Inside Vijay's AT&T collapse

How can a Hall of Fame golfer the caliber of Vijay Singh blow a three-stroke lead with five holes to play, on a course where he has won in the past and which he knows like the back of his famous shotmaking hands? In the space of 80 minutes, Singh went from a sure runaway winner, to a sure choking loser, to a dramatic birdie putt at the 18th hole that set up a two-man playoff, to losing on the first extra hole to Steve Lowery. For one three-hole stretch, Singh seemed to forget that he was supposed to be 294 spots better than Lowery. As he stood over his approach shot in the middle of the 14th fairway, Singh was on cruise control. He held a three-shot lead over the field. But one little piece of rotten luck sent his game sideways - along with his golf ball. Singh's shot landed on the green but spun off to the left and into a deep gully. Ugh. An overhanging tree branch prevented any sort of popup shot. Singh chose to punch the ball into the side of the hill and ran it across the green, 18 feet past the cup. He two-putted for a bogey that must have discombobulated him. "Then I hit a poor chip on No. 15," Singh said. Right. Which led to another bogey. "Then I hit a bad tee shot on No. 16." That one ended up in a fairway bunker. From there, Singh sailed the ball over the green into yet another bunker far below the putting surface. It led to yet another bogey.

You could see the tears begin to well-up in his eyes. Very emotional and distraught, but he held it together and took it like a man.

This is what sucks about being Tiger or ViJay. When you win its expected and when you loose its a big deal of how your in a slump or had a massive collapse..... What about the hundreds of other guys that were playing that didnt do as well? Why not write about their collapses? Geez its a game... he didnt win, congratulate him for his stellar play up to the end. He played well and thats better than most everyone else.

This is really a non-column. Wondering why a golfer can lose (pro or not) is like asking why a person can score a par on one hole and make an eight on the next.
