Marlins to make Ramirez very rich
Posted: Saturday May 10, 2008 08:07AM ET
Lambasted for their major league-low $21 million payroll and perpetual trading of star players, the Marlins are finally keeping one in the fold. Shortstop Hanley Ramirez told an acquaintance he has agreed to the framework of a six-year, $70 million extension. That ranks as the richest contract in franchise history, topping the six-year, $61 million deal Gary Sheffield received in April 1997. Ramirez's contract is pending a physical and an official announcement might not come until early next week.

Report Offensive CommentMarlins still have those great prospects the Tigers gave them, too, to build on. Cameron Maybin will be the next superstar for the fish.

Report Offensive CommentI'm not a Marlins fan, but perhaps people should quit dogging them so much. Look at their record; now, look at the record of the Detroit Tigers, where the Marlins traded their supposed two best players.

Heres a secret you may not have realized... you dont have any more players to trade for young talent. When it hits that you don't have anyone else to trade and you can't afford big time players...the Marlins will become the Pittsburgh Pirates of Miami. Nice stadium, and 45 friends and family in the stands.

I don't know about that. They've restocked through the trades. In a few years they'll have more prove players to trade away.
It wouldn't be a bad business plan for a small market team.
My frustration with the Marlins is they aren't a small market. They have a huge market. WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO TAP THAT MARKET MARLINS? Do you realize you're in a great position to dominate the Central and South American markets?
