November 30, 2007  03:23 PM ET

Actually, you're wrong there CF Geek .... Saban makes a little less than 4 million per year

The TRUTH .... Saban took a pay cut to coach at Alabama .... why is that so hard to understand? And how can he help it if a school wants to pay him that much to coach? It's not like he asked for that much. I don't know what school you cheer for, but make sure you get your facts straight before you start attacking a coach that this story has nothing to do with.

Why is this story such a big deal? Joe Pa is old. Don't get me wrong, he still has the stuff that it takes on the field, but he probably does not care about the money at all .... I'm sure he just loves football.
