Red Sox to sign Wakefield's catcher

The Red Sox are close to consummating a one-year deal to bring back backup catcher Doug Mirabelli for the 2008 season. With the backup catching (and overall catching) markets slim pickings this offseason, the Sox bring back the catcher who has been with the team since the 2001 season (other than a brief stint with the Padres, when he was traded away and traded back). Mirabelli has served as Tim Wakefield's personal catcher for his tenure with the Red Sox, which has bolstered his value, especially given his declining offensive numbers.

Who caught Wakefield before 2001? I dont know anything about a knuckle ball but is it really that hard for Varitek to learn how to catch him? Can it be taught? I know I have seen Varitek try and boy it was not pretty at all. But thats what most catchers say. Eucker was the guy who said, When you try to catch it just wait till it hits the ground and stops moving.

varitek could probably learn, but he can't catch every game, so why bother - and yes, it has been a total disaster when he's tried. If only doug could learn to put his **** into his swing, he could start hitting over .124, then again, maybe not ;)

As long as the Sox's keep Wakefield they might as well keep Mirabelli. They tried another catcher and it didn't work out. I just hope his batting average goes up, I think he is around the .200 mark.

yeah, I didn't give him enough credit, he batted .202. The last catcher they tried decided it was easier to retire than try to catch wakefield.

who was it that said some thing to the effect that you try and knock it down and then chase after it"?
Those ain't the exact words but I think you catch my drift.

January 11, 2008  08:39 AM ET

"consummating" was the appropriate verb choice for this worthless story

January 11, 2008  09:07 AM ET

I hate my life...I only get to consumate twice a year...worse than being in prison

The Sox need a young catcher to groom asap.

January 11, 2008  09:12 AM ET

agreed hyper, they have no one.

I believe you are talking about Bob Eucker?

January 11, 2008  09:31 AM ET

This is the formula,
Take your biggest bopper in the minors and stick him behind homeplate. Add 1 year in the minors, two years in the majors behind a veteran catcher, stir, viola!

January 11, 2008  09:31 AM ET

yes, I am talking about Mr. Uecker. (spelling is optional)

"Wait until it stops rolling and pick it up." - on how to catch a knuckleball

I had to find the exact quote. doh!

Good quote.

if they let mirabelli bat with his shin guards on he would..he just goes up there takes his three hacks and sits down...no gloves, pine tar, or glory..gotta love it...because every now and then one of his three hacks sends one sailing over the monster

but no likely results in a 3-swing strikeout

January 11, 2008  12:29 PM ET

ok, 20 comments on a mirabelli thread is excessive.

January 11, 2008  12:48 PM ET

Wretched excess.

I think wakefield should deal with the catcher the red sox has ... All the red sox are are a much of babys and they cant deal with things.. Speaking as a True Yankee fan the pitchers dont have a problem with there catcher and they dont pick who is going catch for them .. I think the red sox players are a much of babys, And wakefield pitches like a little boy playing little league
