Hoch's caddie battling cancer

Scott Hoch has braced himself for a few more job feelers this week. It's the nature of tour life whenever someone who is playing well has a caddie opening. Like any job, the chance at a nice paycheck is worth exploring. ''Believe me, if they didn't think I could still play, I wouldn't get them,'' Hoch said after winning Sunday's Allianz Championship. What Hoch really wants, though, is to hear Greg Rita's voice at the other end of the line with a solicitation perhaps no more complicated than two words: ``I'm ready.'' Rita worked Hoch's bag until last September, when he suddenly slumped over minutes before their pro-am tee time at the Champions Tour stop near Raleigh, N.C. Tests revealed a malignant brain tumor, putting Rita on that dreaded course of radiation and chemotherapy treatments. ''He's fighting it, fighting it hard,'' said Hoch, who got a little teary-eyed as he dedicated Sunday's victory to Rita, who is still recovering at his Jacksonville home.

Report Offensive CommentPlus, you have to like Hoch. I don't care who you are. He is one of the VERY few tour players who has ball of his own. Most of them are candy ****. Not him, He isn't afraid of anyone.
