Knicks interested in D'Antoni

Posted: Tuesday April 29, 2008 05:45AM ET

Despite his reputation as a mediocre defensive coach, Mike D'Antoni is on Donnie Walsh's radar for the Knick opening if D'Antoni is fired by the Suns after the first round, according to a source close to the Knick president. Meanwhile, veteran coach Paul Silas told The Post last night he plans on contacting Walsh in the next few days with interest in interviewing for the Knick job. Silas was a Knick assistant for 10 seasons, but hasn't been a head coach since being fired by Cleveland in 2005.

It's Not!

D'Antoni will end up in Toronto. He would rather work for Colangelo, someone he knows and trusts, rather than go to the Zoo that is New York. Toronto would fit his up-tempo style more than the slow-as-snail lineup in New York anyway.

Look for either Mark Jackson or Sam Mitchell on the Knicks bench next season.

If D'Antoni is fired by Phoenix he is going straight to the Raptors. They already have all the pieces in place that the Knicks do not have.

He will have no trouble finding another coaching job. Many teams are looking for a new coach.

Winning an NBA Championship takes a good coach, good players, a good organization and some luck thrown in. Getting Kerr was one of the best things the Suns could have done. He's a Champion and anybody who questions that needs to show up with their Championship rings and compare them! Otherwise it's all talk and BS. Kerr will monitor (and mentor) D'Antoni and if he doesn't respond, he'll replace him...at the right time.

Luke Longley has a handful of championship rings, too. You want him coaching YOUR team?

The Knicks need more than window dressing...they need an accomplished, seasoned, veteran coach.

Give me a break: Luke Longley compared to Steve Kerr? Longley has three rings and has done NOTHING since. Kerr has five from TWO different teams. He is basketball smart too. So NO I don't want Longley on my team, but if the Suns dont want Kerr, we'll take him back at Spurs Central. He's a winner, not a loser like the Knicks!

Calling the Knicks "a loser"?

Wow...such insight. Great point, ToM!

Report Offensive Comment

Calling D'Antoni a mediocre defensive coach is like calling Picasso a mediocre telephone repairman. Since the Suns don't actually play defense, the characterization of D'Antoni's "defensive coaching skills" is moot.

Report Offensive Comment

Oh great...he can't coach a talented team to a championship but he's gonna try with the NY Knicks. What a joke?

Thanks Yankee64.

About the Knicks: I can't believe the power in the NBA the Knicks have. I guess it's because they're in New York City. Any other team that has a President and/or Coach go thru a very public sex trial and be found guilty in any manner like Isiah and they would have been fined...suspended...kicked out of the league! Let a player do that and they wouldn't be getting paid to bounce a basketball anymore. They would want to set an example.

So whoever becomes Knicks coach goes to a bad environment because it will take years to win...or goes to a great environment because they can get by with anything and still get paid to do it. i don't think D'Antoni will fit in.

In the older thread I stated that D'antoni should not be fired from Phoenix. He coached them 100x better through a risky trade than Avery Johnson did with Dallas. Comparably, he did a better job.

However, should he be fired, the man will bolt straight for Toronto. Better management, less national scrutiny and a team that would probably benefit from the type of offense he runs.

New York is a mess. It's the equivalent of IU basketball right now. And i don't think D'antoni has the same cohones that Tom Crean does. It would not work.

Mike is going to end-up coaching the Toronto Raptors. The raps already play that up-tempo style. I am just hoping they can learn to play some D for the love of god.
